Prom Poverty 1o Affinence and Back 10 b3 Galter, The Oareer of Johnny Skae and His Three Millions—A Typical Mush- room Millionaire. John Skae, a prominent mining speeu lator, who accumulated immense wealth in the Uomst mines and afterward lost it,dled In Ssn Franclaco on the 17th, Mr. Skae was three times a milllonalre, and s believed to have dled pennlless, though upon this latter poiat different views are entertalned. The history of Mr. Skae's elevation to the dignity of a millionalre, and hls rapid return to the humllity of a poor man would excite the despest wonder ln a community whero the wheel of fortune revolves more slowly than 1s agreeable to the adventurons Californlan, ~ Mr. Skae was born In Canada, Ono of his parents being Seotch and the other Irish, it ls rather diflicalt to classify him nationally. It Is an establlshed fact, however, that, ko the msjority of men who have ac- quired great wealth on the Paclfic coast, he started In the racs for fame from an humble position, He was a tolegraph operator of uncommen ability, which was utilized In the business of transmit- ting between the Comsiock and the San Franclsco stock market. The great lode was almost bursting with the promlss of untold millons, and the whole coast was In the throes of a malignant mining fover. The wires were burdened with the hlstory of the lode from day to day, and there was no one who read the story with more Inter- est than Johnny Skae, the telegeaph op- erator. It llves In the history of the Com- stock and the anecdotes of the telegraph offices that the little Canadlan operator not only read the secret dlspatches, bat, unltke the majority of his craff, possessed the business tact to make capital of hls knowledge. The information thrust be- fore him day by day made him master of the situatlon as far as his capltal could extend, and he contlnued to expand the limits of his oparations untll the tele- graph oftice knew him no more. The easy pace of a prudent bondholder was not to the Jiking of Mr. Skac, how- over, and he embraced all the opportuni- ties that the stock market offered for ex- cltement untll the fame of the biz bonan- zx set half tise country at its wit's end. Johnny Skae had but a small amount of stock when 1t commencad to climb the ascale of prices, but he dashed at the market, and, with astoundlng reckless- ness, followed the securitles until Consolidated Virginia was close to the one thousand dollar Ilimit and California mining stock was set atan equally exorbitant sum, When the “‘deal” onded and the tidal wava of ex- cltement had receded, leaving the mark- etatrewn with the wrecks, Johnny Skae was §3,000,000 ahesd. One by one the crop of mlllionalres was gathered into the Nevada bank and lost to the outside and no longer endearlng world. With the others went Johnny Skae, 8o roport sald, and the public mind, having satls- fied itself that the ex-telegraphor was no Longer & milllonalre, expunged him from its most sensltlve spot. Those who watched the stock market and the figares revolving around 1t knew that Johnny Skae was stlll Interested in the secaritles, but 1t tock a practiced eye to detect his presence. Hls reckless system of “‘doubling up” until hls *‘mar- glns” were too thin to support hls alr castles had made a sad Inroad on his three milllon “‘clean up,” and left him to hang kis hopes on a few speculative pro- pertfes. In thls uninvitiog category was the Slerra . Nevada mine, of which Mr., Skae weas president, Hope long deferred had made the Slerra Nevada stockholders very sick indeed. The stock was down to bedrock, but even at that state Mr. Skae did not want {t. The market seemed dead. A sudden deslre for travel postessed the miving men. Mr. Skae, obeying the popular Impulse, went east. He had not reached his destination, when the entire aspect of affairs on the Comstock and on the San Frinclsco stock market was changed by a few dispatches, One of these 1nformed Mr., Skae tha’ there were indlestions of a bonanza in Sierra Ne- vada, and he came back asfast asa speclal train could carry him, An exam- inatlon of the mine convinced him that a great bonarzy was In protpect, and, with he dashed into the market. He had only 3,000 shares of Slerra Nevada and not a preat desl of his §3,000,000 clean-up on Consolidated Virginis. All that he had, however, went to his brokers, and she substantial firm on Plae street which he patronizad was ordered to **double up.” The firm doubled for the bold speculator, and he bought on his broker’'s money until the stock stool at $278 a share, The mame tactics and the same firm hand etood him In good stead In the Consolidated Virglola and Californla excitement, and seemed to be serving him well again, He becams tha lion of the hour, Before It had baen Flood, but the new star eclipsed the Nc vada bank, He was halled a3 tho “father of the new bonaczas,” and his prospec- tive milllons counted up by his admirers until Vanderbllvs fortune seemsd only a plttance. Songs in his pralse were mado. Aa alleged poet, now engeged on a stock paper, dessribed the magnave's hasty re- tara from the east in & parody on *Sher- idan's Ride,” and headed ““Johnny Skae's Ride,” The eulogized magnate left no stone unturned to increase his popular- ity. He lost 50,000, it was sald, at one poker game In tho Palace hotel 1n one night. His unostentatious acts of chas- ity here, however, were nothing to his benevolent explolts on the Comstock, where a mtlifonafre who does zot live up tothe tenets of tke town ls regarded ay fit for no nobler purpose than to label him for congress or the senate and ship bim to Washington, For weeks the fame of Mr. Skae transcended that of any millionalre on the Vaclfic coast, but the wane of his star was eoon observed. The croes cuts inthe 1,700 foot level of the promtsed bon- stubbornly refused to yleld §2,000 as- s, and by reptd etages the public dis trust of the property increased, untll a porphery horee kicked the last prop from the confidenco of the market and preclp- itated & panlo, The subsequent events tending to prodace the present stagnation on the stcck market are ton recent to need a deseription, When the echoes of the crash had died away Jobnny Skae, the temporary 1dol of the Cometock, the *‘father ot the new bonanzs,” the prince. ly poker player and the lavish exenp of Novada hospitallty, was viriuall pauper, Ho held his atcck to the top tigure, and when the crash came the mar. glos were swept away. After a whilo ho was heard of in the Columbus dlstric’, and was reported to have made enother strike, but the report was evidently bared on his luck, for he scon after turned upi 82 an lnmate of the small pox hospltal, ) He served for some time as bookkeeper of that institation, and then disappeared from publlc ken until the pollce found him 1n a helpless condition on the street, and locked him ap 1n default of §5 ball. Checkered as the typlosl life in the west 18 1t furniehes few such examples of mis adventure as that of a man who, In two years, reached sach extremes of & 1laence and poverty that he might have written his cheek for ten mlillions, and could not pay 0. e 1I0WA ITEMS, The blackberry crop around Davenport was a failare this year, Davenport consumes or wastes three miilion gallons of water a day.
