Charges Against the Cops. The police committee of the council spent most of Saturday in hearing testi- mony in the investigation of the charges against Officers Matza and McBride, who were accuzed of having unduly assaulted Fred Bullard m the Thirteenth street row last week. About twenty witnesses were examined. Mr, Kopp, who made the charges, stated that he only kbew of the case from hearsay. A laborer named Ku- bovee testified that the police force was no good at all. He had been knocked down bv a member of the torce once him- selfand fdidn’t think the city had anypo- lice force. The bottom of the charges al- most fell out of the charges whep Mike Nered, a member of the committee ap- pointed by Von Humboldt assembly K. of L. to investizate the case, took the wit- ness stand. He said Bullard had ed to him that he was not hurt much, but was only putting on and pretending to be sick from the c(fi'uls of the assault. He also stated that he kicked the policeman three times before the officer struck him. The officer’s case was confined to their own statements and the evidence of wit- nesses that Bullard was outside of his lace when the arrest was made and that le was resisting the officers when they struck him, The report of the committee will prob- ably be made to the council to-night.
