The opening was strong, with advances ex- tending to 11§ per cent. This was regarded as a natural reacting, as one is due after the recent slow decline. The shorts took in large lines and the longs seemed more dis- posed to support their specialtios. London, instead of selliing, as was expected, sent in five buying order: The best information or opinion of the Baltimore & Ohio in passing its dividend being that in effect it had been largely discounted abroad and is appreciated there for what it is, namely, an insolated case of mismanagement that is now being rem- edied. Lake Shore, Union P e and Read- ing were prominent for their recuperation, the former receiving material help from a bull pool, headed by Connor, who bought it on every break and advanced prices 1§ per cent, Reading at one time sold i per cent below yesterday's close, but it showed more resistance to the selling pressure and rallied 13 per cent. Thestrength in Reading and Lake Shore exerted a good effect on’ the general Jist and slight advances were recorded up to mid-day on all except St. Paul, which tum- bled 2 points and touched 70%. On the bulge the bears attacked the market and a running fight ensued, with varying suc- cess. The bears, however, had the best of it, taking the entire list. Atchinson led the downward movement and tumbled to 92, but when the reaction came in the closing hour it advanoed to %, The rest of the list followed and last sales on a majority of the active stocks were at the highest figures of the day and recorded advances extending to 134 per cent, the latter being on Readin, Union Pacific was up 1§, Northwestern 3 1 ouisvilk ashville and Lake Shore 1} per cent.
