Thomae, commodore of the New York Yacht clab, whose body was placed In Trinlty churchyard, New York, which is looated on Broadway at the head of Wall street. This shows that scme of the learned men and physiclans of Council Blofts are In error In suppoeiog that burying in the clty of New York has been prohibited. The RKesidence of James Ronning Burned to the Ground, About 1 o’clock yesterday an alarm of fire was caused by the burning of the residence of James Ronning, No. 459 Glen avenue, near the great reservoir of the water works, The fire department conld do little to put down the flames, however, as there was some unfortunate break or stoppage in the fire-pressure of the water supply, the first occurrence of this kind which has yet marked the his- tory of the company. The building was burned to the ground. It was a twc- story frame, and cost about $1,400, It was insured tor $400 in the Council Bluffs Inturance company. The cauge of the firo Is unknown, The first known of It was by the awakening of a young man named Sorenson, who was slecping in the houte, and who finding the room filled with rmoke, roused Mr. Ronning, the rest of tho family being In Codar Rapids, visiting friends there. The two men got out of the house with difficulty. The resldencs of Mr, Mayne, about forty feet dlstant, had also a nar- row escape from being destroyed, and had 1t not been for the raln that was ng, would have at least been badly acorched. The fallure of the water supply eesma not to be due to any neglect or defect of the water worke, but to one of those un- fortunate comblination of clrcumstances for which no one Is to be blamed, and which could hardly have been foreseen and prevented, One of the large wvalves at the river is out of order, and another was ordered by telegraph to be sent from the east by express, but had not arrived. The defective one was belng made to answer the present purposes, but could not be worked #o quickly as If it had been in good order. Captaln Hathaway, not knowing this, shut off the fire pro- tection at the city bullding, as ususl in case of fire, and after waltlng for the water works, and finding that the pressure did not come with usual promptness, opened it agaln, thinking that if this was not done, there would neither be fire pressure or reservoir pres- sure, and that by opening it the reser- volr pressure would be glven anywa; The opening, however, prevented t{a en- glnes from getting on the fire pressure, all thelr pumplng being slmply to throw water Into the reservoir. The reeervolr pressure was of Itself not sufficient at that location, the nearest hydrant being elght hundred feet or more away, and the frictlon overcoming the preesure. This s the first time when any such break has ocourred sluce the establishment of the water works, but had it not happened, it Is doubtful whether there would have boen any difference In the result, as the bullding was wrapped In flames when the fire was dlecovered, one theory belng that it was struck by lightning, e —— Next Sunday, August 23, the saloon hs&eu are to give a plenlc at the parl on Graham avenue, Extentive pre, tlons are being made, and good musio and other needfals for a good time will be provided. A sldewalk was ordered on Washington avenue, from Benton to Hartlson atreets, Property owners on Eighth and Niath etreets were ordered to fill up the aide. walizs to grade within thirty daye. A resolution was adopted accepting the bid of 8. P. Folsom, on paving, for all the streets advertised except North Sec- ond street from Wnamngtos avenue to Fletcher avenue, the coundil reserving the right to designate what portion and when the work should be done by the contractor, Alderman Straub was Instructed to In- tervlew property owners on Maln and Bancroft streets In regard to paving of alleys In the rear of their premists, with wooden blocks instead of stone, if the contractors would release the city from the contract. The city attorney was instructed to prepare a modification of the ordinance in regard to street stands. The council then adjourned until next Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock, A GIANT LIFT. A Threc-Story Brick Building, One Hundred Feet Equare, Raised Six Feet from Its Founda- tione, and Not & Orack, The largest brick bullding ever raised in this part of the west has been success- fully lifted six feet in the air without a crack or a break, This heavy bit of work 18 none other than St, Francis scademy, located at the corner of Seventh street and Fifth avenue, and the herculean tzsk was performed by Mr. W. P. Ayls. worth, of this clty, who has already done some remarkably skillful work 1n that line, but who has now covered himself all over with glory, The building isa mammoth one to be thus ralsed, it being three storles high, and bhaving a frontage on Fifth avenue of 100 feet. while Its frontage on Seventh street is only four feet less, The filling of the streets made it neces- sary that thisgreat pile of brick should be ralsed aix feet—by no means an easy task, and its progress has been watched esgerly and anxlously, One of the diffi- calties was the fact that the academy had been bullt in three sections, the brick walls not jolning into each other, though clorely united. It was ralsed as a whole, however, and so ekillfully -has the work been done that even where the different parts of the buliding csma together, there is not a crack, while one locks in valn over the plasterlng, ceillngs and walls for the slightest evidence that this great structure has been thus lifted slx feet from its original foundatlon, To thos raise such s building, tlmbers without number, and 560 jacks were re: qulred, and under the tower especlally theee jicks were placed so closely as to hardly leave rorm for another one. It is needless to enlarge upcn the skill re- quired to bave all thess timbers adjusted perfectly, and each of this army of screws Xk |turned with a nleety and uniformity - | which. would result in’ the quiet, steady lifthng of thls mass of brick and mortar, &0, that there should not be a jar, or the least orack of even the fraglle plastering. That Mr. Aylsworth] has ‘accomplished this s sofficient proof of h's being an artist in his line, There | L to the bullding, 22x5606 foet, closely joined to it, but still a sep- arate bullding, This has been threo feet above the msin bullding, but now its floora are three feet below. The change has been made without hardly any Ind!- catlons of it, the buildings belue still close together, It s probable that this L will also be ralsed, later in the season, and then St, Francls academy will be ss model an establishment In the educa- tlonal lue as can be found in any city.
