A Discourse By One Who Has Lived in Utah and Don'c Like Polygamy. Rev. Dwight Spencer, who has spent six years in Utah, defivered last evening in the Baptist church avery interesting discourse on Mormonism. He has evi- dently been aclose observer, a careful student of humanity, as well as of books, and he handled his subject clearly and strongly. He pictured Mormonism asan evil which could not be laughed out of existence, mnor would it die of its own unworthines It was strong and growing. He outlined some of its ments of strength, first of perfect organization, which ; plained in detail. The church high in rank in n, as |h<~" became the heads of large familics omen looked upon the men who married them as being their saviors; for unless marricd those women would be lost. Thus women were used and i ded most fearfully. The speaker named many instances of the de- moralizing effect of ‘poiygamy. The speaker spoke af the natnral loc: tion of the true west, its size and its evi- dent future, and then pictured the Mor- mon churell as having loeated in the very center of this wonderful wealth of nature, and stretehing its feeders outin every ction, fnlll[)ln;.{ itself and growing strong ly.
