A oW years ggo by the Whf5rmunate couduet of the th en pastap, 't s a general scatter: ing ang wnd ehdreh ovganization was well nigh ryjned. Out of the wreck the present pastor, Rev. Dr. Cooley, a wise leader, has gathered up a goodly membership, and rally- ing a large number of others, has succeeded in building up a strong, active and apparently harmonious church. A few have begun another agitation, in favor of s changeV and in order to get a full expression as to the sentiment of the church, a meeting has been held. The vote being taken on the retention of the able pastor, it was decided by an over- whelming majority that he should be re tained. There were less than a dozen who beld a different view. Dr, Cooley has done for this church what few other men could have done, and the members seem to appre. ciate it. e ‘Warburton & Iwarsen, fashionable dressmakers, No. 32 Pearl st. — Office of the Councid Bluffs City Water- 1888.—To No. 115 Pearl street, April 27, nsumers of water: 'This com- pany will consider that all consumers who ave not paid water bills due April 1 before May 2, as wishing to discontinue the use of the water, and upon May 8 all such delin- quents will be shut off without further no- tice. Yesterday a quit claim deed was filed for record by which Frank Clark, who gained such notoFiety in connection with the Man- awa hotel, protends to deed to one ¥. D Mills, of Atchison, Kan., all his interests in the property. The deed is marked at the top, “‘Manayva hotel property,” by which it ap- pears that Clark intended to deed what rights he had in the property, and that Mills supposed he was getting these rights, For sonie reason the deed contains a description of lots in block 81, whereas the hotel is in block 80. ‘This may be a mistake, and if so it needs to be corrected before Mr. Clarke suc- oeeds in deoding whaut rights he may have in that property. 1t is understood that Clark nover claimed 1o have any interest In the block described in the deed, so it must be some mistake. “Phe consideration is only $59, from which it appears that Clark does not consider his equities in the hotel property as very val uable. Itappears that Mills™ took the deed in settlement of some claim against Clark who is now oporating Atchison, and after getting the deed; wrote te parties here to 1ake it off Lis hands, He will doubtless be little surprised to learn that if Clar! Tights to the prope he has 1hem in this instrument, but bas in another block. Talke With Both Sides—The Baptist Church Retains 1ts Pastor—A Double Wedding — The City Fathers. A Fearfual [Fall, Yesterday a startling accident occurred during the progress of the work of tearing down the old Catholic church. A gang of men were on the roof tearing away the old rafters, when several of the timbers sud- denly gave way, falling with a terrible crash into the basement below, and hurling with them four mene The distance wi fully thirty-five feet, and as one of the chimneys fell at the same time, it seemed almost a mir- acle that the men who went down in such a tangled crash of timbers and flying brick es- caped with no fatal injuries. The four who were injured were Henry Slaughter, A. J. Davis, Charles Adams and Buck Poland, They all received cuts and bruises of a painful nature, and were speedily being cared for by Dr. Pinney, whose oftice was fortunately right across the street. Slaughter had a cut on the face, near the ey scratch on the chin, and a painfully bruised hip, but was able to walk and did not consider his in- juries serious. A.J. Davis had a bloody bruise on the check, and his hip and back were quite sore, he having been caught under some of the fall- ing timbers, and unable to get up until th timbers were lifted from off him. He able then to walk about. Charle one of the more seriously injurc tent of his hurts cannot be determined for few days, as he was apparently injured mor internally than oxternally. He was con- scious, though suffering greatly, and was taken to his home on lower Broadway in a jage. Young Poland was also badly hurt, his chest paining him greatl, rendering it difficalt for him to brea There appeared to be no bones broken, and it is hoped that in a few days he may recover fully. John Reech had o most fortunate escape, as he with the other men, but when the ying them down, he clung to k wall, and was not mjured. s that there was great carclessness on the part of those who had charge of the tearing down of the old building, The sup- ports had been removed from under the roof, and the naked rafters were simply resting on the walls with nothing to support them from below, and nothing to prevent their ing or spreading out of place. ‘The worlk of taking down these timbers required somo skillful and esperienced man, who could direct the men carefully, and had su been the case the accident would probabl __Iwm have been avoided. As it was the escape from fatal consequences was very fortunate. — The oldest firm, and largest stock of wall paper in the city. All the new shades in ingrains and valours. A few patterns in gilts at 10c per roil Niles, 402 Broadway. it That Democratic Split, An article appeared in yesterday morn- ing's Republican to the effect that Robert Huntington, the recently defeated candidate for the office of city clerk, who acted as tel- ler at the caucus in the First ward, had *tconfessed” to counting Whaterman in, and Rudio out in the-cold. Asitseemed emi nently unreasonable that a person should confess such a thing even if guilty, a Bee reporter called upon Mr. Huntington, and asked if the statement was true. He promptly characterized it as a “‘barc-faced lie, unqualified by and malicious! and said the most that he had eve to the matter was that he had worked harder for Waterman's nomination than any one else in the First ward, and that he thought Waterman's action in afterward voting against him in the city council most ungrate- ful. In regard to the report that the Young Men's Democratic club is to be reorganized with Mr. Huntington as president, that gen- tleman spoke as follows: “I am aware that there is much dissatis- faction existing within the club over the recent action of the councilin particular, and the general action of the leaders in general but as far as the breakingup of this club and the organizing of a new one is concerncd, the idea is simply preposterous.” One of the leading “bolters” is Dan Car- rige, who expressed himself in this manner: “Tam sorry Iwas o _democrat at thg last election, bt I wowt be caught the same oy again. Some of us are disgusted with the vay these old ‘ring’ b are doing busi- d wé are gongout on a strike. Weo it all plafined, and there are just thir- of these fellows who are licking off the cream now, who will be slaughtered. We won't have anything to do with them, and they can’t even attend our meetings when we reorganize, You say there are five demo- crats in the council, but there are but tw Kepher and Bellinger. I tell you we f sofe towards Waterman and we don't deny it. Tadmire Weaver, even if he was against us, for he stood straight clear through, but Waterman made 4 stand and then sneaked out, and we have no use for him. This talk about Bowman and his gang doing all the work is wrong, for other folks do the work and they get the benefit. If we can’t win an election we can throw it to the republicans.” Mayor Rohrer was asked for his opinion in the matter, and sai “Why, its the great- est lot of bosh I have heard in a long time. They talk about having money to buy anews- paper and all such things, but I waht to see it before I believe it. I don’t believe they can even make a little jingle. They will have their little splurge, but I don't think they will ever attempt to make a split.” Money at low rates on first-clags 1arm security. Burnham, Tulleys & Co., 102 Main street, ——-— J.
