THE RAIN'S RETURN. Al Elemental Natore Frowns Again on the Fair, Rain, Mud and Slush Once More—A Blue Day at the Grounde— Racing the Oolts Through Mire— Future Plans, The olty at night-fall Thursday, was filled with people, the skles were clear and a starlight night set In, Cheered by the succers of the day just past and the promiee of great businees for the follow- ing, the falr management would have re- fused $10,000for yeaterday’sgate receipt At three o'clock In the morning, how- ever, the aspect of affalrs assumed anotheroast and from the great clonds which rolled up from the southeast a heavy raln began to pour, All forenoon a drizzling shower attended by a raw, chill wind pre- valled adding to _the dlsmal complexion of everything. No visitors were on the grounds and a forsaken alr brocded over all. Water, mud and slush held high control and the few who were about, pad- dled around In the mire in the most aim- less and dejected manner. The board of directors held sosslon at noon and reached very vague concluslons, 1t was declded that the remainlng heat: of the four-year-old trottlng, postponed on acoount of darkness from Thuraday, must be run, The remalnder of the board’s enactments were all provis- {onary. It was also determined that the fall raclng programme would be carried out In spite of all ob- stacles and the flight of tlme. The fale will doubtless be carrled over Into next week, and In that event 1t is underatood that the Phyllis-Joe Davis race will occur Taesday. No falr will, under any clr- cumstances, be held Sunday, and no races made. It would cost the Omaha assoclation its membership In the Natlon- al Trotting Congress to thus violate, at once, its rules and the Sabbath. THE DOARD'S ACTION. The colt race belug trotted and won by Consul In three stralght heats, the board went about among the horsemen and at last reached concluslons. It was deter- mined that the remalning features of the falr should be concentrated Into to-day, and the show closed. In a following sectlon the schedule of the races will ap- pear. Prof, Hunt yesterday sought to bo released from his engagement and losve last night, but the mansgers pre- valled upon kim to remaln over and his third ascension fs made at 1 o'clock to- day. TODAY'S RACES, The following races, embracing the fres.for-all snd the Phyllie-Joe Davis race, the greatest atractions of the cn- tre progremme, will come off today: 2:33 Claes, Trotting—Parse, $500; di- vided, $300 to first; $150 to second; §50 to third, A. Rowell, Resumptlon, Bellek, Low Clark. NOTES, Peter Hopley & Co., of Lewls, O county, Iows, took the sweepatakes, $25, for the best Clydesdale horse on the grounds, The winning horse s a stallion, seventeen hands in hd%ht and wel ghlng 1,925 pounds. He ls recent importa- tlen, having been landed in this country bat two weeks ago. The total expenses of the association for the falr will reach $20,000. About $10,000 has already been recelpted, and with falr weather a safe balance can be made before the close. Three of the 100 crazy quilts in the competition for the phaeton have been selected as the best. The committeemen will on Saturdsy night shave their heads and draw straws for the best of the s lected thr: ERail Notes, The Union Pacific will contlnue to run 1ts speclal tralns to the falr grounds to- day. H. C, Eckenberger, general agent of he Chicago & Northwestern at Portland, Oregon, 1s In the city. A, W. Adams, cf Chlcago, asslstant geceral passenger agent of the Pitte- barg, Fort Wayne & Chicago railroad, s in tho city. George O'Nelll, engineer on the 137, made a fast run from Omsha to Pacific Junction Wednesday with twenty-two cars of stock, Tn splte of the bad tracks alorg the route, over which great care must be exerclsed while repalrs are being wade, he reglstered Into Pacific Junction just 55 minutes after ho registered out of Omaha making two or three stops en- route. The followlng special from Fort Scott, Kan., of Ssptember 9, bears upon the e JBBMJ Kansas, Nebraska & Dakota s “This evening Major A. A. Harrls, of this city, in compary with a number of ospltalists from Peunsylvanls, Interested in the bullding of the Kani Nebraska & Dakots rallroad, from Fort Soott, via Topeka, Lincoln, Neb., and the Northern Paclfic, arrlved In this olty co-night, and to-morrow it ls expected thatour oftizans will l::sd- to the proposition to bs made Bueh and party, which will gusr ;:m the commencement of the road this Tne Siteation at Rouvk Springs, The Chinawen were to go to work yes- terdsy at Rock Springe, and as no re- porls to the contrary were received, either at the Union Pacifio cr army head- «quarters, it is supposed no trouble arose. The followlng letter bas been received from a corresponden’ at Rawlina, Wyo. 1t will e found to contaln some very In- teres!ing facts: RAwLINg, September 8, 1885, To the Editor of The Bee. Daar Sie—1 notice in your report on the Rock Springs tiot several misstatoments. The correspondent who sent to the newspapers the telegraphic report is in the employ of the U, P. company, and gives only thelr side of the case, Une roason why the B, & Q. company prefer to employ Chinamen is this—they charge them twice as much for powder, flour, hame, water, houso rent, ete., than is the reg- ular price, and white men would