X140, houge of 11 THE SPECULATIVE MARKETS Hardly a Feature of Note in Any of the Prominent Commodities, CONFLICTING EXPORT REPORTS. ‘Wheat Sells Lower Throughout the Day—Only a Local Business Done in Provisions—Live Stock and General Reports. CHICAGO GRAIN MARKET. CrrcAco, Mareh 4. peclal Telegram, |— WugAT—In the privilege market yesterday afternoon the spread was very narrow, but the price was held within bounds without ap- parent difficulty. The amount on passage showed a slight inerease this week. The tone of the public eables was encouraging to in- vestors, but private cables were received vio- lently contradicting public market news and declaring in positiye terms that England was dull with a declining tendency. Conflicting reports were recelved of the operations of ex- porters at New York., They were sald to be buying and they were sald to be selling what they had already bought. Both sets of re- ports were on an _equality so far as the sur- face evidence of reliability could be deter- mined. May opened at843%c, a loss from yes- terday of Xc. It then advanced to Sif{e on reports of export purchases, and declined to 841g@S414c on the contradiction of these re- ports, subsequently hardening on liberal and steady purchases by commission houses and remaining quiet to firm to the end of the morning session, The close was at 84%c. Crop damage reports were quite numerous, especlally from Ohio and Michigan, and to this is due some of the later strength that was developed. Conry—The only feature of note in corn to- day was the seliing of 250,000 bushels of May by Ream. 'The disposition to sell was decided, but the market eld steady. OATs—Oats were unruffied by excitement or large trading. ProvisioNs—The agitation in the provi- slon pit was not so great to-day, and the mar- ket ruled comparatively steady. Pork opened 5e under yesterday, first trades in May being on a basis of $10.25, The price dropped off a fraction, advanced to $10.85, receding subse- quently to $10.173¢, and then advanced once to 810,85 and closing at 1o'clock at {. Lard was not materially affected ctuation in the other product. The volume of trading was not large, and scemed to be mainly local. The vicious drive at pork by some traders did not terminate with g profit to them. AFTERNOON BoAnrp—The afternoon mar- kets were very dull. Wheat was a shade lower, and pork rather stronger, the shorts runnine to cover in considerable numbers, No change of importance in the other com- modities. :40 p. m.—Puts on May wheat, 841{@S43c; calls, 843{c. Chandler, Brown & Co.'s Report. The following report of Chicago’s specula- tive markets is furnished the B by W. P. Omaha representative of Chandler- Brown Co., of Chicago and Milwaukee: Dead, lifeless markets the whole day. Traders on board played tagand swapped lies with each other to kill time. Wheat for May moved in a limit of e, opening at8iige and, with but little change all day, closed on theevening call at Stige, precisely the opening point. One load was taken forex- port, and four more reported. Each time this market moves it scttles back into lower limits. W believe it to be asalo still, and shall think so, until something new oceurs. Corn and oats have lost what little life the did possess, but they lold their own, Pork on opening was very weak and fell off to 810.17¢ for May, but firmed up and closed at $10.321 per barrel, or 2¢e above yesterday’s close. Thursday Evening, March 4, ‘The market In general was fairly active to- day, 'T'he heavy stormand impending block- ado served to strengthen values to a certain extent and to lead the packers to anticipate their wants. Nearly everything was sold, and the present pnn?.w'u would seem 1o in- dicate that there will be nothing in to-mor- row. The receipts of hogs to-day were heavier than yesterday, but there e not 80 man cattle. The roceipts compared with & weel ago show a deerease of 1,500 hogs. Values are about the same in the cattle mar- ket, there being no change worthy of note. There was no cholce heavy cattle on the mar- | ket, and the sales consisted for the most part of butchers' stock. Choice fat cows aré in good demand, but the buyers are_very reluc- h light “stuff.
