A W-lkor, of the Massa- chusetts school of technology, speaking of the necessity of manual rnlnlng for our youth, before the wlchon conven- tion at Chicago, said: ‘‘As we pass from rural districts and smali villages to con- siderable towns and to large cities, smd he, the need of manual training for our youth increases rapidly, while the difli- culties of 1nstituting and maintajning in- struction 1n any one of the mechanic arts even more rapidly diminish, In the country the children of either sex find abundunt opportunities, both in their work and in their plav, for acquiring the nlmwludfio of mechanical operations and some skill 1n the use of tools, while all the conditions and curronmflnm of their life tend to develop the Ilorcenuvs powers, to create a habit of observation, and to give exercise to the exeuuuva hcultX No part of this is as well done us it would be under systematic instruction and direction, but what is gained in this way 18 far better than nothing. In the city opportunities of this character are almost wholly wanting, and the time that should be nvu to developing this side of the child’s nature, is either wasted in idleness and mischief or 1s devoted to an excess of grammatical, rhotorieal and dialetical practice, or to cramming the mind with facts, uames and dates, be- yond the power of mental dmcsuou. On the other hand, the difliculties of pro- viding proper instruction in the mechanic arts in small schools, widely seattered, supported by compnrnlwulv poor com- munities, almost wholly disappear in large and well-graded schools,in compact communities enjoying the wealth and the paving power which is gener- ated u{ commerce and manufac- tures. t s, here, onl A ques- tion whether this kind of in truction is really needed. If that bes admitted, there will not long be a question of the means of maintaining it. And in the Iarger towns and cities it will be found that the cost of maintaining the very best instruction of this character will not be r('ntly in excess of the cost of supporung the simplest form of manual training in smaller communities, inasmuch as the initial charges for the more expensive plant will be divided, with a proper or- ganizution of the service, among a larger number of scholars. The main question will here be as to obtaining the time requisite for thorough and extended practice on thisside of the publicschools. It is believed! that time required can be obtained by the proper revision of the traditional courses. A great part, at least, if not the whole of the inevitable loss tn the old-fashioned studies will be repaid by the greater interest of pupils and parents in school work by the relaxa- and rest obtained through the exercise of another set of faculties, and by the great Zain experienced in the study of geom- etry, physics and elementary mechanics tbrough such practice. Sridamistaibe I Unrestricted Immigration, Boston Commercial Bullctin: The sub- *ect of immigration 18 one of constantly ncreasing importance. Hordes of deni- zens of the densoly populated countries of the eastern hemisphere are coming to our shores 1n constantly mcreasing num- bers. What are we to do with them? Are the opportunities for them to make a living as favorable as twenty fum ago, when realroad building first Iargely set in, and business generally was booming on the termination of the war? The present conditions do not favor an affirmative answer. Yct we have faith to believe that thereis ?ot plenty of room for men and womeu who are willing to work, to make a living in this land, and benefit not only themselves, but add to the national groumrlty In the south, southwest and the farther western regions of territory, land is to be had cheap, lnclories of all Kinds demand 1aborers, mining does and will furnish flmnluymcnl to thousands; and the more our population is added to the greater the consumptive demand for the necessi- ties and luxuries of life, 1t is plainly to be seen that one element opposed to immigration is that of the dis- satistied classcs, mostly of foreign birth, who have done so much by strikes to re- tard the industrial activities and par- alyze all kinds of business. They have become insolent through prosperity, and attempt to control now where a genera- tion ago thoy were only too glad to servo. They assume a dog-in-the-manger attitude, There should be restrictions upon im- migration; no one denies that. We do not want a class of criminals and pau- pers from the very worse elements of old world population, ‘This contingency is already provided against by law. T'o in- dustrious, sober people who seek a por- manent home in America we ofier wel- come and bid them take their chances. Honest work will insure them a fair living. For socialists, anarchists, 1 pickers, garbage gatherers, organ grin ors, d all such as live upon |§n roduc- ing classes, we have no room. roduc- tive encrgy is neecded; there is always room for 1t in this land. In the German, Irish, Scotch, Scandin- avian and Welsh elements that have been assimilated with us Americans 1n devel- oping the resoarces of the country too much credit cannot be given. They have thrown in their lot with us for good, and all the mutual prosperity bas ensued. So it will continue to be with the thousands yet to come who have honest motives and adopt the American idea of progress and patriotism. A study of the report from the byreau of statistics, Washington, for the year emflng June 80, 1887, is of interest. It pears that the total immigration was ,116, an increase over 1880 of 154,321, 0( these 86,200 were landed at Boston. New York, of course, took the largest number, 370 005, and San Francisco the smallest, 1,726, Boston ranks next to New Ymk Imrely outranking Baltimore, As to mmunn]uy the largest number came from Great Britain and Ireland— 160,783. But so diverse are the popula- tions of these two 1sles that for the pur- voses of comparison thoy ought to be taken separately, and doing so we find that England and Wales sent 50,161, [re- land 49,196, Scotland 12,114, Now Ger- many exceeded either of these compara- tively separate nationalities by giving us of her sons and daughters 106,559, and mai are the industrious, plodding, home- makin| cople that lwlp to make the bone nn sinew of a nation. ‘T'he French are a home-loving peovle, and ouly 5,034 came out, and not many to stay perma- nently, we