E. Harkness next Frlday afternoon and evening, Grace street should be called Disgrace street. 1t is In such a horrible condition as to demand some prompt attentlon on the part of the clty authoritles. THE CITY OF THE DEAD. A Dirty Fling at the Trustees of Fairview Cemetery by the Injunctionists, The howl ralsed about the clty of the dead, and the sensational outry that the clty of the llving Is belng endangered In health, does not meet with the unanimous endorsement which s represented by the twilight organ in its sophomorle slop-over of Saturday evening. It says “‘lt Is no longer & question upon which thero can be two opinlons,” and yet It proceeds to confess that there are many of the lead- Ing cltlzens who take the other side of the question, and it proceeds to charge these citizens with the basest conduct, and to intimate that they are the meanest sort of rascals, It says “A fow old restdents with an eye to profits converted the graveyard and adjacent grounds Into a corporatlon for pecunlary profit to'themselves,” and charges these old resldents with a willlng- ness to have dlsease and death scattered through the clty for the sake of personal galn. It must be a weak cause that de- pends on such dirty flings ageinst such men as J, M, Phillips, Horace Everstt, J. P. Casady, John Hammer and Samuel Jacobs, who have been the trustees of this assoclatlon for nearly twenty-five yeara, and whoze reputations are so far above that of the Impecunlous scribbler who makes the attack that comparlson would not merely be odious, but insulting to them. The articles of Incorporation of Falr- view cemetery assoclatlon declare that all the profits from the sale of lots shall be devoted to fmproving, extending and beautifying the same. That these men have proved false to this most eacred of truets secms gso vile a slander as to show that the cause, In the helping of Mary French, the woman who went through a house here some time ago. The ladies of the Episcopal church have concluded to change the arrange- ments and glve thelr soclal and dance on Wednesday evening instead of to-night, J. T. Henderson, of this clty, has got a patent on his Improvement on roller skates. Now 1f he could get some Im- provements In skating rinks he would do better. A baker and a blacksmith had a ltvely set-to on Maln sireet Saturday night, The blacksmith got the worst of it, and eays the baker used some sling shot or other weapon, The Aylesworth-Loofbourow contest waa to have been declded In Des Moines, but as predicted by the Ber, another postponement was Indulged in, this time untll next Saturday. Happy Jack was supremely happy Saturday night, and was sleeplng off a arunk on the platform of the Wabash depot. He was not so happy ycsterday, the cooler belng anything but cool, Rev. F. T. Webb, of Helens, Mon- tana, yesterday officlated at St, Paul's church, of which he was formerly the rector. It was gratifylng to many to again have the privilege of listening to him, Tom Bowman has been suffering from malarla badly since hlsreturn from Wash- Ington, Itistobe hoped that he will soon be himself agaln, but In the mean time he can congolo himself by the faot that he 1s not the only politiclan who has gone to Washington after a postoflice and got tho ekake, Mrs, Willlam Phillips died at her home In Grove towhship about 3 o'clock Satar- day mornlng, of kidney dlsease. Smith, the englnoer of the City Millls, has eoliclted subscriptions for & new wheel ohalr for P, A, Rltchie, a cripple who 18 paralyzed in the lege, and yestorday presented the chalr to Ritchie, Tt scems Ritchie's old chalr became unfit for use, and D. W. Smith’s eympathy Wwas excited and be went to work and got +he chalr for the cripple. which 1t {s glven, must be a desperate one, and lacking real merit to present to the publlc. These gentlemen have never made any secret of the fact that they have glven ground for the burial of such perzons, whose friends have been unable to pur- chase lots, or who as strangers have died here, and thelr frlends have been un. known, or at a distance. The evening paper, parading at the head of ita col- umns the pretense that it Is the organ of the workingmen, and prating so much about its sympathy with the down-trod- den, the poor and the unfortunates, speaks of these as ‘“‘creatures, who have been huddled together pell mell In this peculiarly infected portion of the grave- yard.” They may be only ‘‘crastures,” in the eyes of the Herald, but they were human, the same as thelr more fortunate brothers, and perhaps more worthy in some respects, but In any event, worthy of decent burlal. Shrouds have no pock- ots, and why the body of a poor man should be more to be feared than