Every time that I make an ascen- clon I learn something that Ididn’t know before with regard to the matter. A dif- fioult thing to learn is to ll the balloon properly, as well as how to adjust the rope correctly. Anotner part of the operation which requires judgment is the throwlng out of ballast, In changing the balloon from one current of alr to another. No, there s no such thing as gulding a bal. loon—you have got to let It drifi where it will. Of course, by throwing out sand you can lighten the balloon and send the balloon from one stratam of alr to an- other.” *‘What do balloons coat!” *‘You can get a good balloon for $300. The best ones, I think, are made In St. Louls, There /s an erroneous Impres slon that the finest and moat costly bal loons are made of allk. I have noticed a great many people examine my balloon and then go awsy and talk obout {t's be- ing made of sllk. The fact of the mat. ter Is that the materlal 1s not slik at all, but the finest kind of canvas very closely woven. What kind of gasdo we usel Well, it don’t make much difference, so it is pure. Good hydrogen gas made out of hard coal Is very gocd, and the ga made out of z'nc and chemlcals dissolved in water will also anweer the purpore. The great essentisl in filling a balloon 1s that the gas fhall ba pure.” **How far can a balloonist navigate on one trip?” “Well, that depends upon all condi- tlons, Thres or four hundred miles is a good trlp. One of the longest on record, 1 belleve, Is that of Prof. Wise, who traversed the distance between St. Louls and Columbas, some 700 miles, at vne voysge.” The great danger of a balloon voy- sge,” continued Prof. Hunt, is in alight. Ing. When a balloon oncs commences to go down in gocd earnest, there /s no stopping her. Occasionally the balloon- ist drops into some grest lake, and is obliged to float a_ day or two before belng retcaed. I remember one of my voyages that was enidenly terminated by the fall ¢f my balloon into Lake Erle, I floated for sixteen hours before I was picked up by a pasing boat. I wss passed by a number of steamers In the night—some of them a0 near me that I could distinctly hear the operation of their machinery—but T could not shout lond enough to~ make myeelf heard. “One of the most dangerous places In America to land In, is the swamp Jand tarrltory of Michigan, where Prof. Wise and Prof. Dopaldson perished. Here the balloon generally becomes stuck fast In some tree, while the voyager is compelled to climb to the ground. He finds that the swamps are covered with water from two to five fest deep, all the way through. He can see no way out, does not know in which dl- reclion to turn, and becomes hopelessly entangled In the growth of trees and bushes. If he doesn’t die of fatigue and hunger, he is certain to be literally eaten up by the moeqaltoer You see 1t is Im- possible to travel faster than two or three miles a day through thete swamp lands. Another peril which attenda the man who aspires to navigate the alr ara the telegraph wires which are encountered In large cities. When a balloon passes swlftly through a net- work of these, it is liable to be cut all to pleces, while the balloonist is lucky if he isn't instantly killed, There is one poor fellow now selling peanuts in Fox: Wayne, Ind.,, who had twoarms and a leg cut off by telegraph wires, on the very first ascension he made. “I could go on and tell you more of the dangers of a bal loonist’s life, but 1 am afraid I have told you enough already to pravent your ever dealring to become a member of the crafe.” e —— Moure Burglaries, Barglars entered Colonel Henry’s resi- dence Monday nlght, They went in by the kitchen window, which was open, pried open the bick hall door, thence into the cellar and out. They put Colonel Hen- ry’s boots outside, where they were found this morning, and took from the house only a box of honey-—leaving some beer and wine untouched in the collar. They must have been old soldiers, and thelr consideratlon s appreciated this tire. Later the thleves attempted to enter Byron Reed’s office but fatled. Thieves slso eutertd the residence of ar. F. D.
