The wife and father, H. C. Thurman, have been in the city since Monday. The fiast plan i was to bury the remains here, but after deliberation it was decided to re- move them to t. Joseph for interment. Con- sequently the body, accompanied by the fam- 1ly, was taken south over the Kansas City last evening at 9:50 o'clock. ‘There was a quict_wedding Tuesday eve- ning at the home of Rev. Dr.” Cooley, pastor, of the Fiirst Baptist church. That worthy clergyman was no the officiating one, but he was peculiarly interested in the cere- aony, the bride being none other than his @aughiter, Miss Mary A. Cooley. The fortu- nate winner of this estimable young lady was Clarence J. McNitt, a young man quite well- known in this city. The ceremony was pe formed in the presence of the family only, and the affair was as happy @8 it Was unos. tentatious. The newly wedded ones will make this city their home, and will be the recipients of numerous congratulations by their many friends. Ata meeting of the Council Bluffs Lumber company held in this city December 23, for the purpose of electing officers to fill the wvacancies caused by the death of E.Irons and resignation of C. H. Smith. M. J. Irons an Henry Stevenson were elected directors. M. J. Irons was then elected vice president and Henry Stevenson secretary and treasurer, Mr, Stevenson will have the management of the business of the company. He is in every sense well qualified for the position. With a thorough kuowledge of the wants of the trade he combines energy, push and an afta- bility of manner that makes personal friends of business acquaintances. The Stevensons are from the lumber regions of Wisconsin, d for several years have been carrying on @ large number of country yards in Nebraska, under the name of the Stevenson Lumber company, of which Mr. Henry Stevenson is also secretary. His residence being estab- Jished in this city, ho expects at no distant date to remove the business headquarters of that company to Council Bluffs, The coufidence man is now heard of again In a little different game. This time the vie- tim is J. . Oliver, me! t tailor. About six weeks ago a man calling himself Mr. Hall, and claiming to be a traveling man for @ hardware firm, entered Mr. Oliver's Broad- way estsblishment and ordered a light over- coat. It was made for him, and when he called for it he paid the cash, at the same time ordering a heavy overcoat and a pair of pantaloons, A few days ago he entered the re and wanted the goods. He had $35, and promised to pay the balance the first of themonth. Mr. Oliver put the clothes back in the case, and said that he would wait for the money.” After the man had gone the pro- gnuwr turned to his cutter, and expressed is opinion that the fellow was a confidence man, and that the clothes must not be turned over 1o him unless cash was paid for them. ‘The man called again Tuesday evening in the absence of Mr. Oliver, and asked the cutter to accompany him to his room, and he would pay the money. The game worked well, and when at the foot of the stairs at the Main strect entrace of the Beno block the fellow said “'Wait until I go up to my office and get my keys.” The duped cutter waited, and soon heard his man going down the Pearl street stairway. It then dawned upon him that he was tricked, and he informed the police, but the clothes were gone, and the man is still after his keys. It makes Mr. Oliver very tired to think that his cutter should be beaten after receiving special in uctions. Troxel Bros. headquarters for Christ- mas poultry. THE BOYS WITH THE CARDS. A Glance at the Tax Tables and Good Bized Totalings—A Strange Co- incidence — A Goddess Well Smoked. Another Land Contest. There is a tract of land beginniug just west of the Union Pacific grounds and running north to Cutoff lake. Here it extends east for a considerable distance. This land is for the most part unoccupied. During the past few years squatters have settled upon por- tions of it. Ejectment notices have been from time to time served upon these parties, but they have thus far held their ground. There is now a suit pending which involves the ownership of this property, valued at from eighty to one hundred thousand dol- lars, he property has not until now been entered for taxation. Yesterday R. W. Breckenridge entered this property and filed copies of the original government patents with Recorder Roberts. These patents were issued in 1855, when Franklin Pierce was president of the United States. They are as follows: To Andrew Hanscom the nely of sectian 28, township 75, range 44 west, Kanes- Jesse Williams, lot 8, fractional section nship 75 north, range 44 west, Kanes- ; Samuel Riddle 77 acres, Ann Snow 63 John_Jones 150 acres, Benjumin Havi mudd Jeffris acres, Philip Ballard 63 acres, Peter 160 acres, all in Kanesville, Dr. Jeffris, son of Edmund Jeffris, whose name appears as one of the original grantees, is party to the suit referred to. Here again is an indication of future pros- perity. This de up of good and bud, i8 to-day of sufficient value to warrant the payment of taxes—so evidently think those interested in this case. The demand for building advantages hus created in_ this property a value sufficient to warrant a legal contest for its po n and ownership, i i An aceeptable present at any time. As the BEE man was perambulating about the city last evening he noticed that all the gambling houses were in full blast, and asked one of the ‘‘knights of the green cloth” if the resignation of the mayor was the cause of the onening, or whether his order had been repealed. “*Oh, you nowspaper fellows ‘called the turn’ all right when you said that the order was just a dodge to ward off the sus picions of the grand jury. We had to do it to protect ourselves. Mayor Groneweg didn't care anything about how we run, and all he had to do with it was to simply accede to our wishes when we asked him to close us up. We have to look after our interests as much as anybody else, and we will show you sev- eral other tricks before the game is over. A game is never out until it is played out, and we still hold & handful of trumps. But we learned one lesson, and don’t run auy more ‘stud’ games. They were what caused the racket before, and I don’t think theve is one now running in the city.” ‘“‘Another grand jury meets on the 24th of January, and you don’t expect to fool them the same way, do you!" “Ne mind about that, will tell you one thirg. Vernon, Tex., correspondence of the St. Louis Republican: Residing in this county there is a gentleman who, on several occasions, has cut a long figure and has been to a no inconsider- able extent looked-up to, in matters wherein the decpestinterest of the peo- le at large has been centered. The individual who is vreferred to is Hon. H. C. Thruston, and he is known as the tallest man in Texas, and it is scarcely necessary to say that the distinction brings a flush of "pride to his cheeks. The atten of the writer to the subject of this sketch was at- tracted during the late contest between the prohibitionists and antis. One day previous to the big meeting at Fort Worth, Mr. Thruston boarded a Cotton Belt train, The passengers noticed the violent swaying back and forth of the :1l-rope, and loo for the cause, xan Goliah was noticed advanc- ing up the aisle, plug hat in hand, vainly trying to walk under the cord which threatened to hang our friend first by one ear and then by the other. The gentleman had no more than taken his seat than he was stared at from the gazed at from the front, and ip from all sides. Seats were reversed to avoid necks hcinfi' strained, and near ones commande a premium, At ttshurg the train stopped for supper; and Mr, Thruston having taken tea before starting on his journey, took a position on the depot platform, where, for the space of thirty minutes, he was looded at, quizzed, yuyed, complimented, interrogated, and f.y the smallest boy and longest man i the crowd, deeply envied, Mr. Thrus- ton was in .lni'orm, the blue and brass having been given him by the antis, for whom in w. ;{:omhwnl meetings and processions he held alojt the ban- ner to which he was ever friendly. Mr. Thruston was born in Greenville district, South Carolina, 1n 1830, - Leav- ing that place at the age of theee years he became a resident of Mor‘fnn wul&.
