Two Country Girls Come to Omaha in Search of Work and Lured in to Jail. ‘The subject of a most pitlfal and dis- tresslng story was farnlshed by Officer Green Tuesday evening, when he appaar- police headuarters with two girl prison- ors, and led them into the women’s cell where they were locked up to remaln over night, Opposite their names on the reglster was wrltten “‘Larceny,” and when a reporter for the Bee made Inqul- rlos to ascortaln what they had stolen, he was informed. _One man, who s:emed to kaow all about,1t whispered In his ear, “‘thls is an outrazyous pises of basiness, Thoze girls are no mora guilty of larceny than Iam.” With this much of & point- or to work on the reporter began an lo- vestigatlon, the rasult of which s glven in what follows. Last Thursday Julis Moore and Celia Morgan, two rather pre- possessing girls, each about 16 years of age, utterly ignorant of the world and its wicked ways, set foot in Omaha and started about from beuse to house lookiog for work, as domestics in private fami- llee. They had left thelr homes, the former comlog from Columbus and the latter from North Piatte, fmaglning that their lives there were unenaurable, and filled with grievcus paternal wiongs, Thursday evening, after havirg walked through the hot streets several hoars, tun-barned and covered with the dust of travel, and having been uneuccessful in secaring any place to work, they began to think the glittering world was not what thelr silly young imaglnatioas had plotured it, In the dusk of evenlng they were 80 unfortunate as to knock at the door of a disreputable domleile, on How- ard ctreei, hetween Ninth and Tenth, which was occupled by Rose Mason, the same man THE FEDERAL CASES, who almost dled In the city jall, Sonday night, with hysteries because of having been arrested of robbery. The apparent kindness of thls woman was gr-dly accepted by the two girls and they remained over night. Friday morning the Mason woman extended her kind- ness, by glvlog each of the glrls, a change of dress to wear until the oclothes they had on ocould bs washed. That day they renewed thelr search for work, but were agaln ansucoessful. Frl day night the notorlous Lotta Coombs was also an Inmate of the Mason ranche, also several wicked men. They madeé a lively party for the new gaests, forclng them to drink beer and wine untll both were out of thelr heads. When awakened Saturdsy morning they then real'zed the kind of den they wers In and left it as qulckly as they could, wearlng the bor- rowed dresses. They went to a respect- able house on North Sixteenth street and secured lodging. AT THE STOCKYARDS, A Guod Bunch of Oattle From Spring- field—The Qorn-fed Cattle, The Omaha stock market still continues to boom and the recelpts and shipmenta stlll show a healthy and substantial in- crease. Tuesday was a lively day as well as yesterday, Among the good looking “hofty” bunches of cattle brought in was that of Messrs. J. D. & A, L. Spearman, of Springfield, Neb., who sold some eighteen or twenty carloads, or abont three hundred head of cattle In all. The cattle were al! of good weight, and brought a No. 1 prlces. DMessrs. Spea man are very heavy cattle growers, and thelr actlon in selling their stock hera 1s gratifylng evidence that they have great falth in the Omaha market. Heretofore they have been shipping thelr cattle to Chlcago, but having found that they can do just as well or better here have deter— mined to ship only to Omaha. Thus is the fame of the home market extending among the cattlemen of the west. A goodly number of hogs have also been disposed of yesterday and Taesday. Quite a large number were sold here and shipped through to Chicago. A reporter In conversation with one of the stockyards people yesterday learned that the supply of cornfed cattle s now “talling off '—that is falllng off, and will soon cease altogether. It 1s belleved that the grass-fed cattle: will soon be swinging Into the market in unlimited numbers, 80 as to farnish the slaughter- houses with the fullest desirable quota of beeves. The slaughter-houses are run- ning on rather slim supply at present but In a few days will undoubtedly be able to do a rushing business, — Seal of North Oarolina Tobacco Is the best., A ROUGH REGULAR,. Harry Lynn, charged with disorderly conduct, was discharged. Peter Green pald a fine of $5 and costs for belng drank, John Hendrickson was arralgned for obtalnlng goods under false pretenses. 1t seems that on the Fourth of July, he went Into the drug store of John Bell on on South Tenth street, and representing himself to be the agent of Slncere’s dye works, procured from Mr, S. B. Bell, a sult of clothes, to be dyed. He has never returned the clothes, and when arrested this morning, he was wearing the sut. Judge Stenberg, after hearing the case, sentenced Hendrlckson to pay a fine of 825 and costs, and to make restoration to Mr. Bell in the sum of $20. A 8hort Reminiscence, Tuesday night as the steamer ‘‘Nellle Peck,” which stopped here over night and wentdowntheriveryesterday morning, was comlog Int> vlew, an old resldent who was viewlng the slght from the north alcony of the court house broke Into reminlscence, a brlef bit of which s re- produced: *‘I well ramember the days when the river traflic was quite large on the upper Missourl, and when Omaha was conslderable of & river town. In those days, fificen or twenty years ago, about the only way we had of reaching the south or southwest was by water. We used to have tough experiences In those days. I remember one time coming up the river from St. Louls In the little Oae of the Soldiers at Fort Omaha After Another With a Warrant, Frank Day, a priyate in company B, Fourth Infantry, atationed at Fort Omahafwas In the clty yesterday evening, swearing out a warrant for the arrest of Private Timme, who soldiers in company E. Thls man Timme had been down town during the afternoon, swearlng eternal allegiance to the old tlag In several bumpers of the stufl that cheers, and went home feeling quite leery. Shortly after dark he went to Day’s houss, and commenced maklng wrouble for the two women, To elude belng taken hold of by him, they ran ont of the house and took to the pralrle.
