A Hitch in the Settlement of 0. E. Mayne's Affairs. A few days ago it was announced in the city press that arrangoments had beon made by which it was thought C. B. Mayne would be enabled to extricate himself from the finan- clal dfculties in which he had become in- volved. This announcement was based upon a document whicn had been placed on record by E. H. Corbett. This was an admission on the part of Mayne of his indebtednoss, fn the following sums to the hames given: Goorge E. Barker, $20,000; C. H. Sloman, £5,800; E. H. Corbott, £,500, ana F. B. Johnson, §2,000. Corbett, it seems, purchased these claims at their face value and was empowered to util- izo the collateral and with the proceeds of the same, within sixty days, to pay Mayne's indebtedness to the individuals in question, Corbett also agreed to pay $5,000 to G. E. Barker to be applied on a loan of §35,000, which _was secured by a mortgage on the Platte Valley ranch in this county, said to contain about 1,100 acres and compris. ing a large amount of stock and improve- ments, ) apresenting about £200,000. Another clause in the agreement was that. Mayne was 0 pay in full and get released from record, a chattel mortgage given to Congrossman Dorsey. The amount of this mortgage, it is claimed was about 831,000, though it is now understood that Mayne claims he received only §10,000 from Dorsey, and $5,000 ot that amount he has alread, d. This doecument was signed by Mayne and Corbott, and at one place speaks of Corbett asa receiver for the former. It was dated * May 1, though it was not filed until last Tues- This was considered somewhat strange, and lod a BEg reporter to make inquiry as to - why the instrument was not filed at the time of its adoption. Corbett said that it was not his intent to file the document at all until last Monday cvening, when Mayne came into town, dis- playing a bill of sale of his stock at the ranch. But Corbett did not know in whose favor the bill was made. The bill in question startled the latter, and accordingly the doc- ment above summarized was placed on rec- ord. Under it, Corbott suid that he felt em- powered to sell all the security and collateral guarantecing Mayne's indebtedness, es- pecially as the sale was satisfactory all the interested parties, who thought that that would bo the best means of getting the money which Mayne scemed disposed to pay them. This salo was to be conducted under the management of Mayne's attorney, who was satisfactory to all” the creditors. The sale was announced for the first of the present races, 1t had been vely advertised as had also the sale of Mayne's ranch by means of special circu- lars, giving name, description, sire, and dam of about 125 stallions, brood mares'and foals of 158386, These animals had been brought out to the fair grounds and there was pres- ent a large number of horse fanciers who were disposed to pay reasonable prices for stock. Thesaledid not commence till Weédnes- day afternoon, however. It had proceeded but a short time, threo horses having been sold, when Mr. Mayne, and wife, with Captain Ashby and wife drove into the grounds and up to the auction stand and per- cmptorily forbade o longer comtinu- ance of the sale. Maynoe stood in his carriage, and calling around him all who were interested in the purchases, told them that nov another hoof would be sold, and di- rected the superintendent of his ranch, aman named Linn, to take the animals back to the farm; there was plenty of grass for them to cat and to lot them feed on if. This action on the part of Mayne' ivas a surprise to everybody, especially when it was thought he was’ satistled with the ar- nent. It disappointed the horsemen ad come to make purchases and con- founded the ereditors, some of whom looked for a speedy settlement of their claims, Mr, Mayne was yesterday sought ‘for at Insu)(\ ¢, but had ‘not returned from s ranch. His attorney, Mr. Cavanaugh, was also sought, but he 100 was not in his office, In the absence of both these people, the xplanation which was offered for ne's conduct is that he does not consider sof the sale of his stock stock is hield as security by The other creditors, it is said, are secured in_other ways by notes, really, land contracts and the like, sdadial L Wm.
