I'"E OMAHA DAILY BEE: FRIDAY, THIE CITY. The internal revenue collections yes- terday amounted to §7,908.74. City Detectives Mike Dempsey and Tom Ormsby are doing most meritorious work in ridding the city of its super- fluity of crooks and bums. These two brave officers seem to possess the powers of ubiquity, and they are accomplishing a8 much as any half dozen men on the force. Mr. G. Pantaleoni, manager of the Westinghouse Electric Light company of Pittsburg, Pa., is in the city and is endeavoring to perfect arrangements for putting in an electric light plant at a cost of half a million of dollars. Local capitalists will be asked to assist in carrying out the echeme, %o it is under- gtood. 1f the project is successful an ef- fort will be made to include South Omaha in the system. Buried By His Friends. All that remains mortal of Arthur Miles, the unfortunate young man who closed his eyes in death at the poor farm, are now lying at the undertaking establishment of Burket. Yesterday the body was moved from the farm by Mr. Burket, and reposes in a hand- some casket secured by humane and consid- erate friends of the deceased. The obsequies will take place to-day. Boston's Vicious Dog. Boston Yumsum has bcen tarrying in the county jail for the last few days serving out a sentence_for disorderly conduct. It now transpires that Boston is not the only dis- orderly part of his household, for a neighbor alleges that he keeps a disorderly and vicious dog about the premises, contrary to law and public safety. Consequently, & warrant was ssued yesterday for the arrest of Yumsum, and as'soon as his present term of servitudé expires it will be served upon Lim. A Jap With the Measles. The various nationalities whose misfortune it is to have to depend on the charity of the country, and through force of circumstances are compelled to take up their abode at the poor farm, have been re-inforced by the presence of aJap. A middle-aged woman, comfortably clad, and dragging after her a girl haraly two years of age, was escorted to the county jail yestorday afternoon by Deputy United States Marshal Showalter, and with her infant charge was locked up in a cell. The name of the woman is Mrs. Dennis Lipps, and she is familiar to a large number of Omaha peopie. Her husband at one time was employed at Metz' brewery, but the couple have lived apart for a number of years. Of late years MFs. Linpe has been Iiying in Fremont, and it was from that place that she was brought yesterday. The United States grand jury has found an indictment against her for seli- ing liquor without a license, and the autl.or- ities clafm o have a good case against her. Mrs. Lipps denies the charge, and yesterday expressed indignation_over the child being locked in & cell with her. She says she adopted the girl some time ago. Locked Up in Dr. McGrew. All-Round Thief in Limbo. George Howard, alias George alias “Dick Deadeye,” a notorious thug and thief, and a pal of the infamous Doug Me- Guire, was arrested Wednesday night' at the corner _ of _ Six- teenth and Nicholas streets, by Ser- geant Mostyn. He was gathered in on sus- picion. Howard is well known here; as he has been sent to jail a dozen times or more, and a few years since was sent to the pen for a big silk robbery here. He is now wanted at Lincoln for grand larceny, and will be held until the authorities there can be heard from. His old side partner, Doug McGuire, is at_present serving a term for highway robbery at Des Moines. “Deadeye’ is a very smooth looking individual; small in stature, with a head of closely cropped red hair, pleasant, intelligent features, marred, however, by the loss of his left eye.” ‘“You are wanted at Lincoln?" asked the court. ‘At Lincoln, if that was the only place T was wanted I'd be happy,” and he smiled ina knowing way. . He was reinanded to his cell to await the action of the authorities at the capital. KNIGHTS OF PYTHIAS. A Notorious Wilson, He Is Fined For Not Having a Thicker Skull. Francis Carney, the man beatenup by Offi- cer Haze, was before the police court yester- day morning and arraigned for druckenness and resisting an officer. The greatjcuts in his head were bandaged up and in his bloody shirt and coat he presented a sorry picture. That he was fined $5 and costs is proof sufficient that the charge of resisting an officer was but meagrely substantiated, and truth of the whole matter ' is, he _ made no istance whatever, and the clubbing = he received was unjust and uncalled for. The efforts made by a morn- ing paperto bolster up Haze's course is de; cidedly diaphanous and unwarranted by the facts in the case.