may venture to say. Italy ave us 47,724—such as they were. From Scandinuvia came 58,741-—good, industri- ous souls, whose forerunners have done 80 much to build up the great northwest, ‘T'he past has been a great year for im- migration. We see no renson why the present should not be, Let them come and may the fittest survive, ki b Ll A Perilons Postponement, To postpone, when the duty for imme- diate action 18 clear, is always unwise, Especially 18 it so when increasing ill health calls for a resort to medication, Diseases of the kidneys and bladder are often of swift growth—always of fatal tendency if not combatted at the outset. We have all—even those of us who are not remarkably well instructed ~heurd something of the danger attending Bright's dicease, diabetes, and other dis- eases of the Iudncy and bladder. Let no one be foolhardy enough to procrasti- nate if he pereeive the enal organs to be inactive. ~ Hostetter's Stomach Bitters are peculiarly adapted to overcome this inaction, to sufliciently stimulate, with- out exciting the kidneys and bladder, Infinitely is this diuretic to be vreferred to the impure and fi stimulants ot commerce, which proyes to be the bane of unwary persons with a tendency to renal troubles, ‘They are likewise in- comparable for dyspepsia, dewility, fever and ague, and bnhuuluuu. DECORATIVE ART. THIRTY YEARS IN THE CITY OF CHICAGO. One of the Oldest Inhabitants Gives a Thrilling Experience of His Rescue from Death. —_— From the Chicago Dmly News June 23, 187 In public places, especially in the summer season, the eye is often attracted by neat decorations ‘which embellish chandeliers and ceilings as protection againsi those hu- man pests, the flies, which, however, serve their purpose as the scavengers of the air, The designs employed are ofttimes reall works of art. and'the deft way in whicl they are attachted to walls and " ceilings so as o propect them, gives an impression of airy lightness which is pleasing to the eye. No man has probably spent so much time in Chicago on this line cf trade as the sub- ject of the following sketch; He has been a resident of Chicago for thuty years, comi here with his parents when only 10 years ol age, arid having grown up with the city h name is known to thousands of her people, Within a short time such a wonderful change has taken place in his [;| ersonal ap- pearance that it has attracted the attention of his friends as well as that of a reporter, who called upon him withina day or two and obtained the following sworn statemend, Personally appeared before me, George ‘W. Hoover, No 278 West Twelfth street, who, bein, bwom according to law, doth depose an hat I I\lve bucn ill for two or three yelu with a lung trouble, which a short time' since resulted in hemorrhage, o that I re-, marked to my wife: I think about next full’ I will finish up, That I have paid out hun< dreds of dollars in the past two years for medicine and advice, but nothing did me any practical good. I would stop coughing foran hour or so, but it would come again next day, The relief affordéd me was only temdorary. I read of the numerous cures, which had been effected by Dr. McCoy in" the papers, and they described so closely my symptoms that I called upon him at No. 10 Park Row. Dr. McCoy told me that I had catarrhal bronchitis, and there was serions trouble with the right lung in the form of an abscess. I was put under the treatment, and he gave me relief right. away. The night sweats with whichl had been troubled have left me and I now rest well, I began the ‘featment on the 23d of May last, I used to cough ever morning; would get sick at the stomach. have been very nearly strangled trying to get something up when there was nothing to come up. But now I am doing splen= didly. Have a clear head. I am not clouded up. I can travel all day and not tire out, and I can assure you my work re- quires me to go about a great deal. Tam satisfied that i1 had not_gone under this treatment I should have been compelled to stop work entirely, and this is my busy season. I was obliged on account” of my lrouble to leave a very easy situation about a year ago because I could not stand the night air aud was constantly taking cold, I have not felt so well for years as I do now, and I work hard, too. My friends remark my improved Arpenrlnce. and [ have gained five pounds in the little time, which I have been under treatment, and I 1 am convinced that a cure will be effected., GEORGE W, HOOVER. gworn and subscribed before me this IM day of June, 1897, RANDALL H. WHITE, Justice of the Peace. Dr. McCoy 18 now_located {n Omaha, At the corner ot 16th ane Harney #ts., Ramge Block LEADS TO CONSUMPTIO Interesting Evidence of a Condi- tion Not to Be Trifled With. The disease from which Mr. Hoover suf- fered was catarrhal consumption, The diseasc originated in a cold, which became. chronic. As a result came the formation of mucus, which was tly diecharged irom the head or dropped down the throat and was partially hawked u A large portion of it, however, was swollowed, passing into the stomach and causing catarrh there, The mucus formed by catarrh decomposes, and when it reaches the stomach is either® absorbed in the blood, producing all manner of evil symptoms, or else coats over the food with a slimy material, which prevents the food from coming in contact with the digestive juices in the stomach. ‘The food itself decompotes. forms gas or wind in large quantities, and causes a feel- ing of bloating or fullness after eating. hen the catarrh has existed in the head and the upper part of the throat for any length of time—the patient living ina | district where people are subject to catarrh- al affection—and the disease ‘has been left uncured, the catarsh invariably, sometimes slowly, extends down the windpipe and into the bronchial tubes, which tubes con- vey the air to the difierent parts of the lungs. The tubes becomc aftected from the swelling and the mucus arising from catarrh, and in some instances becomes })Iugged up 50 that the air cannot get in as reely as it should. Shortness of breath follows and the patient breathes with labor and difficulty, In either case there isa sound of crack- ling and wheezing inside the chest. Al this stage of the discase the breathing is usually more rapid than when in health, ‘The patient also has hot flashes over his body.
