SoUTHARD, City Clerks T i ATTER of application for BRIGHT OUTLOOK FOR CATTLE How Stock-Raising Has Evoluted in Recent Years. THE DEMAND FOR FINE STOCK. Growth of the Business of Fancy Cat- tle Breeding—The Range Inters ests—Higher Prices For Cate tle Predicted. Denver Republican: The business of cattle-growing in Colorado during the past year gives rather more {avorable promise for the future than pleasure in the past. Prices of beef cattle have ruled lower than they were during the preceding year, and they had got so low that it hardly scemed as though they could go any lower, while the ma- jority of men were seeking to reduce losses instead of calculating profits. Then there were scores of cattle owners who, led by the previously prevailing high prices, had bought as heavily as possible of young Texans and involved themselves deeply in debt. The latter portion of 1886 and the whole of the past year were periods of liquidatio and now the banks are carrying com- varatively little paper, while there have been no failures among cattle- owners. The fact that the business is no longer conducted so largely upon borrowed capital is one of the healthiest signs connected with it. A NOTICEABLE FEATURE, Next to the low prices for beef cattle the features most noticeable are the re- duction of range area and the introduc- tion of large numbers of fine bred breed- ing stock on the range. The reduction of the range area is due to the settle- ment in the castern portion of the state of alarge number of farmers in o terri- tory which was formerly used solely for catile ranges. This hascompelled some men to practically quit the business and sell off as many of their cattle as possi- ble, simply because they could find no range upon which to place them. The introduction of a large number of fine bred breeding animals into the herds of the state is the natural re- sult of the lessening public range. It isone evidence of the well known fact that the method of conducting the rattle business in Colorado has changed materially during the past two or three years. The overstocked public ranges have compelled breeders to make arcangements to feed and shel- ter much of their stock, which in turn has necessarily compelled them to breed a better class of cattle in order to ob- tain the best possible profits. Texans was good enough and possibly the best cattle for the wide plain ranges, but they are not the best cattle to feed or breed where feeding is necessary. The public range is not by any means en- tirely abandoned, and will not be aban- doned for many years to come, but the old ways of doing the business and the old profits obtained while grass was abundant on the public domuin are gone forever. DEMAND FOR FINE The demand for fin vially affected business in this city, and made Denver the best market in the United States for blooded horned stoc The first public sale of cattle in Denver took place about two years ago, and during the past year twenty-five sules have been made. On the first day of June Messrs. Goulding & Co. had conducted nineteen of these sales, and disposed of 1.506 blooded cattle for $178,443, or an average of about $110 perhead. During the saume time the sales of other fine animals, not made at auction, have amounted to 864,000, Last ar on the first day of Jahuary, but one dato for o public sale’ had been claimed, and now six dates are claimed for February, which fact indicated that this year’s business in this line will be greater than iast year's. Sales have been made to breeders in Montana, Arizona, and California, and all the other western states and territo- ries, including Kansas and Nebraska on the east, from which direction no trade was ted. Among the milk breeds Jerseys and Holsteing are the only kinds sold and the supply of the latter has not equal the demand. This breed has met with remarkable favor among the daivymen. There was some doubt not longago about their adaption to this climate, as their natural home, where they have been bred for centuries, was the low and moist Netherlands, where the grass grows luxuriantly—the very opposite of the conditions prevailing’in Colorado Another feature of this market is th 95 per cent, of all saies are made for w stock has mate- SR PURCITASES OF TEXAS STE Tho purchases of Texas eattle in Col- orado in this state have been less than for many y pust. The total number inspected and entered the state on its southern border was 96,698, and of this number 44,467 went into Wyoming and other northern ranges, leaving 52,231 as the number of Texans placed on Col- orado ranges during the year. The grass during the past summer grew abundantly und_cured well, und cattle now are as a whole in better con- dition than they were one year ago. The winter of 86 and 87 was very favorable for range cattle. The snows and cold were not_deep or severe, and there were no drifting storms, such as were 8o fatal during the previous winte A SMALL WINTER LOSS. As a consequence, the loss in Colo- rado was very small. Unfortunately, in the regious’ north of this state the losses were heavier than they have been sinee the beginning of the busi- ness. This winter, so far, has ‘been as favorable as could be asked for by eattle owners, Fires have not been destrue- tive to the ranges, so far as known but one haying done any damage. On the 1 of the Missouri Pacilic, on the Sandy, about ten miles squarc have been burned over. During the year the railways have reduced rates on cattle to Chicago about 812 per car, while dur- ing the previous year they were ad- vanced 820 per car.” Freight rates ar still higher than they were when prices were 75 per cent above present quota- tions. Range cattle owners have suffered s vere lossesduring th ar from thieves, Hundreds of cattle hs been killed in the eastern portion of the state, duc partly, no doubt, to the fact that no con- side le datective force has been em- ployed, as formerly, by the Colorado Cattle Growers' association. A few, however, have 21y been convieted and sent to the penitentiary through the ef- forts of the association, which will fur- nish some protection in the future. THE RANGE ASSOCIATION. The Range association and other or- ganizations, having for one of their ob- jeets the taking control of the prices of cattle out of the hands of the Chicago buyers, have apparently not yet accom- plishod any good, though it nay be 1o y to expect anything of the kind. For the past threo yeurs, the lust year move than before, the sules of young steors and she stock for beef have been enormous. This fact, coupled with th enormous lesses in the northern region | last winter must cortainly soon seriously affect the supply of beef cattle and ‘ex ert a tendency to raise prices. 1t cor tainly scoms s if the ora of better prices could not be far away, ——— Beauty and Fragrance.
