Abbott, and were forclng open a window when the dog made such a nolse as to arouse the family and frighten the intruders off. They left thele heel marks, and the ovi- dences of work on the window. Lewis and Beecroft, two well-known expressmen, had a row Saturday over the hauling of some baggage, in which Bes- croft got several sharp raps over the head with the butt end of a whip. A MISSING MAN, He Comes to Council Bluffs With Money to Buy Goods and Disappears, A shoemaker, named Carpenter, left his home in Paclfic Junction last Monday to como to this city on business, and has not yet roturned nor been heard from by his family. He has a wife and two children, and they are naturally suffering greatly from anuxlety and suspense. Sher- iff Dan Farrell was here yesterday hunt. Ing for tho mistiog man, and learned that he arrlved here Monday and called at Larson’s leather store, where he had Intended to buy scme stock, and to pay a bill of about $54, the money for which he had with him. He did not settle the blll, and made nu purchase, but said he would be In again. He tcld some other party that he was going over to Omaha, to see If he could not do better there, and it was learned that he really did go there, and that he was seen golng to the depot in that clty last Tuesdsy morning with the avowed Intention of returning to this city. This Is the last trace had of him, He was a very stendy man, and was not given to drink, pelng 8o constf- tuted that a vyery little whisky would set him crazy, so he seldom touched any- thing in that line. There seems to be no other clrcumstances which would cause him to voluatarily absent himself from his family, and while he was not rich, stlll he was not In any financlal distress. Varlous theorles are advanced as to what has become of him, but they are all theories, and there seems thus far no facts developed to substantlate any one of them. He is a man of about thirty-five years of age, sandy complexion, full beard, well sprinkled with gray. Accord- ing to the boy’s story he s51d a horse to Reynolds, who was a stranger, and who wss dealing in horses, and Reynolds pald him two dollars in cosh and two notes, guar- antecing that the notes wore good, and that all he would have to do would be to present them and got the cash on them. The boy, after tryiog In vain to collect the notes, learned on inquirlng that the signers were not worth any property, and that thelr paper had no value in the money market. He also dlscovered that Reynolds had endorsed the notes “‘without recourse,” and hunt- ing up Reynolds he demanded back his horse, bzlieving that such was the under- standing and sgreoment when the trade was mado, Rzynolds refused to do any- thing sbout it, and so he was arrested.
