MANAGER. ELEPHONE! E1RREs OFFICE, No. 43, 1ot ED1TOR, No, 2. MINOR MENTION, N. Y. Plumbing Co. New spring goods at Reiter's, Additional Council Bluffs on Seventh page. A bwilding permit for a $1.200 residence was issued yesterday to W. J. Scown. A marriage license was issued yesterday 10 Edward Havlick and AnnaCikora, both of Omaha, 1t is stated upon the best possible authority that work upon the Merriam block will be threestories instead of two, as was first pro posed. Mr. Harry Sims and Miss Rika Wascher were united in marriage Wednesday cvening by Rev. G. W. Crofts, of the Congre ional church, Squire Biggs yesterday tied the matri monial knot for Edward Havelick and Anna Cikora, of Omaha, in his usual impressive manner, The work of excavating for Alderman Lacy's new block on South Main street was begun yesterday afternoon. The contract is h(-{d by J. P. Weave, Public exercises will be held in the first and fourth rooms of the Mill school this afternoon, beginni 2o'clock, The pupils of the entire building will participate. The first game to be played by the Council Bluffs club under the new management will be played at the Manawa Athletic park next Sunday afternoon with the C. E. Mayues, of Omaha, The firm of Benson & Shepherd has suc- ceeded that of Benson & Mayne. A. L. Shepherd, who has so long managed the Council Bluffs office of the firm is now Mr. Benson's partner, succeeding Mr. Mayne. The funeral of Jumes, the sixteen-months- old son of Mos and Elizabeth Whelan, took place ye lay afternoon from their residence at Weston, The cause of death ‘was congestion of the lungs. W. W, Chapman has received and is at work filling an orde r from the Union Pacif railroad for 100 “Bu tt panels” framed. The picture is u nov city as a_schome for ad- vertising the pleasure ~ resorts reached by that road. Tn the district court yesterday the divorce case of Sackett vs, Sackett went by default, The case of Saxey vs. Passmore occupied the attention of the court during the r mainder of the day. It involves the owner- ship of fifteen acres of land, W. Aylesworth, who shot the Nebraska teacher, Hill, and who in turn lost both his eyes, was oul on the streets yesterday in a buggy. Hois looking thin and pale, but is rallying rapialy, and aside from his'loss of sight will soon be in fair condition, The eight delegates to the state convention of the A. O, H. ut Cedar Rapids returned yesterday morning and report an_enjoyable time. The next convention in 1389 is located at_Sioux City, that place receiving 52 yotes to Keokuk’s 51. Postmaster Bowman returncd yesterday morning from his visit to Freeport, 11L., and reports that every race for the July trotting meeting in this city has been filled. he en- tries are strictly first class, and include some of the best horses in the country. The entries Jor this city are more numerous than for any *other place in the Iowu circuit. During the week of the races unusual at- tractions in evening amusements will be af- forded visitors from abroad and our home people as well. At Dohaney’s opera house the Felix A. Vincent company will hold the boards for the week commencing July 2. The company will appear in a repertoire of stan- dard and popular plays. A reduced scale of prices will be presented. The M. E. church property on Upper Broadway will be offered for sale in a few days. 1f it can be disposed of at a fair valu- ation it will be sold and the new structure erected on some other site in that portion of the city. If it can not be sold at a reasonable figure the present structure will be replaced by a more imposing one at an early date, as thesociety is determined to have more com- modious quarters. Since it has been definitely settled that the saloons must go, they are going at a surpris- ingly lively rate, and the appearances are that the police will have very few back doors to look after next Sunday. Harry Inman, of the Phoenix, is preparing 1o move o Omaha. ‘The saloons in the Mint, Turf and Palace are 10 more, and Chief Lucas reports ail but one closed on Main street. Mayor Rohrer's fines are due, but the clerk has not been called upon to issue a receipt, and it is doubtful ‘whether a single dollar of saloon fines will be paid this month, The case of James Williams, for beating his daughter who was matrimonially