5 i THE OMAHA DAILY BEE: e WHEAT ON THE CURB WEAK. The Trading Orowd Greatly at Sea as to the Course of Prices, MYSTERIOUS CLIQUE MOVES. Corn Opens a Fraction Lower For Future Delivery—~More Interest Taken in Provisions — Beef Cattle Study—Quntations, CHICAGO PRODUCE MARKET. CiteaGo, Avril 2.-- Special Telegram to | the B ]—Wheat was weak on tae cutb yesterday afternoon, and this morning, and | sold down to ¥2'e for May, which was the | markctat the regular opening, with June | quoted at 81'%5c and July at e, The trad- | ing crowd was at sea as to the course of | prices. Many thought that the eliques had pretty well worked out of their May deal, while others were satisticd fhat they were still heavily long, and that “the end was not yet.” Evidently tue end is not yet, May | chan ced 11@1Cc above June, which would | be 132 above May, if the normal condi- tion prevailed. 1tis admitted that a very large amount of long wheat was sold out on | the advance during the past three days, but | the relative position of May and June s ac- cep by pearly everybody as evidence con- clusive that the specilative long futerest is still a large one. A number of timid or light- waisted shorts were driven in on the last bulge, that culminated at $3¢e, and in usu- ally well intormed cireles the im- pression is deeply grounded that the so-called speculative short interest yet re- maining is very largely represented by the wheat in store in Chicago and in the ware- houses turough the northwest back of Chi- cago. A great majority of the receiving houses are said to appear on the bouks as “short” for Ma The inference naturally drawn from such a condition of things is that these houses are short for customers who have property to deliver. The market to<day was a guess. Outside conditions con- tinue bearish and loe ntiment is meas- ured entirely by the pradominating opinion that may prevail at the moment as to what the alleged “cliques” may do next, Cables whre quiet. As previously remarked, wheat was rather weak at_the opening, but prices were run up ¢ o the buving by scalpers who were banking on the “natural reaction,” finding that the uiarket Lad no_other sup- port. They turned about and -’ May slipped ack toS2ig@s2ige and 80%;¢ for June, ‘I'he ere and buying sent May up again to S27(c and June to' Sle. Froin th voint th was a slight settling of values, when Walker ugain carried prices up to the outside limits previously reached, but just before the close a sharp decline occurred and final quotations were at inside figures real- ized, viz: M2hn@seije for May, ke for dune and e 1or July, a net 13s on the day of Y@te. Trading was lively the first hour aud the last fifteen minutes. Corn opened @'qe lower for future delivery, and during the first halt hour or so there was quite active trading. Throughout the re- wmainder ot the session the prevailing tone was one of dullness. ln the provision pit the week closed with a little more interest shown in the market. In pork there new trading, but lard and short ribs received increased attention and were at times quite active. Inshort ribs the movement in a speculative way was characterized with more than ordinary spirit, and under the uulc ing of holders lower prices provaded. For different deliveries the closings for thisarticle were 15¢ under last night's ngures, Lard also closed at a decline ot 2ige. The nominal quotations for pork were unchanged. CHIC. D LIVE 8TOCK. 1CIICAGO, April 2 pecial Telegram to the Bee.|-Carrie.—Beef cattle wers steady. Stockers and fecders were about the same as yesterday, or 30(@i5e lower than o ‘week ago. ‘Thegeneral market was slow and unsaitsfactory. Some choice cattle were sold to an,eastern buyer, butthe local de- mand was very light. Sales of shipping steers were made for 1,350 to 1,500 pounds at $4.80@h, 00 to 1, S350 The trade of the day was slow and values were weal but pricss on the whole were about the same as on other days of the week. lnferior to tair cows have sold as low as §15.00(@20.00, ‘with now and then a good to choice family cow at §35,00@45.00, Pretty good cows are often hard to see at £15.00450.00, however, eight car lots are nearly unsaiaeble except for CANDINE PUrposes, Hous—The small receipts of rough and mixed to-day was not surprising. ‘The de- mand was generally light and packers wera not doing much, but good to choice hogs were. ‘wanted at nsarly steady prices. I'ne inferior to fair kinds in ‘some cases slowly and in some cases H@loc lower. It would {mve been Impossible to clear the pens of common stock without a considerable reduction in prices. ‘The market for packing and shipping was were the real purchasers, but the impression obtains that Ives and Staynor bought the property for the syndieate headed by Meyer and Villard. Gould i3 probably not in it | Whether this has had anything to do with the decline in Western Union is not very clear. The Baltimore & Ohio has made ar- ranzements to exchange business with the French Cable company, thus increasing its facilities, The friends of Louisville & Nash- vill are great bulls on this property and say tisgood for a 10 point rise, It was reported that I’ P. Fower & Co, had purchased a ma- Jority of Chieago & E n 1llinois stock. 1t is understood that this purchase was made by W. W. Porter, president of the Chicago & Indiana Coal railway, and a syndicate of strong men. Itis believed that this pur- chase solves the problem the [ndiana Coal railway entrauce into Chicago and holders of this stock think that the pure will save that road 81,000,000, The total sale for to-day were 246,500 shure ~Govern bonds were AY'S QUOTATIONS, i (AR 007 C. & N, W UL S, s conpon. 1257 do nreferre 108, 43's coun N.Y. Commission brokers report an increase of outside orders anda disposition on the part of the unpro- fessional operators to become Interested in the market, Some of the leading traders Wwho have been left on the advance are talk- Ing bearish and say prices should have a re- action. The opening this morning was rather feverish at prices generally about the same as last night’s close. There was some moderate selling of St. Paul at the opening, thought to be for London accounts, and quite Jarge sclling during tho morning, but the stock held up pretty well In spite of it Mr, Jones stated that he and Mr. Ream were in New York on private business and that their presence had nothing to do with the advance #n stocks, A friend of Garrett's stated last evening that tie latter sizned an. asrecment e sali the Baltimore & Ohio property three weve tnum Me decti 10 say who | Corn—Steady ; No. 2, mixed, 598{@40c, +Oats—Fair demand; No, 2 mixed, 30 Rye. eady : No. 2, 61'4e.
