The war song concert to be giv the opera house next Tuesday evening, for the benefit of the Baptist church: promises not only to be a novel musical entertainment, but one of more than or- dinary nuerit. Prof. Hunter has charge of it. " The Misses Merkel, Mr. 'Lreynor, Mr. Pollack, Messrs. Badollet aud Tul- leys, Prof. Lipfert and others will partic pate. The concert thus presented by the est musical talent in the city will prove enjoyable indeed. Now that the republicans have shown their disposition to disregard party lines, and work to elect the best men for the city council, the democrats, not to be ontdone, will rally around such good men as the republicans have nominated. There are many democrats who think more of the city’s interests than they do of partisanship in city affairs, especially at this important period, and Chris Straub and George Motealf will receive their votes. It is an encouraging sign to see republicans and deinocrats enthu- siastic in getting the best men possible to serve in the council. —_—— “The best is the cheapest.” Quick Meal 1sthe best.”” Ergc Meal is both the best and ch ever offered to the public. convinced, at No. 41 Mamn - All orders from real estate brokers for job printing will receive immediate and careful attention at Pryor’s BEE job oftice. *“The the Quick pest stove o it and be street. al The new drug store of Camp & Elhs, in the opera house block, is to be opened this morning. Last evening the BEE man had the privilege of looking in upon it while the finishing touches were being put on, and by the brightness of the elec- tric light it appeared like a little palace. It is not saying too much to pronounce it the finest fitted drug store in the west. Mr. Bangs, ot Boston, an old druggist, who has of late years made a specialty of furnishings for stores in this line, and who has fitted up numerous ones in the east, gave this his personal attention, Every part is specially designea, and most nearly all covered by atents. The finishings and furnish- ngs are clegant, The shelvings, coun- ters, show cases, ete., are of solid cherry, ornamented with bronzes, and trimmed with dark-green mottled marble, It has a parquette floor, hard wood inlaid. Choice bits of statuary, mirrors, China silk drapings and various other orna- mentations are arranged with rare taste, making the store seem indeed palatial, The fountains for soda and minerals are elaborate and very rich, Every possible convenience 18 provided for the display and handling of druggists’ fancy sun- dries. It is the intention of these young men to confine their business to this line and prescriptions. They are both thor- O\I[‘Ply experienced and educated, and with their extended acquaintance and popularity cannot but find their new venture n great success. The new store is a great credit to Council Bluffs, and is one in which all can take pride. ————— Personal Paragraphs. Some of the home people, who have lived here for years, and have got accustomed to having prices so low, donot seem to be able to realize that these prices are ridiculous. Those who know what real estate is worth in any other city of this size laugh in their sleeve when some of these home people talk about the way property has advanced. I have been around a good deal myself, and I am satistied to stay by Council Blufls as the best point I know of Why just think of it, this city with 25,000 people, with eight or ten lines of railway terminating here, with big building improvements, with Omaha just on the other side of the river, with the assurance of this city being virtually made a partof it, and a hundred other advantages possessed by but few cities in the whole country, what can keep it from jumping right along?” sl eodn ctric door bells, burglar alarms and form of domestic electtical appli- ances at the New York Plumbing Co. pdi il Contractors and builders will find it to their interest to get prices on lime, cement, plaster, hair, etc., from Council Blufls Fuel Company, 539 Broadway. Richard Baker, better known as “Texas,” got jealous over his dusky bride, and in his anger he sought the flowing bowl, Then he went from drink to fight, and when the police sought to calm his rufiled feelings he turned on them. They turned the key on him, and yesterday he was fined enough to keep him in jail for a few days. D. B. Luke, one of Martin's hack drivers, was arrested yesterday for over- charging a Pnsscngnr. AScigarmaker, Orea Paslekel, from Davenport, was out with him taking in the town, Paslekel getting pretty full, It was claimed that the hack driver charged him $3 and took his wateh for security, depositing the timepiece with Bert Berdsley. The hack driver claimed that the