inclined at an early age, as stated in yesterday's Bex, was called before Judga Aylesworth yester- day morning. The prosecuting witness, who was Williams' would be son-in-law, fafled to appear against him, and the defendaat was discharged. It is probable that the young couple are already enjoying n life of double- blessedness, as they went to Omaha Wednes day in search of some one to splice them The costs in the cu were taxed to th youthful Benedict for his non-appearance, and Williams went his way Table. Council Bluffs Gets the Firemen's Tourney Next Year, HOT TALK ABOUT THE MOTOR. More “Milwaukee” Mulishness—The City Schools Close—Our Pacific Vis- ftors—Paving Proceeds—Court Sayings—Great Base Ball Hot Talk About the Motor. “Tho worst lick we ever got,” was the forcible judgment expressed by one of the citizens as he learned that the motor line had stopped running trains. ‘“It's about time that the citizens took some action to show the Milwaukee & St. Paul folks that they won't submit to having a stop put to so im- portant an enterprize. I'll be one of a hun- dred to go down there and put the crossings in anyway." This is but a sample of the talk. There is much of it that is alike in the spirit of ndig- nation, but varying in expression. Itis the talk of the street and the store. It seems inexplicable that a great railway corporation like the Milwaukee & St. Panl should refuse to let the motor line cross its track. Al the other railways have agreed to allow the crossings to be put in, but this one standing out prevents the motor line from running up One of the eity officials indigna Wright has put you to 8! meserist, ¢ is, and when he w: hand and says come, it's time to get into your beds, you fellows just close your and he tucks you in. Even our littie mayor, who is gencrally o wide-awake, is put to sleep too, and with Alderman Pat Lacy they head the fire lads proc the St. Paul, going out of their preference and putronnge to that road. ract.”” ked anothier, ‘af when up again_you won't the g iohllllll!l('l‘ con and let that slip be put to sleep again, thre “No. ir, replied the now aroused city father, “'we'll show you whether Wright or any other man can put us to sleep or not. You just wait a bit. ir, we won't be caught napping and let the gas company, nor the lml\\n_)n either take advantage of the city.” ut you must own up, that this once, you have been put to sleep. Why don’t you wake up and get & move now. If you men say that the motor line must cross that track it will come pretty near cros g it.”? George 1. Wright, with his usnal affability and smoothness of speech, was yesterday in- formally but carn y giving his view of the matter. It was in substance that Mr. Reed, of the motor line, would not agree to any fair contract with the railway company, but was unreasonable in his demands, and fickle- minded, *Mr. Reed, on the other hand, is clear and firm in his declaration that_he is willing to sign ch_an agreement with the Mil- waukee & St. Puul as has been entered into with theother railways. He does not seo why the St. Paul should expect or ask for anything different, and sees no reason why that company should not allow the motor line to put in a crossing just as the other rouds, similarly situated, An even dozen of sewer rats were turned out of the city trap yesterday morning for the inspection of Judge Aylesworth, as that gentleman tighted a fresh havana and crossed his legs on the police court bench with the usual *“Trot 'em out, Charley.” Charley trotted them out in short order, and pu them through a variety of paces as he reined them up to the stand to receive the orders of the starting judge. Eight of the twelve entries were heavily handicapped by a charge of disturbing the peace, and two of them, Jack O'Neil and John Lafferty, were ordered to carry $0.60 Weights. The other two, Dick Hanley and Dan Dunn, were started even with the v: in the slow ra They showed their sps in coming down the stretch, and were d charged. The vags were easily cistan and were sent back to the stables for addi- tional training. Their names on the entry list appeared as Calvin Simmons, Thomas Kinkaid, Charles Treynor, Moses McClure, William Dorin, James Kelley, Williamn Mor- ris and William McVicker. —_—— Climbing “The Hill" of Learning.
