Some of the parties who had previously subscribed, doubled their subscriptions, and the ultimate erection of the structure was assured. At the time of receiving the dispatch $24,000 had been raised, one fourth of the sum having been subscribed in the past four days. In advertising their offer of a bonus, the board of trade asked for a £150,000 hotel, but after talking over the matter the Chicago capitalists decided that the sum named \\nnl:l not build and furnish a hotel such as v wanted, and_decided upon $230,000 as price of the structure complete, Their offer now is to invest a quarter of a million dollars here if the city gives them $30,000. Aldermen Metealf and Lacy visited lower Broadway yesterday to inspeet the paving and see what cause there was for the com- plaints that have been made about the gravel being so course as to be unfit for use. The gravel is furaished by Keller & Parsons, und is obtained from the Hinton banks. 'I‘lw J engineer claims that son it will not drop betw ders not to use it. Mr. Keller \\unl\ll the ity to take what had already been loaded on the cars and agreed thai there should be no further cause for complaint, It is thought all difiiculty may be avoided by using smaller sereens at the gravel bed and the city anthorities so recommended. e aty Board, The atten 1 of the county commissioners vesterday occupied in auditing bills, ¢ were so many of them that they could not complete it in_ one d citizens waited upon them and asked them to appropriate $1,000 for the purpose of rep: ing the bridge and road between this city iawa, Commissioners Under- wood and Waite were appointed a committee, with power w act, to take such steps as necessary and expend £1,000 or any part thereof to put the road iu proper condition for driving. —————— Successful Burglars. The discovery was made yesterday morn- ing that during the previous night burglars had been busying themselveson Pearl street, They had entered the storage and commis- sion house of J. R.Snyder, No.14 Pearl street, and had broken open the cash drawer in the oftice and also opened the safe. The doors of the safe were simply closed, the combination not being set, so they were not put to the trouble of blowmng the safe, and Mr. Snyder will not have to bear the ex- pense of patching it up. The iron box inside was forced open after the fellows had whit- tled away at the wooden partitions. The fellows only took money, sccuring about §30 in all, and carefully avoided a pawr of gold bracelets which were in the safe, and a check which was in the cash drawer. They appar- ently did not want anything that could casily identified. On the other side of the building is D, E. Gleason’s coal office. To this they gained en. trance by cutting a hole in the door large enough to admit a haud, and_thus reaching the spring lock they opened it. They cut the top of the desk and forced open the cash drawer, taking therefrom about §5. They left one silver quarter in the drawer, which either overlooked or left to comfort the loser. The fellows made their exit by way of the larger door in the rear, which was found open just as they had evidently left it. This tened by a padlock, & peculiar can be unlocked by’ giving it a ) quick jerk. As they evidently un- fastened the door in this way, without the y or breaking any of the fast. 218 that the work must have donle by someone who had familiarized self with the details of the plac oughly, It is not clear how they gained an [ nee, one theory being that they slipped into the building before it was closed for the ght, and hid themsclves there. Another theory is that ‘someone crawled through a broken window. The presence of undis. turbed cobwebs ahout this window yesterday worning is rather against the idea of someone having crawled through it itly no trace left by which ollow up the thieves. The police are supposed to be watch- business portion of the city, in addi tion to the vegular city force. The fre- s does not add greatly to g The city oftl cers have been put to & great disadvantage of late by being compelled to put on metro politan airs in the manner of uniforms. They are 80 bedecked with bright buttons and by other paraphernalia that they are seen for a lonis dlstance, and can be easily watched by thicves. They in turm cannot “shadow” a suspicious character. As the city has no special detectives or oftleers in citizens' dress it seems that the advantige at night.is all on the side of the gang.. The Jones case has 1 looked upon for some time as a court chestnut, but when his attorney, Colonel C. R. Scott, of Omaha, yesterday outlined the case as it peared to him, it scemed of striking interest, trongly to. both Justico and facts of the shoot- re familiar to most. (it Tonesvaz | ieaas ot eholl il surely so now. He strikes everyone a poor demented creature, who has no ap- preciation of his situation, and whose life 1s a wreck. Colon cott was his attorney from the start, and ulthough there is not dollar in the case, and no prospect of there ever being, and although Jones is not men- tally capable of even appreciating the ser- vice, this_attorney bravely stays by poor Jones, fighting = for him as stoutly as though he was getting fat fees It cannot be for the sake of gaining a reputa- tion, as Colonel Scott has long since passed that point in his career where he needs to thus act. He has all the opportunities which his time and strength will allow, and there are many demands for his services by those who are ready and able to pay liberally. For an attorney of his rank to thus cling to the cause of such an unfortunate can not but ex- cite admiration and give credit to_his declar- ation that he is making the fight in what he honestly believes to be the cause of inno- cent suftering and of right. Jones has been four times convicted, once of murder in the second degree, nud three times of man- or. The'case has been 1o the supreme o times, once on & demurrer, and twice on the merits of the case, and each de- cision Lias been in favor of Jones, the cuse having been twice reversed. Colonel Scott yesterday made a strong general picturing of the peculiarities of the case, and follow this by a close argument of the legal | and a careful, clear showing of the which had crept into the last trial, with rea- sons why & new triul should be granted. ol P Masonic.
