T R Tyt oo e THE OMAHA DAILY BEE: SUNDAY, JULY 8 1888.'-TWL§7 g S —— THE SPECULATIVE MARKETS. ‘Wheat Continues Strong and Closes at Top Prices. SHORTS DO THE BUYING IN CORN. A Stight Flarey in Oats—Provisions Open Strong But Close Weak— Cattle and Hogs Active ~Quotations. CHICAGO PRODUC Chiteaco, July 7.—[Special Telegram to Tag Bre, | —Traders who sold wheat down a cont, yosterday afternoon under the beliof that thoy bad been *worked” by foreigners into making a market for supposed manipu 1ators o sell on, kept on solling this morning and broke prices nearly anothor cent. August sold off from S$1%e to 803 and Decombor from S4c to 88'5c. The selling business was overdone and the market turned up. Hutch fnson was also a conspicuous buyer and the opinion prevails that he has covored enormous short line of wheat and is taking another tack. Tt is also stated, with some show of authority, that Cudahy is fighting the advance with oven move eneray than ho fought the dectine up to within a short timo ago. This reversal in the position of these two great operators allustrates the variableness of speculative opintons and the perversity of what goes by the name of “luck.” The market acted sharply mn ro- sponse to the buying that set in when the do- clinc was checked, and an_advance of 1 followed. August climbed to 821¢c_and_Do cembor to S4%,c. The prico dropped back Jg@dc soveral times thoreafter, but the undertone to the market was strong and in- variably lost und was quickly re- cov The close was firm at practically ton prices. One feature offthe day’s trading was 'tho demand for July. The urgency of the inquiry carried July to a premium of e over Augist and considerable business was done on a basis of S@lc difference. Bid- ders found it diffieult to find wheat, and hold- ers of coucentrated blocks of cash wheat were mot tempted to loosen their grip. Carriers who were threatening ten days a0 to deliver 8,000,000 ot 4,000,000 bushels of wheat becatse August did not commund the natural premium over July, are scomingly not on earth. The dispropor- tionate advance in July docs not bring the stufl out, and holders are making no sign. Tho voliine of business transncted was not excessive, 'The scarecity of offerings w notable feature, The niarket bulled easily and the bears are once more seemingly in e minority in numbers and on the decline in point of influcnce, tempo 3 Domestic crop news was unfavorable as a rule. Receipts at southern markets are small, proving the lateness of the scason. Corn' was strong, not so much, perhaps, because of mvestment or speculative inquiry as for the reason that offerings w ingly limited. 1t was generally ¢ @ “short market.” The shorts did mo: the buying and tho price was held with more or less firmness at an improvement averag ing anout 1o ovor yesterday. Tuore was quite a little flurry in_the oats market caused by the anxioty of outstand shorts in July to fill their contracts. leading longs wore independent in’ their views and the price at oue time worked up to 8314c, an advance of 15 from the opening. Provisions were favorod with a strong openizg. Initial salos all around w at udvanced prices, and for a time trade sented o bullish appearance, As the duy proceeded, however, speculative offerings were exexpectedly increased. In pork and short ribs particularly the desire shown to sell becamo quite general, and undor tho break in these articlos the entire warket ruled weaker. Lard showed the strongest front on the receding turn, yet at the close it was only 225 higher than yesterday. Both pork and stort ribs suffered an actual de. elino of buTige. General tading was only Tioterate Hua1argely ot asoalhing Loh tor. Sales of cash property made rather a poor showing. August ' and September again monopolized speculative attention, 3 STOCK, CHICAGO 1 et Crmicaco, July 7.—|Speefal Telogram to Tue Bee.|—Cart Mhe estimated receipts were 2,000; for the wecek, 35,841, Business was rather more active than on the average Saturday, and a fow loads of good catt were eagerly bousht up at an udvance of 10 @15c over current rates Friday, making an advance cqual to 60 cents since Monday last on best natives and about 40 conts on pluin and common.
