Mr. McDowell, of the church of Latter Day Saints, gave a sermon Sunday night which would have aroused consid erable talk among the various other churches here, had the representative men of these other churches be: to have heard it. It w: mon, and some of the positions taken by him were very stalwart. As usual he spoke his mind trely, and in this particu- lar discourse he took occasion to make some strong claims for his church as compared with others. He took for his text: ‘‘If any man say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or the believe it not.” He described the various denominations, each claiming to have Christ, and yet every one of them denying more or less of the truths declared in the new testa- ent. They could not be right, for the test of those who loved Christ was if they kept ull the commandments given by him, These churehes taught different doctrines, ani the preachers were guided by the commentators of their particular chuaches, instead of by the word of God. ‘These churches which said, “Lo, here is Christ,” should not be believed. The church of the Latter Day Saints claimed to be the true church. It did claim that ‘“here was Christ, speaker then proceeded to give t ons for making this claim. He insisted that the organization of the church was just like the or iginal ehurch organized by wv, 4 NG Wore hine ofdais, Privsts, brophets, apostles, teachers, deacons, eto. In other churches many of ‘these orders were left out. Baptism by immersion was the original mode, and the other churches, at least most of lfu-m had departed from this, The teachings of his church Weré o those of the primutive fathérs, or rather like those of Christ. Every other chureh neglected some of these téachings and some of his commandments. He went into details to show that this posi- tion was sound. He urged his hearers to study the new testament, and see if the chureh of the Latter Day Saints did not stand the test. The speaker did not believe that he church of Christ was made up of all these denominations. If that was so, then if he wanted to be a_member of the church of Christ he would ve Lo go around and join all of these eral huu dred sects. It couldn’t be. 'l‘lu-ru no record of Christ mznnumfz reor- ganizing but one_church. There could be but one true church, and the others were false. As there could be but one true church of Christ, everyone should take the new test t and see what was necessary to bclunfi to such a church, and what were the characteristics by which the true church is to be known, Whon those tests were thus applied th speaker was certain that the verdiet wmust be, ‘Lo, (In :l is here. Not Qulln swm Nnouxh. George T. Swift was brought before Judge Aylesworth yesterday afternoon on the charge of having robbed Jucob Staub of a watch and chain and a railway ticket. The evideueo lor the prosecution oy was taken, and the case then con tinued until Wedunesday for the defense to make a showing. It secms thut Staub, who is a broewer. at Avoca, has been the eity for several days, and on Sunday night was taking in the town with Swift, who also lives at Avoea of money; but as pe used to work for Staub, and was well acquainted, Staub kept putting up for him. The two men wandered into the alley in the rear of Keating's store, and while there Staub lost his watch and ticket. He charged Swift with having tuken them, but the latter denied it, and claimed that Staub must have dropped the watch somew here Swift wanted him to go back into (he alley and hunt for it, and they did so. licn coming out onto Broadwiy again, Swift went one way wh Staub went to police _headguarters and _reported the theft. Wall Mc len and Staub started out to hunt Swift up, and saw him com ing down Bryant street on the east side, and McFadden arvrested him, Swift quickly passed the wateh to Staub, and evidently thought the matter would be dropped there, but in this he was mis taken, The police were set on having the matter shown up. Yesterday McFadden founda the missing reilwuy ticket, where it had evidently boen dropped through the grating at the eity lnuhlmu’, and the 15 that - Swift dropped it there as being taken to the station, It is understood that Swift will try to make the court believe that Staub dropped the vatch in the ailey, when they were in there together, and that while S(.mh was gone after an officer, he, Swift, hunted und and found the watch, and was on way to deliyer it up to police head- rters when arrested. The fivrding of lway ticket will be a httle more ult toaceount for but he wili probably m that Staub himself dropped it there \\hvu he was on his way to the station cor. ud to be a slick one.
