Parts of the anclent burial ground of the Castls famlly still remaln, and one marbls slab, lvy mantled and blackened by time and the elements, has this corlous inecription: ‘Under this tomb lies ye body of YE HONORABLE JOHN CURTIS, Eeq., Of the city of Willismsburg and Parish of ‘Benton, Formerly of Hungus Parish, On the Eastern Shore of Virginia and County of Northampton, the placa of his nativity, Aged 71 years, and yet lived but 7 years, Which was the spaca of time he kept Bache- lors’ House, at Arlington, on the Fastern Shore of Virginia, The paradox which concludes this in- scrlption s variously explained, but tra- dition says that the poor fellow marrled a vixen who led him a sad dance through life. He had epent seven years with none but hls servants at Arlington, a careless bachelor, happy to ride across the country and keep Iate hours with the young bucks of the day overa bottle of rum and the solaclng Influence of a pipe and tobacco. When he finally became a beneilct he lost his liberty and counted himself dead from that day. A half score of miles below Accomac Court House, on the bend of an ill-kept driven back the most magnificent expe- dition ever sent agalnst the country. So- olety had tendered the general a grand receptlon. New Orleans was at that time soclally the most elegant clty in America, and the ladles were upon that ocoaslon decked out in the most splendid of costumes, many of them just from Parls. Presently entered the hero of the hour, Jackson—tall, commanding, as graceful and dignified as 8 French embas- sador; for no man of his time had a grander alr than Old Hickory. Upon hir arm was Mrs, Jackson, fresh from the back- woods of Tennessee—short, fat, with no walat, fat, chubby hands, and a red, fat, good-natured, but, by no means, refined face. And yet Andrew Jackson thought that she was the finest woman in all that assemblage. One beauty, indeed, this homely wife of Jackeon retained. She still had the bright black eyes of Rachel Donaldson, but the derk swarthy skin aleo remalned, and added nothing to her personal appearance. Bat If Rachel Donaldson had lost her vanity and sometimes smoked a clay pipe with the general, she was none the lees a good and wise womsn, and exerclsed a calutary Influsnce upon the hot-headed and sometimes plg-headed man who never founp an obstacle in hls path which he did not remove. Mra. Lieut. Baldwin's letters after a tlme began to arrlve fitfally. Thls was sccouated for at first on the suppotition by Mrs, Bald- win that her husband was so much Inter- ested In and engaged with his new charge that he did not find time to write a8 frequently as before. After about a year, however, the letters atopped com- ing altogether. Mre. Bildwin wrote frequently as before, but her lettors re- mained unanswered, Commuuications sent afterward by her counsel shared the eamo fate untll a foew months ego, when shoe recelved a letter from her husband declaring that he had made new aillances and did not contemplate a retura to the United States. The lotter was corrob. orative of ramors respeotlng Lieut. Baldwin that had reached home through the medfum of naval officers re- tarning from the east. The new alliances referred to mean an_attachment between the former naval officer and a Japanese woman of rank whom he mst some months after he had taken charge of the bydrographioschool. The woman, Mrs. Baldwin's counsel understands, is regard- ed as fent. Baldwin's wife. The specific allegation in the libel, however, is will- fal desertion for more than two years, a sufficlent reason for divorce under the laws of thls state. It is not known of cit'zin followers, repsating his call; and the maes of this crowd gaily obayed. Threo cheers for the mayor were glven, and the Improvised posse, led by the msyor and sheriff, ran on In pursult of thelr game. Only one who has seen an American strect crowd In a moment of popular excltement, can understand the jolly and careless courage that prevailed 10 this band, or their total lack of sense of what the whole thiog meant. Ua- daunted, the msyor rode up and volced the msjesty of the law by ordering the equatters to lsy down thelr arms and to give themselves up as prisoners, The olt- izen army cheerfally crowded about Bigelow and ia front of the armed rioters, carlous to watch the outcome, anxlous, it would ssem, to enjoy a joke, incredu- lous of any danger from the famillar boasters.
