New York, April 30.—[Special Telegram 1o the Bre.]—Stocks—The stock market w8 agtive, ng,qatm'r,.‘:-r on the mn)nnl) nl notive properties, fessionals trad more freedom, ln? pmndo orders are mm ing more plentiful, but there 18 still room for a decided improvement in that line. Oper- ators depend a great deal on London, and as that market was stronger and higher, and sent orders to wall street for 50,000 shares, it gave a strong tone to the market. Gould is still talking bullish, but there are many shrewd operators who be- lieve there is an object in that gentleman’s methods, and that he will continue to have himself interviewed until the market broadens out sufficiently to enable him and his friends to get out of their stocks bought at materially lower prices, Before midday the professionals began selling freely. Many long stocks were unloaded and short sales made for a time. Prices, however, continued in their upward course, timid shorts rushed 10 cover and stocks advanced 1¢ to 2 points. During the last hour, however, a weak, un- settled feeling prevailed, stocks came out freely, and nearly the whole list weakened irregularly and the market closed ragged. Burlington, after advancing 2 points, weak- ened and closed % below Saturday. Man- hattan jumped up 1 point and finished i lower. Missouri Pacific was the leader, and gained 23, but secured a2 point rise. St. Paul f"fl the Northwestern closed J better, ead n and Lackawanna % ‘botter, Oregon ‘rariscontinental 1 lower, Ohio & Missis- #ippi ¢ lower, New England }{ lower, Cot- ofl certificates % and Western Union 1§ higher.
