Ste Fecls Good Becanse Business i Picking Up, aud Reel Estate Advanciog, A Generally Prosperous “,Good Time LT tLooms Up For the Sonthern ) Metropolis, e Strengthens the Muscles, Steadies the Nerves, ives New Vigor. o (T Correapondence of the Bk, NrnaskA City, Neb., July 22.—The questlon of the new large stock yards and pork packing house now belng de- finitely settled, and our government post- offise being previously “‘fixed” some four weeks back, our citizens are now chuck- ling over the city's good luck, and neatly everybody ls prophesylng, with ten to one In favor of the prophet, that Ne- braska Clty will have donbled her present population two years hence. The stock yards will oecupy slxteen acres of ground, while the packing house will be of a little larger capacity than our present one. In seme future letter 1 wlil give a descrlption of the two In- stitatlons that the readers of the Ber may be aware of the ‘‘blg things” now assured for Nebraska Clty. Apropos to the general good times which we anticlpate with theiatroduction of our many new enterprlees CITY PROPERTY 1S CRAWLING steadily upward In price, and sales in the real estato line are quadruple what they were at this time last year, Tne river, of which Its meanderlngs were mentioned in our last letter, has now began its destructive work necessary before the channel is ful- ly settled on this side, and two of our largest brick yardasituated on the bank of river are succumblng to the insatlable appetlte of the ‘‘mighty Missourl.” One of the brick makers, Mr, Roseline, hav- Ing partly finlshed burning his kilt of brick, and they belng too hot to handle, is forced to stand by and see them gob- bled up by the angry waters. Some little apprehension was feared by the Nebraska Clty Distillery Co., that their cattle sheds would be washed away but the Indlcations are now more favorable. Our cltizens were consldera- bly worked up last week by the fact that & party of rallroad surveyors had strack the town, COMING FROM THE SOUTHWEST, Who they were nobody seems to have been able to find out, but 1t is the opin- fon of most of our citizens that they were In the employ of the Mlissourl I’a- cific raflroad, and were surveying a line from elther Talmage or Delta, However, the cry is, “‘Glve us another rallroad,” and Nebraska Cltyites don’t care where It comes from 80 long a8 It gets hero. The Burlington & Missour! surveyor, Col. Dudley. bas been tn the city for the past seversl days surveying the switches for the new packing house, also one for the distillery. The latter com- pany claim they can save $30 per day by the bullding of the switches to their establishment, Col. Giles *‘great aggregation of consol. idated wonders,” at *'whose mighty ap- preach the earth trembles " the only cir- cus of thisfyear for Nebraska City showed here last week. As the show was leav- Ing next morning attachment papers were served on It for $350 by one of the cir- cus’ employes. Matters were arranged #0 that the “‘aggregation” was allowed to proceed to Sidney, lowa where they “‘anted up.” Our cltizens are wrathy over the cen- sus taking thls year. Although the reports have not been made public yet those who have had access to the reports say that the population of the clty will fall short 5,000. The report from the from the third ward seems to hold right. but there Is a vast discrepancy in tne second and third wards and many bltter refloctions are cast on the census enum- erator of those wards—Mr, Jack Farley. He leaves to-day for White Cloud, Kas., ostensibly to take a position with the government englneers, but we opine he s pleased at the prospect of leaving our clty at once. The board of education at their last meeting decided that an enlargement of the high school and Third ward school was necesgary, and bids to that effect are now being advertised. Nebraska City has now a full fledged MILITIA COMPANY ol brave boys in blue, who are ever ready to answer the call for protection whether from near or afar. Upon second ] ught we believe the boys are already ecared out of slx monthagrowth, as they havo not been able to materlallzs a meoting sinco the itquiry recelved a fow days sgo from tho state adjutant general as to how many men Nebraska Clty’s militla could furnish in caee of the vrospectlve Indian trouble on our western horders., Tho Consolidatea Tavk Line company has awarded to Mr. L. Zimmer, of this clty, the contract for erectlvg their ox- tensive cooper shops, also roridence for the use of their manager, The cooper shops will be located in the northwast corner of the block owned by the com- pany, the residonce for the ‘mansger in the northeast corner. The cooper shops will give employmont to eixteen hands at the start. The company intend hore- after to barrel oll only at Omaha and this clty, and will ship thelr tanks from Lin- coln and the other polnts to here, Sheol—that new reglon of Infernal weather, has sont a baautiful sapply of its products here the past week or ten days. Hat brims are vory narrow, Tongeos have velvet stripes. Huge garden hats are stili worn. Lace grows in favor o the season advances. Fancy galloons are mixed with chenille in Oriental coloring. Some of the new beaded galloons have the beads painted by hand. Vun's veiling is trimmed with surah, velvet or with yak lace, Rhbine stone pins for the hair are the order of the day at present, Moiro autique sashes six or eight inches wide are becoming more popular, Brown dresses are trimmed with lace run with threads of copper. The milkmaid overskirt and the housemaid frock are rivals in women's favor at the mo- ment, Woolen tulle is now manufactured and is as fine as that of cotton. It is made up over colored silk. Repousse brass work is the newest fancy occupntion of women of leisure who are actis- tically inclined. Gradatton of colora are fashionable, and fre. quently three ehades wili be worn over the toundation silk skirt. If made of laca or etemine they are lined with silk like that of the dress, Small pins or brooches, no_ear rings, few finger rings and very slender bracelets make up the catalogue for the summer jewelry of a woman of taste, "The deep, dark plot of a Baltimore girl was to mix some chemical with the rouge used by a rival, 50 that it would turn her cheeks black indelibty instead of pink, 1t is said that in Fngland lovers remain en gaged from three to five yoars. Several dwellings have been built and twenty or thirty are now building. Employment is now furnished to about one hundred and fifty families, and conservative estimates place the figure at cight hundred to one thousand families that will find em- ploynient there a year hence. - This offers great inducements to laboring men to secure homes now while they are cheap. In the few other cities that are favor- ed with a first class cattle market, fortunes have been made by investors in real estate, and the same is certain to follow in South Omaha.
