[FROM THE BEE'S LINCOLN DUREAU.] The new board of transportation metm the oflice at the capitol yesterday morning and organ under the new law, As now constituted the board is as follows Wiiliam Le chairman; G. [ A secretary; A. . Babeock, C. I \\nmrd and Joseph Scott, commissioners; P Mason, Lincoln; J. H. Ager, ()rn|,nml ‘W. H. Munger, Fremont, sceretaries; H. M. Warring, secretary and chief clerk It may be mentioned that the nam the board changes under the new law which went into cffect yesterday from commissioners to board of transportation, and the number isincreascd from three to five by the addition of the state treasurer, C. H. Willard, and commissioner of public lands and buildings, Joseph Scott. Considerable time was spent by the board arranging the details of the business and familiariz- ing themselves with the new provisions, It follows rather closcly the inter-stato law, and was championed by Senator Conger in the senate and J. C. Watson in the house. The board is requested to ,make a report to the governor on the 1st “of December, and the seeretary will com- amence on that report at once and add to A it the reports made by the they come in. ! elected stenographer and sceretar outupnoqnwu A new scal, as required i law, been ordered, by which acts of the board shall be authcnticated. COMPLAINTS, Petitions signed by from ten to fifty rsons have been rec from Cres- n, Howells, Leigh, Nickerson, Scrib- wmer, Stanton, Clarkson, Wisner, Lind. say, Newman's Grove and Pilzer, in re ard to lumber rates in this porticn of o0 state and on the Union Pacitic and Northweste petitions are as fol- lows, all being ali To the Honorable soard of Rallwa misgioners of the State of Nebraska—Gentle- anen: We would respectfully cail your hon- orable boay’s attention to the rates on lum- ber and building material from the western markets to nearly all points in northern Ne- braska, which we most assuredly bellove @ bo unjusi’ ‘and “cortai inly * from Com- % " per cent higher than bllou the euactment of the inter-state col merce law. We have been fighting these rlles until we find it utterly uscless and un- less we have relief soon, we will be com- iled to advance the price of lumber from 2 to §3 per 1,000, which would serionsly affect every consimer in northern Nebraska. ‘We would, therefore, petition your honor- sble body to Investicate this matter and i found as stated. do your utmost towards effecting a reduction of the rates on this com- aodity, which 15 one of the most necessary o the people of this state, Judge Muson has taken these pef tions ~ for examination nd will Aarrange to act upon them or file a complaint with the mational commission. There seems to be } Bome trouble with the express comy #nd their churges, and a complaint 18 likely to be filed in regard to discrimina- tion. One member of the board inti- mated that express companies would be held to be common carriers and subject to the provisions of the law. A GAMBUING RAID, ‘The police mude a midnightraid Thurs- !mzl\lonllu- ambling rooms over the Quick saloon, commonly supposed to be owned and managed through John BSheedy. The police tirst gnarded every avenue of escape, incl lmlmg the street J djacent to the windows, and then de manded admission, \mh was re- fused. After & seige of an hour the doors were opened and only a solitary man found in the ele- gant apartment. “But there was a second room dark, and the door locked and bolted. An axe was secured to chop down the door, but Policeman Mitchel thought his hrogxms were good Lnou%,h. and began to kick with such effect that the door was broken open, and striking light six sad-eyed men were discovered ave the names of Frank Doelson, on, John Whitney and ch. tables and covers were hustled ((uwn to the side- walk, and were to be carried away, when a doputy shenft arrived with a replevin forn-ogoods 1ssued by that great and 500&! justice, J. H. Brown. The marshal livered the property to the oflicer all except the chips. which could not be found. The replevin was sued out by another gambler and is a mere ruse to prevant the property from being de- stroyed. John Sheedy gave his personal recogmzance for the appearance of the arrested parties, ‘This morning they all sppeared in police court and plead lll. to the charge of gambling and 0] nnzngmnhlmg house, and paid out, »onn and Bock, us keepers of the plac were fined $25 and costs, and the oth $10 and costs each. What the people are now anxious to know 1s whether or ot tha replevin of the paraphernalia will ge allowed to go by default, and the stuff converted back lo the gamblers The law and order people would like to soe the muatter followed up, especially as ‘Wrihere is now a more stringent law on the subject. Mr. Edward Harrigan’s appearance t night at the Boyd, drew a full house. It also drew an enthusiastic house, a house which laughed at and applauded almost every act which was introduced upon the stage. “The Leather Patch is what may be termed a picture of life among the lowly in the great cities. Itisa hon-rogmous conitination of Irish, Germans, Hebrew s, Americans, Africans, b drivers, bar- risters and undertakers. The hero is an undertaker, and the other characters are of almost every calling under the sun The plot is simplicity itself, and too ridiculous to be even probable. But no auditor looks for probability in Harri- gan's I)lflyu ‘They entertain, convulse wnh aughter, and but seldom ele vate, The; deal with the lower classes and afford glimpses of lifo which is seldom, except for a moment, ible on the mvmdr matic stage. At times they abound in exaggeration, but the ex- aggeration only conduces to hearty Iaughter, which'is the mainspring of the undertakin In their own way the actors who sur- round Mr. Harrigan are admirably qual- ified for their work. This is_especially true of John Wild and Dan Coliyer, re- spectively as Jefferson Putnum and Caro- line Hyer. Mrs. Annie Yeaman's accorded a liberal reception, and her de- lineation of M:\l( ine McCarthy was ex- celient in every respeet. Mr. Harrigan made a demure undertaker, illustr: the sombre and uninviting char with flashes of wit, humor, exc rrace and oceasional evidences that higher walk of the dr: aptly have been cho To-mght Mr. Harrigan § great success “Cordelia’s Aspirations,” will be pre sented.
