Mondav Morning, August 17. ~ LOCAL BREVITIES, A lot of bedelothes and a set of harness awnit an owner at the city jsil. ~Positive arrangements have been made for a series of three games between the Union Pacifics and the St, Joseph team for next Satarday and Sanday the 22ad and 234, —Judge McOulloch, of the county court, appointed Geores H, Guy as member of the board to award damages to property owners along the Omaha Belt line in place of Charles Dewey. ~Mrs. Willis Johnson, of Franklin, I'rank- lin county, Neb,, writes to Mra, Pugsby, of the Woman's Christian Aid assoclstion desir ing to adopt & homeloss, friendless girl into her family, —~In a gamo of base ball plaged on the B, & M. grounds yesterday afternoon, the Monitors of West Omaha defeated the Park avenue nine by a score of 24 to (Gireen, of the Park Avenues, made a fine left-handed catch, The Monitors play the Shamrocks of South Omaha next Sunda e — No Pennies, iIf You Pleaso, To the Editor of the Br, In the Omaha Herald of a recent date 1 find the followlng: *‘The banks aro beginning to pa; pennirs, Morse, Falconer, Willlams and other merchants are giving them In change, and the publishers of the World have sent east for 25,000 pennles to for- nish newsboys for change. The small soon become quits familiar In So we ara to have a flood of pennies. Just think of thls, west of the Missouri ! I objzct to the whole business, and so do o great msjority of the dealers in Omsaha, unless I aw very much mistaken. When Smith came to Omaha with his gambling scheme of selling dry goodsbelow cost he brought with him a catch-penny device which he forced upon his compotitors, He sold goods at odd fignres—99, 87, 27, 19 cents, snd so on—ao as to lntro- duco the penny system of change As a matter of fact the majority who bought at Smith’s or anywhere olse where pennies were belng used did not walt to get thelr pennice. The penny syatem will prove a nuisance. It never can be- come popular In Omaha or sny other city west of the Missouri, This section of the country is not glven to pleayune mothods, Soms three or four years ogo pennies wero introduced in St. Louls, bat it fallod there, sn1 the nickel is the smallest coin that circulates in that city now, atd it cught to be the smallest in Owmaha, Is Is hardly worth while for c'erks to stand bzhind the counter to sell & osnt’s worth of candy, shcestrings, ne.dles, etc. The barkeepers do not care ta sell three cents worth of beer, or ssven cents worth of whisky, and four cents worth ot lemonade. When a customer buys a nickle's worth of goods he gsts value received. The nickle as the lowest piece of change does not there cause any hardship upon the poor. Very few business men, if any, cara to monkey with penniee, and the peony system ought to be discounte- nanced, The proprletors of the World, who pre- peso to flood this market with pennles, have raised the price of their prospective paper from two to three cents, This re- minds me of an attempt made in the early days to force three cent pleces upon the people of Omaha. At that time three-cent pleces passed ourrent for five cents In making change. Dr. Mo- nell. who was engaged In the banking business, sent east for five kegs of these coins, and trled to glut the market with them at five cents esch, The retallers got together and agreed that they would demand that two three-cent pleces should pssa for five cents, The enterprising banker had no more use for his three- cent colns, and he accordingly sent them back east. If our retall dealers will now show as much spunk In regard to pen- nies, they will put an end to the nulsanca at the very start. I hope Omaha has not been reduced to the level of Chinatown. Yours truly, NlcHoras NICKLEBY. e ——— For Trade.