He did not seem to have agreat deal of money, and explained it by saying that he had just arrived from San Francisco, that he had pure vavh through to New York city, whither he was going, but that on the road he had been robbed of his tickets and most of his mone He said he would tel ds east for money, V. He showed an answer stating that the money had been for- warded by mail, by check on the Mer- chants’ National bank of Omaha, with whom they did business. In a day or two the letter arrived, and he showed a check, No. 0614, dated September 9, pay- able to Ferdinand Kohel, on the above mnamed bank, signed John 8. Allison, treasurer. The man wanted Howorth to cash the check for him, as it was after banking hours, and he would like to settle his board aad lea s soon as possible. Howorth took the check and showed it to his friend Peter- son. ‘They concluded it was good, buu thought Howorth had better take it to n bank. They took it to Oflicer & Pusey's bank, but were informed that they could not eash it, ax the funds were locked up, but the bookkeeper said he would receive it for collection and gave him a receipt for the check, the receipt stuting that it was for collection. Howorth went back to the hotel and advanced the stranger the money. The rest of the story can be told in few words.
