July 81, The routine work of the ofice of commis- sioner of pul lands and buildings is not without interest. Since the establishment of the oftice in 1577, 2,000 deeds of school bonds have been made, about one-third of which were issued on lots and the balance for bodies of land ranging from 40 to €4) acres each, and thus passed from the ownership of the state to individual ownership, ageregat- Ing at loast 160,000 acres. Regent Mallalicu, of Kear: coln to-day at the instance trade of that city. The veterans of the will be in camp there during the mouth of September and Mr. Mallalien was here to offer the state militia inducements to join them, and remain in camp with them during that month. The proposition was loft that Kearney would furnish the militia boys ground for camp, water and a line of neces- sary supplies free, and such courtesies as would make their stay pleasant. Mr. Mal lalicu, who left for home on the west bound passenger this afternoon, did not gt posi- tive assurance that the “amateur ‘boys’ would attend, but he received eneo ude him hopeful and ho w with @ final proposil 1 with the citizens d t s und ition of tegacy ] in Lin the boar stood that the malitda boys ex:; on a few additioual points to those proposed by Mr. Mallaleiu, and their going Wwholly hinges on whether they get them or not. AN NSIVE PET. Milton Shipman, by his attorneys, to-day filed his petition in the district court of Lan- caster county, alleging that Manger Bros. on and before the 4th of March kepl an un- 1 wolf tied in front of their place of son P street between Ninth and Fouth, knowloa 428 o qud wolt was wild, evvious and untamed. The state board of equalization continues its work from day to day. Otoe county, by a careful showing, yvesterday obtained a sub- stantial reductic 15t how much, however, is not stated. The board, in the matter of tax reductions, has evidenced a fair sp and it is reasonable to suppose that the able valuation submitted by some counties will be carefully looked into. It is certain that some counties have decreased their valuation, when their location and_develop- ment should have warranted and obtained a marked raise. The compared assessed valuation of the state by counties will be completed to-day, and then the suthentic valuation of the state can be known upon the assessed basis. This work has taken a much longer time than usual. Many counties have been fair in the matter of taxation. The valuation of property has been high with a correspondingly low rate. RE BONDS. The contract work on the Christian uni- versity is now well under way. It will be pushed as rapidly as possible until cold weather and will be flnished early in the next month of May. The churches and denominational universities of Lincoln will 8001 rival those of any state in the union. The residence building in the city has been substantial the ast ear than ever before in her history. hile perhaps more dwellings have been erccted during some of the past years, they have not been so finely finished, or even so substantial. The growth in this way this year would certainly be a credit to any excly of even greater preteutions than Lin- coln. There is plenty of material on the strects now to push the grading for all there is in 1t ‘The contractors say that they do not fear any more stoppages now., The supply of cedar blocks and sand preciudes any such possibil- ity. Thisis certainly good news, and the business men of thé city can reasonably ex- pect that closed streets will now be a thing of the past. e e il Like the Light Weights Of the profession pugilistic, the kidueys are small but active in a state of health., Their secresion contains impurities productive of rheumatism, gout and dropsy, if allowed to remain.
