THE DAILY BEF. JOUNCIL BLUFFS Thursday Morning, July 9. ESUBSCRIPTION BATES, ByCorrin = = = = = = = 90 centeper week BIMAl = | = = -mwwr-u MINOR MENTION. Relter, merchant tallor, for fine goode. Diphtheria ls causing great tronble at FEarling, Frod Slmpeon was yesterdsy fined by Juatics Schurz for assaulting Lee Saut. Tovitations are out for a lawn party at the rasidence of Mrs. George Keeline this evening. Harry Birkinbine has a new turn-ont on the stroets, 1t belng made for him by Hattenhaver. Mrs. Ellen Hill dled at her residence yosterday noon. The funeral will take place at 10 o’clock this morning. Thero has been a fine musical program arranged for the festival to be glven by the Harmony misslon this evening. H. G. Thurman, having sold his Inter- ost in the Villsca Revlew, has come to this oity to take charge of tho Railroad Reporter. John Short, the lower Broadway grocer, has taken his son Into partner- ahip and the new flrm Is now known as Short & Son. The office of Dr, Rice bas had Its in- terior greatly improved, and In its new style it must rank with the best and moat attractive officesin the clty. Minnie Foxley, for trying to decorate the upper portion of the city with car- mine, was yesterday fined enough to make a ten dollar bill look sickly, The new county jall Is fast approaching completion, 1t s being watched with much curlosity, as {t 1s the first rotary jall erected In this part of the country. George Ferguson, the younger, of thg Paclfic house, has eecured a pair of pralric dogs which he is keeping as pets until he can find out where their ears are. Aldarman Mynster proposes to donate his salary to the city to help pay for necessary expenses. The oclty has not reached such a deplorable financial con- dition as that yet. Charlie Walters has concluded that it 1s his fight after all, and that if he wants to hold on to the chieftalnship of the fire department he must wrestlo, and not|g.g leave it all to the councll. The hardware stores are to close at 7 o'clock every evening until the 1stof Oc- tober. The clerks of other stores are hoping the example will be followed by thelr employers, Oharles Hill's littlo child accldentally g0t the metal top of a perfumery bottle in its throat, and had a narrow escape from choking, Dr. Seybert being sum- moned just in time to pull out the ob- struction with a palr of forceps. James Nolan, who was killed while trying to board a train at Avoca, on the Fourth, used to be employed at the In- stitution for the deaf and dumb, and later on the farm of Mr. Rue, near the institution, He left here about two weeks sgo, The Ice cream parlors opened for the benefit of the Eplecopal church and con- ducted by the ladles has been runnming only fairly, so far as profits are concerned, and It s sald that the enterprise will be wound up with a New Eogland supper snd dance, This atternoon at 4 o’clock there Is to be & meeting of the city oouncil, as com- mittee of the whole, to conslder the mat- ter of a change ot the grade of Benton, Harrleon, and Second streets, and all property owners interested are lhvited to be present and examine the plans and offer their views, The plans for the new government building hers are now sald to be com- ploted, and that the bids will be adver- tlsed for on the 15th, It looks now that with the new court house golng right ahead, and the work startlng up on the Rovernment building, that the building boom will not all be pat over until another season, Yestordsy afternoon ata foew minates past 4 oclock as a number of people were passing the masontc temple a large piece of cornice off of the cupola of the bailding came down witha crash. Luck- lly no one was Injured, the cornloe falling to the middle of the street and landiog on the crossing. The gatherlng of teachers at the Bloomer bullding Increases in nambers ond io Interest. The teachers seem de- terminod toget all the good possible out of the hints and instruction being glven by tho instructors, and leaders, and desplto the heat good work ls heing done snd with more enthusiasm thsn would naturally be expected with the thermmoe- tex crawling out of the top story, A youog man pamed White, who isa pluwber aud who bas been in the employ of Luwis & Gilbert, has disappeared from the city, leaving his young wifo In & deli- cate coudion, and without money to pay her board at Mrs, Andereon’s, on uorth Maln street, where she fs now stopplog. White s said to have heart- leasly deserted the wife, and the clreum- stances ecom to bear out that theory of his sudden disippearance, The case is one which should attract the attention of thoae who are charitably iucllned, Yesterdsy mcralug a lot of paper from the Nonparell office was being burned in Ot sireet, and as thore scemed to be danges of the wiud blowlog some of i0g pleces nto the livery siables snd causing a blezs, the fire 'and dregged over the but some of the sowe the bur. ey {here, L sculderes T8 ;:;k {oto he rreex_» THE DAILY BEE--COUNCIL BLUFFS,THURSDAY, JULY 9, 1885, burning pleces were then carrled by the wind agalnst a lot of straw and manare, which had been dumped along the bank, and this pile caught on fire, requiring the servioes of the fire department to get It