passenger had broken one of the vanes of glass in the hack, and he charged him for this. Paslekel was fined for being drunk, and Luke’s case was continued until_to- day to make further investigation, It is claimed that Luke has been overcharg- ing others, and that as an instance he charged a lady #$1 for taking her from the opera house to Mr. Robinson’s on First avenue. Henry Sweigart, who is quite officious in having people arrested, complained of J. Carl, whose real name 'appears to be Milcheil, charging him with threatening to kill. Yesterday the complainant wanted to dismiss the case, but was in- formed that if he did so he must pay the cos'u. The matter will probably be drop- ped. . J. Roderick was before Judge Ayles worth yesterday omn & charge of larceny. It appears that Roderick and a wan named Lane were drinking around town together. Lane had a sack in which he had some provisions for his home. Get- ting separated, Roderick called at Fox & Galvin’s, where the sack had been left, and got it, as he claims, by La re- quest. He dropped into some other place to wait for Lane, got to playing cards, and finally Yickcd up the sack and went home withit. As there scems to be no disposition on Roderick’s part to steal the provisions, but rather a desire to accom. modate his friend, it is looked upon as a case of poor \unl went, and will probably be settled amicably. Jim Snodderly and his Mary, together with a woman named Mary Brown, were making night so hideous that the police run the trio in, They ure behind the bars sobering off. Description of the Slow Process as Scen in India—A Strange Scene, There is a movement on the part of the spectators shifting to windward, and a certain European who was sheltering from the sun behind a stone obalisque hard by is warned to get farther out of the way of the smoke, which a native, with a grin and a very significant femm' intimates to be trying to the olfactory nerves, says a writer on cremation in India 1n St. James’ Gazette. In the dry air and sultry weather the wood catches first. A thicker steam rises out of the coffin and mixes with the thin blue smoke. There have been smiles and laughter on the part of the company-— numbering hardly over half a dozen. both during the tacking-up proc and aff ard; but the laugh is not malicious; it can hardly be culled irreverent. It ia the laugh of men who know no harm in it. Meanwhile the fire grows hotter. With the dense steam rising out of the coflin there begin to be mixed tongues of flame. An attendant bales water in a small tin can out of the bucket placed nearthie altar, and sprink- les it freely trom time to time over the inside and’ outside of the burning box. After each baptism there is a dull black- ness within and an angry vapor rising out of what is there. And now. as the heat grows more intense, a charred foot rises above the edge of the coflin and slowly stretches itsclf up into the red flames. The knee-joint is unbending it- self as some unseen and smolderin muscle contracts. But now the sides an ends of the plank box cannot surely bold out mwuch longer, The fire looks fierce enough to melt an wron cage, and yet the wood only cracks and hisses, while there is an ugly splut- tering and gurgling nose inside. At last it bursts, but only graduvally. The empty end where the fect were gives way lirst; and then through the open chasm you can see the poor shriveled Jegs with only a remnant of black tlesh over the shin-bones, which point up- ward in different divections. The feet have still thejr natural shave, but they aro black and ghastly, blotched with a leprous, bubbly white. Then the ullmr end “falls out, and the skull hangs down inio the glowin embers, ouderfully human it is still, with the face cven now retaining much of its flesh and wlmost its complete feat- ures. It is strange to see the blackened countenance so oplmly looking down into the seething sea of fire bencath it and around it, ‘Rnu still it stares, though gradually becoming more ghastly and in- distinet.” Long ago most of the specta- tors have departed, tired of a useles waste of lime, Hardly one remains to ke the scattering bones together, which in two short hours from the time the fire W kindled will have been reduced t) |} kened cinders, weighing a few ounces only and scarcely recogaizable from the ashes of the burned sticks. et Sepbioae Irritation of the Throat ana Hoarse- ness immediately relieved by “Hrown’s Bronehiol Troches,” Price 25 cents, Sold only in bores, - ‘The 12th of May 1s the bly fixed for the sale of the ¥ irrevaca- neh crown L month before ilion de Flore. the pobular blood purifier, Hood's Sarsaparilla, is having a tremendous sale E ) rly everybody takesit.
