On account of delay in issulng llquor liconses last year quite an amount of license money appears in the report which really belongs to the year previous, mak— ing the apparent collections from that source larger than were actually due. Notwlthstanding the many calls made upon them for payment of speclal assesa- ments, the taxpayers of Omaha have so generally responded that I can report to you that the delinquency In the city for the current year {s now less than 645 per cent, which is a littlo better showing than was made last year. The delin- quency on the 1883 tax llst Is now 1 3-4 per cent; on the 1882 tax list lees than 1 1.6 per cent, and on the 1881 tax llst, 1 1-2 per cent. The Condition of the OCereal Throughout Nebraska—Elevator Building, “*Yes,” sald Mr. Himebaugh, the ele- vatorman to a BEE reporteryestorday*‘the crops of the state are in very fine condl- tlon. I returned last night from an ex— tensive trlp over the maln line of the Union Paclfic, going as far west as Cozad, the next statlon west of Plum Creek, and balf way between Kearney and North Platte, Cozad, you know, is near the west boundary of the heavy graln-pro- duclng region of the state. Having carefully Inspected this reglon I can say that the present crop cf wheat, corn, oats, barley and rye, all the way from Omaha to the west Dboundary will be equal to that of any prevlous year, if not better. Ihave also taken espacial psins to communicate with the different parts of the state north and eouth of this line and everybody says the same thing about the crope—that never before bas euch abundance been noted In the pro- ductlon of the cersals, How is harves ing progressing? The rye Is nearly all harvested already, belng In the shock or the stack; the barley s being harvested this week and Is nearly half cat already, while tho wheat will be ready to harvest next week, some of it progubly by the first of the week. The acreage of wheat this year will be fully up to tlnt of last year, 0 far as can now see. The crop of oats Is mig- nificent, while the acreage of corn will be not less than 25 per cent. and not more than 40 per cent. more than the crop of 1884, The other cereals will make an equsally favorable comparison. “I‘hero is another thing to be noted,” continued Mr. Himebaugh. *‘I have re- celved communlcations from all over the state with referance to the crops, and I have yet to hear of a locallty where the crops have been destroyed by hail or hard storms “Is there much elevator building go- ing on throughout the state?”’ “Yes, conslderable. Asa conservative estimate I think I may eay that here will be about forty or «fifty new ones bullt in the state this year. About one- third of these are on the U. P. system, while the other two-thirds are on the B. & M. and the Sloux Olty and Pacific, MORE SAFE ROBBING, The OCracksmen Accomplish An- other Piece of Work. As remarked in yesterday’s Bex there is quite evldently a gang of safe cracks- men at work io this clty. Thelr partica- lar forte seems to be the successful raid- Ing of grocery stores. The burglary of Mulvihill & Shelby's grocery store and that of Enewold, 1s now followed by s safe robbery whieh occurred in the gro- cery store of J, O, Slatter, on the corner of SIxteenth and California street Wednesday nlght. The oracksmen got into the store from the rear, coming thruugh a feed room. They thin went to work und driiled s hole in the safe, nesr the combinatlon lock, next taking a jmmy and forcing away the combination. The till was then prled open and about $56 In cesh stolen. The books and papers of the firm were taken out and scattered {n the back yard, and were found thls morning, together with some of the tools which were used. There s very lit le clue to the cracks- men, Some slight sueplclon res's upon & young man who cime Into the store In the afternoon, and after making s smell purchase asked to be allowed to go into tbe back yard, It lssupposed that while there he made a survey of the premises, with a view to deterwining the easlest methed of effecting an entrance.
