Ten years sgo when they celobrated their golden wedding thoy had slxty-two children, grand chil. dren and great grand children who were at that tlmoe living In the state of Nebras ka, They have now elghty of thele off spring living. Thelr children living are Hon. Urlah Brunner, of West Polnt; J. J. Brunner, of Oakdale; Prof. J. B. Brunner, county superintendent of pub- lic Instruction of Douglas county; C. E Branner, superintendent of mall carriers in the Omshs postoffice; Hon. T. C. Braoner, of Omaha; Mrs. Chas. U. Mohr, Mrs. J. E. Riley, of Schayler, and Mra, Capt. Jacob Swartz - lander, of Omaha, all in Nebraska, One of the rematkablo things 1s that Lillle Monroe, age nine yesrs, {s living under the same roof with her mother, grand- mother and great grandmother. Mr. Branner has always been a staunch demo- crat and cas' hlis first vote for Andrew Jackson in 1824, His sons are all repub- licans, and showed great patriotism, four of them having been In the army at one time during the war of the rebelllon, o — ‘Western Confidenca Men. “The good oltlzens of Valentine,’ sald a gentleman just returned fron the western country, to a reporter yesterday, ‘‘are just at present bothercd with a large number of confidence men, Thisnuisancs is of recint origin, Inssmuch as when Valentine was the headquarters of the cowboys, no “‘con” man dared to operate in the town, Now that Chadron has de- veloped and has boen made a sort of centre for all the cowboys of that section of the western counatry, the confi- dence men are flocking into Valentine. Last week 1 was tnere, and heard of two very neat tricks belng turned. In one instance two of the confidence fraternity found a ‘‘sucker” the country and indoced him to enter a dive with them, There they told him that they were traveling salesmen for & large jowelry house, and wanted to sell out thelr samples, The greeny immedi- ately offered to purchase, and produced a large roll of money—§800— and lald {t on the table. One of the men immediately grabbed $400 of the money and ran out of the house. The rustic was very much excited and wanted togive chace at once. He was pravented from dolng 80, however, by the othor con man who professed to feel very indlgnant over the action of his comrade and sald that he would get tho sberiff to coma and In- vestigate the matter, He returned soon after with a third ‘‘con” man who repre- sonted the sheriff. This man put a long- string of questions to the swindled man, and the conscquencs was that by the time a genulne alarm was given the “‘con” man and his roll of stolen money were beyond recovery. Another granger who waa taken Into one of these dives by a party of crooks, had alarge roll of money snatched from him, Ho showed fight, saying that no man should leave the room with his money, and commenced to belabor the crooks over the head with anything he csuld lay his hands on. Finally, one man dropped down and feigned death. His comrades Immedfately informed the sucker that he had commltted murder, snd was liable to be arrested at once by the sherlff, They worked upon hls feelings so that he fin- ally made up his mind to flce. He left town at once, under the Impression that he was’ s murderer, and before he dls- covered that he had been swindled, the crooks had made good thelr escape.” — —— Convict Labor, At a meeting of the joint commlttees of the bricklayers, stoneoutters and plasterers, held on Friday evenlng, a speclal committeo was appointed to draft resolutions on the matter of convict labor, The committee has completed its work, and tho followlng resolution was adopted as definlng the posltion of the varlous assemblles interested on the polnt: Resolved, That we, the bricklayers, stone cutters and plosterers, knowing the injurious effects of convics lsbor when brought in com. petition with honest labor, do hereby declaro that we will not do any work on any bullding whero convicts labor or material of any kind produced by convicts is being used, Committee: A.
