THE SUICIDE OF A SALESMAN Happy Gatherings of Young Folks— Amusements—Ell Perkins' Mise takes—Bits of Personali- ties and City Newa, The Rush For Lots, There never was a city more completely taken by storm thhn Council Blufls, The boom struck jt with all the force and sud- denness of a cyclone, but unlike the cy- clone there is more than wind, and that more is not ruin and deyastation. Council Bluffs has long had railway and other advantages far in excess of those pos- sed by most prosperous cities, Despite these advantages, and the fact that Omaha with all of its wonderful growth and bright future is just on the other side of the river, propert as been ridiculously low here and inactive. Ten days ago the boom struck the city, and such a scene of excitement as has been kept up since has seldom been equalled in any city ach day new capitalists have appeared with their pockets full of cash cager to snateh at bargains, day has seen some change of prospect for the better. Euch day has seen the sales swelling larger and larger. The news of the passage of the bill for the building of another wagon bridge has increased the excitement and steengthened confidence. People are comng in from all parts of the country, east und west, and deeds cannot be made out fast enough, Abstract men are w bemind with their work, real est ers are kept up and night, office of this sort is still crowded till mid- night. not be overdra v, The ¢ arpes men seem to ln as much rattled as the ¢ a pur § lobull.mk with you, I've lml my bearings. 1don’t know what to Another y property owner itve exprossed feelings, “I don't Know what it ns. Why couldn’t I speculate ns well as a man? I speedily found a very affable dealer, who had “Just what I wanted, a beautiful lot for $300, one-third down, and it would be surcly worth §100 more in less than a month.” [ went to he bank after $10to pay on the con- tract, to bind it until the papers could be madeé out. On returning to the real es- tate office and when I offered the money L was surprised to be told that the agent had made a mistake. It must be one-half down, instead of one-third. I was bound to speculate any way so 1 agreed to tius chance and the contract was made out. I went home to think of myself as a spee- ulator in land, and to decide what was the very leas price, 1 would take for my bargain, I wouldnt sell until the boor was at its height. I had just laid aside cloak, thinking of the genuine seal- skin that would soon take its place, out of the prolits of the deal, and how sur- prised my hushand would be, when a messenger boy rang the bell. He brought word from the agent that there was an- other hitch in the deal. The owner would not sign the deed. He wanted $325 for the lot, one-half cash. T put on m things, took another long walk through the cold and the storm, wishing I had the desired sealskin then, and lmfi frozen arrived at the real estate oflice only to be informed that a misunderstanding be- tween the owner and the agent had caused me to lose my bargam. I was naturally indignant, but the agent pleaded so _hard to be let off, and not censured. He said that life was hard enough with him at the best. One man had that morning threatened to sue him for $1,000. Another had threatened to pound him. He was beset by perplexi- ties, and now to have got a woman to scold him, it was too much. I took back my $10 and went home sadder but_wiser. The parting words of the agent still ring n my ears—*I'm sorry, for I know you have lost $100 by this.”” I have quit speculating, and given my spare _money to my husband to speculate with, he promising to give me a sealskin out of the profits.
