While in an exhilarated condition, he went out on the back platform, and doubtless believing himself to be in the embrage of the oplrite, thought o tread aloft the air, He iserable failure of the sttempt, and fall off thoe back of the train, His howls for help brought the conductor to the rear of the train, “'down brakes” was scunded, and the unfortunate scribe was arsisted aboard. The story of a subsequent misfortune which befell the youth jikbis sad blunder of stumbling by mistake @bu berth of » fat woman azd Dhis narrgw o ¥e from instant death, there < & A Propesed Examination of the Eyes of the Chiléren in the Public Schools, The Points of Information Which Bhould be Sought—Remedial Measures to be Buggested. Some time ago It may be remembered the matter of having Dr. Graddy make examination of the eyes of all the children now In the schools of Omaha, was brought up daring a sesslon of the school board. The matter Is still pending, not haviog been ssttled. The proposed examina- tion of the children’s eyes will be made without any charge. Meeting Dr, Graddy Iast night & r porter for the Ber questioned him as tu some of the polnta he sought to bring out in his examination. “There are several things with refer- onoce to which I shall examline the eyes of the scholars of our public schools. One, for instance, would be to determine the tate of refraction of the scholal eye—to see whether there was a lower power of refraction produclng oversight. edness or a greater power of) refraction, causing nearsightedness. Then between these two simple abnormal conditions, of course there are varylng degrees of re- fraction, producing vision more or less Inaccurate. “Then agaln the examination would be dlrected to determine the condition of the scholara’ eyes In the different grades wl h reference to the matter of refraction. If as we go higher among the classes we dlscover that there ls more and more nea:slghtedness, the inferance would be perfectly fair that application to study, or else cortaln hyglenic surroundings, pro- duces this nearsightedness. Having once established this fact It would be an easy matter to remedy thls evil by laylng down certaln rales with reference to the positlon of the pupil at his desk, the d tance between the eye and the book, the shapa of the desk, which, belng falthfally observed, would undoubtedly lessen this danger of Increasing nearsightedness as the student progressed In his studies. ‘Another point which would be made » matter of special observatlon is that of the senso of color among pupils. The ex- amination would show the condlton of the slght of each scholar with referance to color-blindness—to determine whether 1t was blind for more than one color— and if so, what ones—or whether 1t was slmply “blunted” to certain colors—that {s, unable to distinguish them resdily. “'Another very important matter to be determined by the examination is that of ocular disease among the school children of this clty. Tnere is a disease which 1 have no doubt exists to a certain extent in the schools here called ‘‘ophthalmia.” This malady s a dangerous one and not easily cured.” ““Is It contaglous?”’ “Yes, very contagious. I have notlced that one child sfflicted with the disease, may go into a room of say a hundred children, and if allowed to asgociate daily with them, will communicate the malady to every one.” ‘Do you suppose that it exists to any alarming extent among the puplls of the Omaha echools?” “That {s a matter to be determined by the examination. I know that the dls onse exlsts, as 1 have said before, to a certaln extent in our echools, for I have under my charge a number of cases now. This malady is undoubtedly the old Egyptian ophth almia, which has been spread over the world by emigration. It 1s easlly communicable from country to country, or from state to state, and I have no doubt that if the disease did not exist in Nebraska, one case of it would finally spread the malady over the state. No, it 1s notvery dangerous, but requlres tlme and patience to treat it. “These are a few of the things which would be determined by an examinstion. After the primary facts were discovered, the suggestion of remedial measures would fo?low. We could offer sugges- tlons as to the hyglenic sarroundings, conditions of light, etc., whichwould un- doubtedly lessen the dangers which threaten the eyesight of the average pu- pil in our public echoole, Some of the rooms In our school bulldings are very poorly lighted. For instance, a teacher made complalnt to me the other dlf of a school room In which she was employed, which I think she sald was 20 feet or more long, In which all the Jight was afforded by two windows in the end. Under ordinary conditlons, he sald, It was very diflicult for the pu- to read plainly, and without straln- ing their eyes. 1f such a conditlon of offairs exlsts, the remedy ought to be ap- plied immediately, For above all things a acholar, in his studles, must have plenty of light. “This matter of examination of the eyes of school children s no new thing. In Germany and other countries ot Eu- rope, the system was adopted several ears ago, and produced wonderfully ‘avorable resullt: In our eastern citles, too, the matter 1s receiving the attentlon which 1t urgently demands, and the re- forms suggested, in connection with the examination, are belng adopted.” — —— A Happy Home, The home of Mr. and Mrs, Pat. O'Oonnor, corner Sixth and Plerce streots, was an exceedingly happy one on Saturday last, It was on the occasion of a vlsit from thelr daughter (in rellglon Slater Mary Cassla) who has been absent from them for upwards of ten years. Sister Cassla at an early age took it as her choice to join the convent, and ls located in Chicsgo. She bas been grant- ed the privilege of coming to vlelt her parents and was accompanfed as far as Sloux City by the sister superlor, and from there to Omahs by the sister supe- rlor of that clty. Daring her brief stay here she was visited by numerous frlends and relatives, all of whom were over: joyed to see her. Bister Cassla left for her adopted home in Chicago on Mondasy, and on her return to Council Bluffs where she spent her early school days.
