Louls Falk, who Is one of the finest sopranos in the west. The well- earned reputation of these gifted artlsts will oause the Presbyterlan church to be crowded. The actlon of these sirenes are so beld and often so disorderly that the city is disgraced, and decent women dread to appear on the sircets In the eveulng, The police have xade some feeble attempts to meko thom bebave themselves, but when arrested they are lot off, with & chlaing, or with & promise to pay a fine, a small one, and there seoms to be little Improvement In thelr street manners, It Is high time that this dill dallylng came to sn end, and that those In power took such promp and firm aotlon as to correct the abuses. Decent cltizons have some rights as well a8 those who contribute by fines to the- police fund. Among the articles atiracting attentlon of those passlrg by a pawn broker’s place on Brosdway Is a policeman’s uniform complete, club and all, with noman Instde of the clothes elther. To the credit of the city police It should be stated that the uniform Is that of a Denver policeman, who getting short «f money while here some tlme ago, thus disposed of the uniform. The marrlsge of Jim Snodderly to Miss Mary Harecher Is an event the announce- ment of which will cause surprise to the aoclal clrcles In which they are so well known. The weddlng was a very qulet one, and the Invitatlons were confined to the Immediate frlends and relatives. The happy man Is prospering in business, and as now seems he meets with like proaperity in love. Arrangements are made for the park commissloners to go to Island Park next Saturday afternoon, to inspect that charming new summer resort and plenle ground, and eee about the contemplated Improvements. B, Somers has_just returned from a trip “to his old home m—Gllelburg, where, on the second of thls month, his sister, Miss A, W. Somers, was marrled to C. W. Dunn, one of the Instructors in Knox college, a young man who was formerly with the Councll Bluffs Insur- ance company, and who has many friends here to congratulate him on having won 80 worthy a bride. L — A MODERN BLUEBEARD. A Tale of Many Tales Concerning au 0ld Resident, The Kecent Mysterious Death of Ons of His Wives. The Coruner Investigating. The report of the sudden and rather mysterlousdeath of a woman named Mrs. Hall, In Boomer townshlp, has caused Coroner Connell to make trlp there, and to make some Informal inqul- rles concerning the matter, It seems that he has struck s nest of sensatlonal re- ports, all concerning the man, Hall, and If half the things told of him are trae he is certalnly as hard a cltizen as ever es- caped the gallows. This man Hall for- merly lived here, and even so far back a8 thirty years ago formed the theme of many a bi% of uneavory gossip. In these early years he was connected with the ferry here, and among the first sensa- tlonal chapters in his life is reported his KILLING OF A LITTLE INDIAN BOY, It seems that the boy peered through the window of Hall's honse one evening, and Hall epylng the dusky face of the lad, fired at him with a shot gun, blowlng «ff the whole top cf the bey's head, kill- iog bim fnetantly. Mr, John Kellar, who still lives here, was among these who saw the boy after he was thus shot, The affalr is sald to have been settled, and hushed up, the squaw belng presented with a few sacks of flour to atone for the loss of her son, HIS FIRST WIFE, The wife whom Hall then had was an Invalid, and has long ago died and her sufferings ended. Hall had the reputa. tlon of belng a very patslonate man, and it is said that while the poor sl k woman was under a physiolan’s oare, and bad to be brought In a lumber wagon from her home np town to the doctcr's office, she was not allowed to make even these trlps in peace, but tha' the husbaud's actions were at such g and terrible to bear g »lso reported that his treatwent of his chlldren was alike apy thing bat fatherly, SHE SAW GHOSTS, After the death of this wife, he is re- ported as having taken to himself a wo! who had no better reputation than he had established, This woman remalned with bim bat a short time, and then left, she cla'ming that the ghost of the first wife haunted the house, and she could not stand the nervous n, “. THE TDIRD WIFE A TRUMPER, Then according to the tradltion, the man took to himself a third companion and with his new wife moved on to a farm In Boomer township, where Le has since livid, it belng about ten miles from Missourl Valley., This woman proved tc be a fariar, vnd ins'ead of breaking down In healih, she was vigorous enough to put the man through & course o he oo y poundlng hiu up lua regalar Sullivan fashion, Wher tred of hiwm she put out for Chicago, and has dropped out of the history, ANOTHER DEATH, The