the body of the rich, is a queary. It has been sald that the only true democracy. Is in the grave, but the pretended work- ingmen’s organ even there wants to start an arlstocracy, and bar out the poor. There is hardly need of denying the wild statement that ‘‘paupers with infectlous dlseases are burled there,” for the con- trary fact 1s so well known to the publie, Jt seems strange that such a howl should be raised, when in the city of the ltving there ara scores of alleys, dirty, breeding disease and and certaluly more offenslve and unhealthy than cemeteries, even if they were as bad as represented. There are thousands of vaults and cess- pools throughout the olty, In closer prox- imity to wells and to parlors than s the cemotery, and cortatnly more deadly, and yet these are to be maintained without a wWord, except an occasional proclamation, to glve some hungry newspaper an ad- vertisement. Silence and Inactlon con- cerning all these, but a feroclous fright agalnst the sacred city of those who can no longer defend themselves, a ruthless disregard for the feellngs of those still living, whose affections are so closely linked with the silent forms: a vile at- tack upon those who hold their resting places in trust; what does this strange inconslstency mean! It Is urged that a new cemetery be started In the southern part of the clty, but there seems to be no assurance but what in that event, property near It would bo bought up and improved, and then these property owners would want it moved again, and the history of the present grounds re-enacted. The present cemetery was located before there was a residence In that part of the city, and those who have eince bought and Im- proved property there, did 55 knowlngly. To abandon this most besutirul spot, dedicated to the dead, and to deprive those now living of the hope of belng The Union Paclfic round house burned to the ground Saturday afternoon, about b o'clock. It was located some distance north of the other bulldlngs on the trans- fer grounds, and was an old shell of a frsme bullding, contalnlog only two stalls, Itis supposed to kave caught by a spark from the engine of train No, 4, which had just backed around the Y, to 80 to Omaha, The evening probipltionfst has got badly mixed ss to the location of the cemetery, It says It s “‘Imwediately under the eyes of our people and bo- ueath the dripplng roofs of thousande of our homes, 1t is above the elty some 200 feet,” ete, It looks as 1f tie prohiblitlon. st had been taking somethlng stronger han Missouri river water when the above 148 ponned, burled beside those they loved, for the sake of advancing the value of some prl- vate real estate, is a strange proposltion. Flve years sgo this man came into his store, and represented himself as & stock man named Gardioer, from Oregon, He clalmed to have been referred to Bono There will bo a home euterlalument at by Mr. Keelone, snd stated that he wanted to buy a-lot of clothing for some cow boys. In the coarse of the talk, it was stated by him that he must get his trunks up from the depot, and he needed £2.50, and did not want to go back to the hotel after any money. Mr. Beno, will- Ing to accommodate thecustomer, and not having the exact change handed him five doflars, and the fellow dlsappeared. Satarday morning a man came Into the store and told about the same story, ex- cept that this time he had a lot of MexI. cans he wanted to fit up with clothes. He only wanted sixty-five cents to get his baggage this time, the general de- pression of business aflecting the confi. dence men as well as others. Mr. Beno was about to shake hands with him, call- ing him ‘‘Gardiner, the Oregon stock- man,” when the fellow flew out and made a ran along Peatl street, but was chased by Mr. Beno, eaught and placed In the city cooler to awalt a hearing to.day. — Mueller Music Company ‘Will gell all the pianos and organs pur- chased at the J. It Results in Being Robbed] in An Alleyway, An elderly man, whose name was not learned, was complalning at a late hour Saturday night that he had been robbed In an alley off from Broadway and about in the rear of the opera house exchange. It seems that the man was on his way east and tarrled here for a day orec, and got pretty full of Council Bluffs pop. He went Into the alley and lolled down on the steps In the rear of the saloon named and after the ealoon was locked up he was aroused from a drowse by a man rudely shaking him up and polnting a revolver at his head, demanding hls money. He naturally gave It up. The description of the robber is in the hands of the police, and they are on the hunt for him, but so far without any success, FRUIT, AND GARDEN FARM FOR SALE.
