Mr. McBride and Frank Cook yester- day presented to Abe Lincoln post, Grand Army cof the Republic, through Wall McFadden, a large pictare of Grant, An unoccupled house at the corner of Ninth avenue and Sixth street, owned by A. B, Walker, was struck by lightning Thursday n'ght, the chimney knocked off and the roof somewhat injured. Arrangements have been made for a tecturo here by Steven A. Douglas, jr., on Wednesday evenlng of next week, While here Mr. Douglas will be the guest of Mr. George Keelluef on Park avenuo. On account of the {llness of Mre. Falk, the organ concert has been indefinitely postponed. This isa disappolntment to the muslc lovers, bnt the assurance is given that they will yet have the treat at some future date, Marrled—By the Rev. J. Fisk, at his resldence on Benton street, Luther Hol- comb and Mary A, Coy, both of Counell Bluffs, They started for Valentlne, Nobrasks, carrylng with them the good wishes of kind frlends, Peter Laustrop, who is deallng In real estate in Kansas and Minnesota, and who Is getting up weokly excurslons of land purchasers, 1s making his headquarters with Willlam Laatrop, at No. 306 Broadway. Desplte the threatening weather there were a goodly number who attended the lawn party and supper glven by the Con- gregatlonal ladies at the resldence of J, E. Harkness, on'First avenue, yesterday afternoon and evening, [ {One of the largo plate windows in the Councll Bluffs carpet company's store, on Broadway, was broken yerterday In a rather mysterlous way, there being eev- eral theorles of the cause, with no very eatisfactory to prove any of them, The stroke of lightning which lojured the chimney of the Empkle hardware company’s block Thureday night caused such a shock to Mtss Wyckoff’s boardir « house, on Fourth street, that the plaster- log nearly all fell from the walls of one room, The trlo who were so badly clubbed In an altercation with Ofticer Smullen, havo been dlsposed of, the first starter, Tim Ryan, belng fined $5 snd coxts, his brother, the giaut, belog dissharged, and the third one, James Turner, baiug fined as & plaln drunk, The Home of the Fricndless seems to be feeling the general depresston, the re. oeipta for the week balng §10.03 in cagh, aud $0 In werchandite. To thus pro- vide for alamily of forty odd takes some appouled fiow o THE DAILY BEE--COUNCIL BIUFFS SATURDAY, JULY 25, 1885, IIIEEG: e e e ——————————— = “‘-fi—‘.—%fl frelght agent, and 7. N. Babcock, locil J. L. UsBEVOISR, THE REMINGTON financlerlng, and by no means meeta the needs of the Institation. The house located on the corner of Seventh avenue and Ninth street, lately owned by M. A, Upton, and sold by him to Mr. Ament, was struck by lightning in Thursday night's storm, and the chim ney knocked off and the roof somewhat damaged. The honse was not ccsupied. Frank Hunter, deputy clerk of the Unlted States court retarned yesterday, having been called from his officlal duties by the lllness and death of his father, who dled at Browning, Mo., a few days ago, and who was taken to Summit, Tows, and lald to rest beside his wife, who dled some twelve yeara bofore. Dave Twombley, who has served ac- ceptably as foreman of the ocar depart- ment of the Chlcago, Milwaukee & St. Paul, hisa resigned this position to accept a better one on the Kansas Clty, In the south, (. O, Case has been appolnted to fill the vacancy thus caused, and there s no doubt bat that he will fill 1t well, At the Oongregational church to-mor- row morning the pastor, Rev. G, W. Crofts, will preach a memorlal sermon on the life and character of Gen. Grant. There will be no evenlng eervice, it hav- Ing been declded to suspend the evening services for alx weekas on account of the heat. Officer O'Brien was busy yesterday huntlng over the clty for some fellows who were wanted eclrewhere on a charge of larceny, atd of whom he had a descrlption, Several pereons were plcked up on suspleion, three being found in the notorlous colored houee on Pierce street, kept by the Johnsons, but they proved to be rallway boys and not the ones wanted. The statements made by the other papers of the clty that Deputy Unlted States Marshal McCreary had been suc- ceeded by West proves to be premature, for no such change has been made, and may not be. McCreary has the assur- ance that he is to hold on for the present, and perhaps permanently, and that there will at least be no ckange until Marshal Campbell comes here and looks over the situatlon, Judge Conner has issned the desired Injunction restralning Clty Welghmaster Galvin from running a saloon at Weston. Galvin seems to be in hard luck all around, his clty ofice not proving as profitable as he expected, and now his new venture has gone wrong. He will have to joln in with the other members of the political trio, and beg the Wash- Ington authorltles to glve him an Indian to feed, or some other lucrative position. “Doc"” Scott, who Is one of the well- known characters In the city, has been complalned of before Justice Schurz, by Fred Bokemper, who declares that Scott has been committing perjury. The wvuble aroma from the fact that Scott, who kept bar for Bokemper, sued him for wages, and In the trial of the case, some tlme ago, before Justlca Fralney, Scott swore that he dld mot work for Bokemper just for his board, which Bokemper now declares he can prove was deliberate perjury. Scott has not been arreeted yet, and hence no time set for a hearing. Prof. C. B. Lipfert has arrlved fn the clty, with the Intention of permanently locating here and opening an academy of musle, giving Instractlon in all branches of the art, and securing for this purpose needed assiatants, He comes here with the reputation of belng a thorough musi- clan and an excellent tcacher., He s especially skilifal In the handling cf the organ and plano, Mr. Mueller, whose name ls 8o widely and favorably kuown In muslcal matters, sposks very highly of him, and s giving him all the encourage- meut and help In starting that is possl- ble, and as there ls an excellent opening here for such an Institution, he will doubtlees succeed, The Bek yesterday morning chronicled the fact that several boxes of clgars had been glven to the fire depariment asa slight token of appeclation felt of the valiant way In which they pat ont the blaze the other night. Yesterday some of the boys were Inquiring where the clgara had gone to. It 1s clalmed that as usual, No. 4 got not a single sniff, and that No. 1 got fifteen, Now the boys wonder what become of the rest of the soveral hundreds. It seems that thereis hardly as even a division of clgars as there s of labor, The boys are satlsfied that the doner meant all right, and that he 18 not to be blamed, but that the elgars fell Into unfortunate hands, A fellow whose namo is Good, If his reputation s not, was arrested somo tme ago for being too intimste with a dusky matden whom he had the effeont- ery to Ineist ho was golng to marry, He was glven a fow hours to ramove himself from the clty, but yesterday the police eyes spled him and he was brought up to the statlon to glve an ascount of him- solf. Itseomed that he had picked up a green German who had rome money and who was bound for Chicago. Good satd that he was golng that way himsclf, and In view of bis previous record the sus plelon was aroused that he proposed to his experlence for some of the money. There was not oyl however, to German ad- Gorman's denco enough agalns’ him, wairant his beiog held, but the was pat on bls guard and Good wa vised to travel in rome other direotion. Arrangements have been made for grand excarelon to 8x, on Thorsda July 50th, leaving Council Blofls at snd ar leve for home st any time they may cheose, The fara for the round trip bas been placed at §4.95. This glves the peoplo of 1his y| cinity an excellont opportunity to visit this popular and pleasaut rosort, and to bave a werey time with viry little ex peese, Those dealr'ng further particg Iars can obtaln them by oslling at the ing there In the af. ernoon, with the excureionisis to leave for MOURNING THE HERO. Conteil Blefls Cilizens Making Saitable Arrangements, The Committees Appointed, The storm Thareday night interforred greatly with themeeting of clt/zana callad at Masonic hall to make arrangements for the day of Gen.
