Runyan bund a handsome %1000 residence on Park avenue for his own occu- pancy. N. W. Williams has the con- tract for the mason work and Lars Christianson the wood work. There are a number of awnings on the north side of Broadw between Sixth street and the Pacific house, that should be torn down by the marshal. They are so low that pedestrians can not walk under them without stooping. The Council Bluffs del: tion to the deep water convention at Denver, Cola., reéached there safely and found the sub- jeet had excited more interest in some of the other states thau in lowa. The Texas delegation pecially Ia . The conventior ‘day was composed of se nl huund delegates. Tt was expected that the August term of the district court would convene y terday morning, but Judge Loofbou was at Red Oak. attending the judic convention, and the opening of the te was postponed until thismorning. The grand jury will also meet at the same time to begin 1ts arduous labors. In about ten daysthe classes in the Y. M. C. A. gymnasit will be reorgan- ized. All members who d i the afternoon or evening cls report soon at the rooms. Boys will be provided for as soon as there are appli- cations enough to warrant the organ- ization of a special class for them, Par- ents are invited to call at the rooms and make inguiric Oscar Brew, Jack Haynes we larceny is preparing to sire to join should M. George Roduey, charged with the attempted larceny of a team from the Rink stable, paid costs and was discharged. Willinm Slivers was ¢ od with disturbing the peace. e pleaded not guilty, and his ¢ was continued., A foreigner by the name of TLutz Genesky applied at police headquarters yesterday for medical treatment. He has been working at Ord, Neb., and was taken sick about a month ago. His slster, living at Detroit, wrote him to come to her and she would take o him. He reached this city able to continue his journey. After resting at the station during the day he left in the evening for Detroit. For some reason unknown to the gen- eral public very little or no sprinkling is being done in Bayliss park, and asa result the grass is dying out, and this beautiful resort is becoming brown and bare. Last season water was freely used, several spray nozzles being kept playing nearly every day. With the weter us it eXists in the park there seems to be no good reason for al- lowing the grass to die for wuant of moisture. Elsewhere in this issue will be found s requesting proposals for bids to furnish the institution for the education of the deaf and dumb, with meat, milk and coal. The state always deals liber- ally with persons who enter into con- tracts with it to furnish supplies, and this mstitution, under Superintendent 510 exception to the rule esponsible dealers in these ar cles in the eity will find it to their ad- vantage to submit proposals at an early day. Work was begun yesterday morning paving Glen avenue. This beautiful thoroughfare will be paved its entire length and will become one of the most {::puhr ves in the city. The pavers gan work at the upper end, near the water works reservoir. As soon as this jobis completed work will be com- mencod on Eighth street, after which all of the streets in that part of the fourth ward between Main and Eighth streets and Broadway and Ninth av- enues will be paved. There was quite an exciting time on Harrison street yesterday afternoon. An infuriated German swore by all the povers of carth and ‘sky that unless the legraph company removed their poles from in front of his property he would *‘taoK a axes und schop dem down my- self, py gracious.” Many of these poles stand in the sidewalk and in other places they are objectionable to the roperty owner since the curhing grade ines were run. They ought to be re- moved. Contractor Kelley began work yoster- day grading the grounds at the Hill school. The grounds are to be arranged in a sevies of terraces, five in number, from the building down to Hill School avenue, twenty-two feet below, The work will require about a month to com- letd. It is impossible to get to the ifterent points with wagons, so chutes are avranged, upon which the dirt is thrown by the shovelers and slid down toa number of traps, under which the wagons are driven to be loaded. The improvements will costabout $1,000. Contractors who are doing the city’s work should be careful that the prop- erty of private individuals is in no way defuced or injured. When the paving was being nfmm on Harrison street the workmen took out large quantities of'soil from the parking hetween the sidewalk and the curb. Other similar instances are cited where there has been a reckless disregard of the rights of property owne A careful regard of the rights of citizens in these matters will save u great deal of ill-feeling and complaint as well as possible litigation, It is so seldom that republicans load up their stomachs with anti-prohibition that instances of their appearance be- fore the police judge are exceedingly rare, Yesterday it so happened that a member of the republican colored club slalded to the evil influences of his ocratic acquaintances and the re- sult was that he had to contribute #8.10 to the city treasury to get out of the ‘'quay.” The Globe nearly goes wild over the affair, but it is not really to be blamed, as the case is something won- derful, and it is the only genuine sensa- tion that the evening organ has con- tained for some time. - E. They visited the Merviam block, the Ogden hobse, Kiel’s hotel, the Creston house, and other places ahout the city. T examined into the financial con- dition of the city, property values, ete., and expressed themselves as well pleased with its present condition and uture prospects. This fuith they have given abundant evidence of since that time in the amounts of moncy they have loaned to various persons, through their local agents. Throughout the west there is a great demand for money in the shape of loans. Eastern houses are besieged from every quarter so that there is abundant opportunity to “*place” every dollar of available and unemployed money. The work is not to find places to invest, but from the large number of applicants to_choose those which are the safest and will give them the best returns.