fourth woman whem he teok t« loeelf was #0 far as known a very worthy ore, but she died and her deatt revived many of the previous stories, and added another chapter to the seandalous history. It reoms that she was In adeli- cate conditfon, and belng taken unex- pectedly sick, the children wanted to go after their grand-mother, but the man restralned them, and did not attempt to get any help until it was too late, a doc- tor being sent for from Neols, but arriv- Ing too late to be able to save the woman. While there was no attempt to fasten on the man the direct responsibllity of the death of his wife, yet it appeared to the nelghbors to be at the best, a cruel negleot. THE NEXT MATRIMONIAL VENTURE Of this man appears to have been to marry & Bohemian woman, a widow with weveral children, who was engaged in raising and selling vegetables In and near Missouri Valley. This was the Mrs, Hall, who has recently died so suddenly. Two weeks sgo last Monday she was in usual health, and had been hoelng potatoes all day. About 2 o'clock the next morning she was dead. The only ones in the house that night were the man and wo- man, and & boy. Between 12 and .1 o'clock In the night, Hall woke the boy and sent him over to a nelghbor named Clark, to get help, Mre. Hall belng taken suddenly ill. Whoen the nelghbors came, they found the womsan lying on the front steps, In an Insensible condition, and a bloody froth foamlng from her mouth. Hall was holding her head, and was un- able without asslstance to get her into the house. He explained that about mid- night his wife complained of belng slck at her atomach, and getting out of bed, she went out of doors. Not returning so soon a8 he expected her, he get up to see if anythiog had happened to her, and found her lylog In this fit on the door- step. The woman after being taken into the house lingered In this condition until death came about 2 o’clock, BRUISES ON THE BODY. Among the nelghbors who ‘came in wore John Casey and his wife and Mr. and Mrs. Mansfield. Mrs, Casey and another woman laid Mrs, Hall out, and they declare that they found an abrasion on her head, and brulses on her side. Hall explained these marks by saylog that she must have recelved them when she fell In this fit, but in view of the many other reports concerning Hall, and his treatment of other wives, the tongues of all were set wagglng with indignation. The next morning the bereaved husband hurrled cff at daylight for Miesourl Val- ley to get a casket, and telegraphed her children, who live in Omaha, and his daughter, who is a very worthy woman living here. Hall arranged for having the woman buried the next day at 10 o'clock, about thirty hours after her death., The ne'ghbors had thelr eusplolons aroused that something was wrong, and eent for Justice Yarrington, who is of Harrison county, and who, therefore, had no jurisdiction, but who nevertheless came and locked into affalrs some. None of the nelghbors cared to take the re- sponslbility of making any formal cherge, for fear that they couid not convict Hall, and they clalming that they were afrald that in such an event he would wreak violent vengeance on them in some way. The justice thought that if anyone had oceasion to find fault it should be the children, and they not feellngso dls- posed the matter dropped. woman was buried esarranged, in the burying lot on Hall's farm, beside that of bis other dead wife, and where he has several children burled also. PROMPTLY CONCEALED, A day or two later Hall is sald to have brought a new wife home from Missourl Valley, at least it belng given out In the nelghborhood that she was marrled to him. This woman hsd a child, a boy about four years old, and she answers the description quite well of a woman who with her little boy was recently stopping at & houss of {ll repute In this city, and who went frcm here to Missourl Valley. This new alllance does not seem to have beena long one, for In the course of three or four days, the woman and child left him and returned to Missouri Valley, she saying that she could live easicr and happler as she was before, THE CORONER ON THE SCENT, Ooroner Connell is consldering the ad- visabllity of exhuming the body of the wife who has just died, and baving an inquest and post mortem held. The neighbor: strong in thelr susplclons of foul play, and yet none of them feel like taking the responsibility of fillng complaints. Aslde from this matter, there are 50 many other statements made concerning this man’s recora, that it seems that he {5 elther the worst ma- ligned man In the county, or else the worst in fact, —— Mueller Music Company Will gell all the pianos and organs pur- chased at the J, Mueller salo at closing- out prices, Elther cash or tlme pa; ments.