under subjection, and to prevent further danger. The olty has commenced & suit sgales’ J. T. Stewart and the Rock Island raill way to settle the matter of the right of way over certaln property to be used In making the sewer ditch, It seems that in 1876 the olty planned to have the orerk straightened, and needing the right of way across ground owned by the Rock Island rallway, negotiated for the same, the price belng $900, but Mr. Stewart being anxious to have the Improvement made agreed to secure the right of way for 700 and the councll told him to do so, but afterwards the plan was abandoned. Stewart brought sult, and racovered about $1,300, and the matter has been lylog dormant until recently, when the city reviving the project finds that the right-of-way Is stlll clalmed by the Rock Island. This suit Ia to compel the Rock Island ratlway to glve the right-of-way, and to compel Mr. Stewart to secure It and settle for it, BUOKLING ON THE.ARMOUR The Present Posumaster to b.o Te- tained for the FPresent and Other Claims Rejected. The news that the present struggle for the postoffice hae been settled by the decislon to leave the present postmaster, Phil Armour, In possesslon of the office, causes much satlsfaction among business men of both parties. The fight between Wells Cook and Tom Bowman has got to be a bitter one, Bowman being raid to heve gone so far as to attack the personal reputatlon of Mr. Cook, in his despera- tlon. When It thus became a con- test as to which could say the meanest things of the other, the authorlties at Washington promptly declded that It was beet to let the pres- ent postmaster remain, there belng no just cause for his mmuvnl It is con- ceded that Armour has done more for the service, and to better the office, than 7 one who has ever held the position, nd having been connected with the postoffice buslness ever since boyhood, it will be hard work to find a succes: who can do as well with the office as he. The declslon to let mattors remaln as at present is caused, evidently, from the difficulty the authoritles have In deciding the quarrel between tbe two aspirants, rather than nng partlcalar love for Ar- mour, but the business men wlll be satls. ———— Shipments of Stock, The following are the latest shipments of stock from the yards: Felt, 1 car horses, 20 head, Ewing, Neb., via Sioux City. The Old Bite to be Retaiued, The delay In the building of the new court house has caueed no little stir, and the proposed change of locatlon, while generally thought to be a sort of blaff on the part of the county board, caused still more of a atir. It ls a matter of con- gratalation that the county board has declded to have no farther delaysor talk, but to proceed with the bullding. A special meeting of the county board Is to becalled at an early date for the pur- pose of advertlsing for blds for the construction of the bullding, 1t being conceded that In regard to sewerage the cliy will do its part as soon as possi- ble, and that nothing can be galned by farther delay, while much can be and will be lost by such delay. The building oan have its foundations so laid that the sewerage connections can be made after. wards, and by the tlme the building is ready for occupaucy the sewer will be done. The greatest trouble s in regard to the new jall, for that will soon be done, and there is no way provlded for sewering that, and the jall must be occapled at once, for the prisoners now confined In the old jail under the court house must be removed before that bullding can be torn away to make room for the mew court house, Some way wlill be found out of that dilemma however, and the work will proceed so far as to have the foundations Iald thls fall. e Read Judd & Smith's offer of $1,000 roward in another column, ——— Hanthorn sells wood at hls feed store. e —— Again Pat Of A telegram from Des Moines says that the declsion in the Aylesworth.Loof- bourow judiclal contest was agaln post- poned yesterday, It going over now un- til the 18th. The people will soon be- lleve this case bas got into the same pigeon hole as the saloon injunction cages, and wlll reach an end some time in the future, but so far away that all now concerned will be beyond an earthly appeal. They were nicely dressed, acd sat near to the door in the rear of the car. The gentleman went out on the front platform to smoke. The ladies soon were talking In a lively manner. The conductor listened to the conve; on. The gentleman finlshed his cigar and walked to the rear plat- fo ay; did you see those three ladles talking,” sald the conductor, pointing to the ladies. ““Yes,” replled the gentloman., “Well, 1t would make a brass monkey laugh to hear them.” “Yes}” “One of them—that one with a rose in her bosom—Is tellicg a yara.” “Yen]” i ““You can bet your life,” sald the con- ductor. “What Is the ysrn?’ asked the pas. senger. “She's bann lately marrled.” *‘She has?”’ "Yeu, and she Is telling of her exper- fence.” “‘She 187" “‘Yes, and she says she has a husband who is afrald to say boo.” “‘You don’t say?”’ ““Yes, I do; and she says that she makes him wash the dishes.” “‘She does?” *‘Yes, and make the bed.” *‘Are you certain she sald that?” ‘‘Yes, [ am certain of it.