not baim- porellon 1o shat Way, Fastbermors, when Chinaman buys goods at any other store than that eontrnumfhy the contractors, and they hear of it, he is also charged with it on their books, 1In this any citizen of Rock Springs will bear mo out. ~Then again the statement is made that minecs earn 3 a day, but the writer forgets to mention that they only work three or four dnyunweai and the ma- jority do not !v!r*! more than 850 a month the year round. That mining the very hardest of work, no one will deny, The coal miners in Rock Springs are English, Swedes and Scotch, and by the votes cast last spring more than four-filths are citizens of tho United States. The ementa of the Union Pacific offi clals are a tiesue of falsehoods, The people of Wyoming do not justify the killing of these people, yet they all think that the end justi- fies the means, The univeraal opinion is that the contractors should have been made t. suffer instead of the Chinamen, Unless those bad men are checked in the evil of oppreasion it will inevitably lead to the pauperization and hopeless degradation of our toiliog masses. As your colamos have always been open to both sides of a question I hops you will insert thi Sued on the Bond, Milon Lindssy filed a suit fa the dls- trlct court yerterday agalnst W. T, Horn, Brad Slaughter and John Ruseell, dlrec- tora of the Central Land & Improvement on an injunctlon bond, The history of the case Is somewhat Interesting. In Ostober, 1884, the dircctors of the Central Land & Improvement company filed an application In the Nance county dlatrict court for an order of Injunction agalnst Lindsay who was secretary and treasurer of the company. The accom- panying petition set forth all sorts of oharges against Mr. Lindssy, that he had been guilty of mismanagement cf the fands of the company, had converted them to his own use by speculating, ete,, had sold property to the company which it did not want, and had In varlous ways abueed the truats of his position. The petition- ers set forth further that Lindsay was in- debted to the company and asked for a restraining order to prevent him from using any funds in benk belonging to bimself or to the company, uatll the clalm of the company could be passed upon by some competent authorlty, The restraining order wes lssued, with a clause temporarlly preventing Mr. Lindsay from scting as the secretary of the compsny. Oa November 3d Judge Post, of Nance county, heard the case and dissolved the injanction or restraining order, thus vin- dicating Mr. Lindsay. Thls gentleman now proposes to sue Messra. Horn, Slaughter aod Rusell for the Indemnity bond of §500 which they gave at the time the first reatraining order was granted, ——— District Court Decisions, In the cases of Robert Martin va, the Union Pacific railrcad company, and Ohristlan F. Harmann vs, same, an order of removal to the United States circuit court was granted by Judge Neville, In the case of Madlson Canningham, s minor, vs Ellzabeth Lybrook et al., . W. Keysor was appointed guardian for the plaint!ff, and accepted the same. In the case of Mat F. Patrick vs. the Omaha horse railway company, Judge Neville ordered that the defendant be required to file a more full and specific answer by this morning. On motlon of the plaintiff, the case of Edward Metsscuff vs, John T. Paulsen was dismlssed. In the case of John Hollenbeck ve. Harvey Link, the defendant was allowed to file an answer within ten days. Skipped With the Cash. A young man named Orin M. Pickard came up to the police court yesterdayand swore out a complalnt egalnst one Chas, Don, for larceny. He sald that he had been driving a wagon to and from the falr yosterday and had engaged Don as a condactor to take In the cash. Towards night, the conductor, who was not blessed s|With an unusual amount of honesty, skipped out, king with him about §9 {n money, nearly the entire re- celpts of the day. The warrant has been issaed and placed In an officer’s hands for service. e ——— A Sharp Game, One of the sharpest tricks on record is that which enrlohed the pockets of a cer- tain gang of sharpers, as related at police headquarters yestorda; These men would board a carryall golng out to or coming in from the falr and would col- lect the passengera’ fares while the Intent on the work of forclng his team through the maze of vehlcles on Sixteenth street. After collecting all the fares on one conveyance, another one would be boarded and the operation repested, The sct In all cases escaped detection, and no arrests have been made, o —— Army No Col, Hall, Inspector of posts, returned yesterday from a ten days’ eastern trip, Advlces recolved at army headquarters yesterday are to the effect that In the competition at ¥ort Snelllog just com- pleted, for places on the divislon team of 12, between teams of 12 from depart- ments of Texas, Mlssourl, Platte and Dakots, the department of Dakota got slx men on the team, department of the Platte two (Wecks and Pendersen), other departments not yet having been heard from, e — A Neighborly Quarrel, Mrs. Klusa, who atta'nsd some noto- rlety a fow months age, ss belng accused of the murder of her husband, John Klaea, appeared before Judge Stenberg yesterdsy and awore out a complaint sgelost Kato Ohristlan for assault battery.