—Nance county lands for stock of general merchandise or hard- ware, Address John Linderholm, Oen- tral Olty, Neb. - ——— Opening of the Amusement Season, The season at Boyd's opera houso opens on the 24th with ‘‘The Devil's Auction,” to ba followed by *Zs-mo-ra,” These two fine spectacular pieces will tako up the whols week., In the line of opera wa shall have, durlng the season, Emma Abbott, the Thompson company, and tho Boston Ideals; in drama: Bar- rott, Modjesks, Koene, Salvini, Mary Anderson, Robson and Crane, Fannie Davenport and Rhes; In comedy: Nat Goodwin, Joe Murphy, John T. How Mrs, Hedrick Has Fallen Helr- €8s to aFortune~Her Story, Some slight mentlon was made In the Bee Saturday of the case of a woman name unknown, who came from the esst many years sgo, with a husband, the marrlage to whom was opposed by her parents, and who afterward married a second husband from whow she has sluce been divorced. The fact was also mentioned that Jthls woman now In Indigent circumstanoes, has just received notice from her frlendsin the esst that her father had dled leaving her heiress to a large fortune. Belleving that this woman was still In Omaha, a raporter for Bee started out with a fow scant point- ers, determined to_ wmolve the mystery. He finally succecded In finding the woman, and galned from her and from her frlends the story of a life whioh is certaloly replete with everything of the strange and sorrowful, The womau Is now In Omaha liviog In a small houee on the southeast corner of Seventeenth and Davenport stréete, and her name s Mrs. Matilda Hedrlok, Many years ago, when a young glrl, she marrled a man named John Briley In Pennsylvanla, Her parents were well- to-do and for some reason opposed the match, The young girl, however, came west with her husband, determined to help him make a home. They sottled in the state of Iowa, and lived there for many years accamulatiog something of a fortune, baving among other posseeslons a good farm, Two children were born to them, Lydla and Leonard, Nine or ten years ago, Mr, Briley dled. A year or s atterwards she married a John Hedrlck, securlng, ss developments afterward showed, a worthless adventurer for a hus- band. He proved to be a drunken sot, and cruel ia the extreme. Mrs, Hedrick and her husband, two years ago, moved to Nebrasks. In June 1884, Mrs Hedrick made up her mind to stand her husband’s abuee no longer and filled a petition for divorce in December of the tame year. Hedrick contested bitterly the porsersion of a little aix yesr old child, which was finally turned over by Judge Wakely inte the care of the mother. About this tlme, Mrs. Hedrlck was In clrcumstances of the moet poverty strlcken character. She happened to learn, however, that her boy, Lzonard Brlley, was In the Unlted States army, statloned at Fort Omaha, Kind friends secured hls honorable dlscharge from the army, In order that he might go to work to help his mother who he had loat sight of for nine years. When he went out of the eervice, however, it is said, he de- serted his wother, and left for parts un- known, In April, 1885, Mra. Brlley applied for ald to the ladles of the Woman's Christlan Ald Assoclation. She was taken In and cared for by the kind- hearted matron, Mrs. Pugsley until May 1885, when she secared a position In the famlly of David Neale, cf Fort Calhoun. She worked there two months when she returned to Omaba. Bince that time she has lived in this city, at the corner of Seventeenth and Davenport streets. Mr. Neale, who s a warm friend of hers has been corresponding with her frlends In the east, and has just learned that Mrs. Hedrlck's father has died, leav- ing her a share of a handsome property. The estate will be turned over to her so soon as she can be Identified as the girl who left her home 50 many years ago. Mrs. Hedrick was seen by a reporter last night and did not appear to be unduly elated over her good fortune. She said that she had received a letter from her relatives In the east, notifylng her of her father’s death, she had replied that she would come on as soon as she could get the money. A sad paragraph in Mrs, Hedriok’s life story Isfarnished in the semi tragic way In which she lost her daughter Lydia. Some days ago, there appeared In local print an account of the death by suiclde of & young, glrl Star Fontalne, at the Clother house, Columbus, This young woman afterwards turned out to be Lydia Brilsy, the daughter by first marrlago of Mrs. Hedrick. The girl had many times befora trled to kill herself— once whils at the Child’s hospltal, and once while at the house of Dr. Spregae. The cause of her dispalr Is said to have been unrequited love. Surely such a career a3 that hastily skotched in these lines is a ntravge and a sad one. e — Important Items, There s a lotter at the club addressed fo & very stylish fominine hand to Mr. R'chard S.
