Serious Questions of Tax Titles The Sinners Brought Be Police Bar-1 In the di case of it court y Jonathan Jones was called, and the afternoon spent in empanelling a jury. This has dragged along until it is decidedly chestnutty. and still iteis one of great importance, and one wiieh has greatly inte 1 the public. Duvid Roberts was killed in 1878, and Jonathan Jones, a neigh was rested charged with murder. On the first teinl he was found guilty of man- slaughter, and sentenced to fourt years in the penitentinry. ing a short time he secured & new trial, and was the second time found guilty, but wis sentenced to only seven years. In May last he was tried o third time, and again found ty, but Judge Carson granted o new trial. and now the ease comes up agaim. The de- fense has been that there was no sufti- ciency of evidence, and further that Jones was not in such mental condition as 10 be responsible for his acts. Jones tainly for several years heen in tinlly insane or demented condi- and” this has been apparent to It is claimed that this shadow upon him has rested since childhood, and that he has always been queer. The state will endeavor to show that even if he is insane now. he was not o at the time of the tragedy. Jones is in court, but as on the previous, trial he seems as unconcerned as though he was of wood. William Lauren was discharged, with instructions to get out of the city inside of two hours. The cases of the three men. Turner, Monroe and Wilson, charged with the larceny of a rubber coat from M. M- cus, came before Judge Aylesworth yesterday afternoon. After cxamining afew witnesses the cases wer i ued until this morning. The case of R. A. Parett w: called, and after pleading guilty several charges, he said that he would start for Colorado within an hour if re- 1 d, as all he wanted to do was just to go home and get some clothes, His wife was afraid to trust him, as he had :ned her life, so he wus remanded . Tax Titlo Q1 Questions, Aylesworth rendered a decision wd to a tax deed which interests v, us the same question involves a great many similar deeds. 1t appears that the treasurer has been in the habit ing the delinquent taxes on a te book instead of having them w on the regular tax list, as re- quired by law, under the construction given toit by Judge Aylesworth. The judge deems that this requirement of fnw is for the purpose of protecting the for if the delinquent taxes appear in another column, on the same book, the treasurer is reminded that there are delinquent taxes, and the prope owner, when he goes to pay his taxes, is very likely to como into possession of the same im- portant bit of information. By keeping the delinquent tax list on a separate book, the taxes are overlooked and the property may be sold for taxes without the knowledge of the owner. ' Hence the purpose of the law requiving delin- quent taxes to be kept on the sume book, in an additional column. The same question is pending in the district court in some cases brought there, to quiet title, and®ome further nlvu;nuu- are being l«ml\-d for. The finuncial troubles of the Bechtele hotel have resulted in the sheriff taking possession. There is a first mortgage on the building and real estate for about 49.000 in favor of H. L. Knowles, New York, and foreclosure proceedings have commenced. There was a second mort- goge.and a chattel mortgage on the furniture to secure a claim of about 49,000 more, owned by Charles Straub and Herman Brown, of this city. Tt was under this chattel mortgage that the sheriff took possession, and the work of inventorying began. Thus it seems that the liabilities are from $18,000 to $20000.
