She is Acquitted on the Charge of Cut- ting Dice. ‘The case of Nora Ross was brought up in the police court this afternoon. The charge of cutting Charles Dice was dismissed, as Dice could not prove that the woman had cut him. He could not tell whether a woman or aman had cut him; he claimed that he ‘was too drunk to know' whether he was cut ornot. The woman was then arraigned on the charge of disturbing the peace. Attorney Alex Green defended her. He and Assistant City Attorney Strawn had a little contro- versy, in which Mr. Strawn felt aggrieved to the extent that he declared his intention of resigning his position. J. M. Tanner, a reporter, testified to the fact that Nora Ross had told him in an in- terview that she had not cut Dice. Leonard Weynand told the story of the trouble. How he had accompanied Dice and Nora Ross to the Casino, and thence to Doty & Darst's saloon. His story was substan- tially the same as published in the pupers when the fracas occurred, The jury returned a verdict to the -effect that both parties were guilty of the charge of disturbing the peace. The court fined the Ross woman §0 and costs, and Dice $35 and costs. “‘Aunty Gould” paid Nora's fine, and Dice went back to the “‘tank,” being unable to produce the money. When ‘“‘Aunty Gould” had settled with his honor, she brought forth a silver dollar aud_shoved it across the desk at him, saying: hat's for you.” The judge looked up in amazement, hen realizing the situation, he picked up the dollar and hurled it after her. Nora pru- dently gathered in the money and handed it to “Aunty” who grinned, His honor ex- cused “Aunty” on uccount of her ignorance. e . A well informed lawyer directed a Bee re- porter’s attention to the tricks of police court lawyers, 1n cases of appeal, 10 the following manver: “It is about time that someone should say something about the prosecution of our law offenders in Omaha. The law is all right, but the practice is wrong. Whena person commits a crime or misdemeanor and is fined more than #10 he will appeal if lie can furnish bonds, and that is usually the end of the case. Now, 1n order to evade the punishment, it is only s question whether he can furnish bond ornot. If hecan, he escapes it; if not, he has to pay his fiuo or remain in the county jail and wonder why his neighbor escapes the punishment by reason of being more fortunate 1 furnish the boud to appeal when the neigh- bor is equally guilty.
