8 TRE DAILY Moniay Morniag, *'16-- 109th--'85.” The “Glorions Fonrtt” Appropriately Observed in Omaka. BEE July 6. =3 The Roar of the Cannon and the Orack of the Firecracker Heard in the Land. The Doings in Omaha~The Exeroises at Jefferson Equare and Gen- eral Notes About the Oity, THE EAGLE SOiRS, The “‘Glorlous Fourth” has come and gone The one hundred and ninth snniver pary of our countrys Independence was celebrated and all natara smiles upon the ncene, The proud old eagle dipped his wings in the waters of the Atlantic and with a grand sweep soared across the con- tlnent until he alighted upon the sands of the Pacific coast. All along the line he was urged on by the firlng of cannon, and waving of flags, while a shout weat up from 50,000,000 throats in honor of the land all love 8o well. It has been many yoara slnce Omaha enjoyed what might rightly be called a celebration, and although the celebration of to-day wasonly talked of a few days since, {t has 8o far proven a greater eumo- cess than the most sanguine had dared to hope for. It was ushered In by the firing of cannons, crack of revolvers and the pesky firecrackors in the hands of smsll boys. The day dawned bright and clear and finer weather for the Fourth could not be asked for. The dust, which had become a great nnisance during the past fow days, had boeu laid by the cool and rafroshing shower last evenlng making it mora pleasant than for several days past, The sireets put on a heliday appear- ance. Many of tha business houses were decorated with stars and stripes, while others were almont hidden by boughs gath- ered from the surrounding forests, Every- body's face was decorated with thelx sweetest smiles, and everybody scemed correrpondingly heppy. And why not? Fourth of July only comes once a year, and is the signal for casting asids all care and sorrow and entering heartily into the festlvities of the day, made sacred to the heart of every true Amer!can by thesiga- ing of the document 109 years ago, which eaid to all nations this is the land of the free, the true and tho brave. THE PROCESSION, By 9 o’clock Douglas street began to assume an animated and interesting ap- pearance. Rattle and roar created wild enthuslasm on all sides and the small boy waa In his most abandon element. As old Sol mounted into the zenith and poured forth his blazing rays, swelterlng throngs perepiring men, women and chil- dren, rushed hither and thither in quest of elevation or convenient polnt from which to vlew the grand spectacle, which for proportlons, gorgeous splendor and nuccessful consumation has never had its equal in the majesctic and lovely gate city. By ten oclock the various military and clvlc bodles commenced to move about, and complete preparatlons for forming the parade, which took up the line of march, as pre- viously arranged, promptly on time. Marsha! Smythe and his valliant aides were active and thorough in the discharge of thelr duties and overything worked charmingly. Good feeling, hearty cheer and perfect acqulescence on the part of big, little, old and young, were marked features of the early ecencs. Promptly on the prick of the hour des- ignated, the procession formed. It moved down Douglas street In the tollowing order and prerented a most magnificent spectacle: Firat. City Marshal Cummings and a platoon of thirty policemen. Second. Fourth Infantry military band from Fort Omaha. Third, Two compavies of the Fourth U. 8. Infentry from Fort Otaahs. Fourth. One sectlon of battery ‘‘B” from Fort Omaha. Fifth, The mayor, olty offislals, orators of the day and press reprasentatives, in carrisgos. Sixth, Musical Ualon band and Turner society. Seventh. Uanlon Paclfic band and As- sistant Chief Fira Marshal Galligan in his wagon, Eighth, Fire departments Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4 and ths hook and ladd.r com- pany. Ninth. Colored band and Omaha bicy- cla club, Tenth, Smyth's dram corps, the mules brigade and cow boys. Eleventh, Pls‘oon of dlstrlct telegraph mestenger boya, Tweltth, Wagons bearing ropresenta- tives of the varlous branches of industry. Thirteenth, Cltizens in carsinges and on foot, The processlon moved down ' Douglas streot to Ninth, en Nianth to Farnam, on Farnam to Sixteenth, on Sixteenth to Burt, thence connter march to Jefferson Square where tho oratorical exer- clses wera held, Al along the line of march great crowds of people witnessed the grand pigeant, lflg everywhere evidences of tno mort approving nature greeted the varled and attractive features of the procession, Inummerable flags of the glorious old union, tipped beck in graceful waves thelr loyal weleome to both elt!zsn and soldier, and the smell of burning powder, without which a Fourth of July is mo- notonously incomplete, added fus quota of enthusiasm to the oceasion, The police, the military and the clvie sceoletlcs fn thelr flashing uniforms, pre- cented a very beautiful sight, At 11 o’clock the marchleg was concluded, aud very quickly Jefferson Square and ths surrounding streets were & litersl ses of lviog humanity crowded in to lsten to the eloquesce of thess genilemen who bad been eclected us crators of the duy. THE SPEAKIN From the grand stand in Jeffercon rquare & most anlmated sight was pre- geated to view, Mayor James E Boyd preatded and opened the ora‘orical flovd gater. His epoech, however, was short, s {t necersartly had to be, becausa all the spoakers were lwited to fiva minates each. Moyor Boyd, af era few prelim- tnsry remarks, eaid: #0n the 4th cay of July, 1776, the cilebrated declarstion of ludependen was sdopted by all the states oxcept Now York, whizh refused to vote, bus on the 9:h ey of Jaly the New York conven tion adopted it snd it thus bzc:me the unavimous declarstion of the thir esu United States of Amorica,” } The Kourth of July, 177¢, was the birth-day of the American repablic end wver sizce ‘hat tima this Jaad has been & home of the oppressed of sll pations, There is no other land llke unto it, and it oannot be better described than it has bsen by Halleck: ““Tis & rough land of earth and stone and troe, Where breathes no castled lord, or cabin'd slave, Where thoughts and tongues, and hands are bold and free, And friends will find s welcome, foes & grave, And where none kneel save when to heaven they pray, Not even then unless in their own way,” It should have been stated that Gen- oral 0. O. Howard delivered the prayer, and asked for divine blesslng, on all the peoples and the Institutions of these United States. The declaration of Independence was eloquently read by Justice Bartlett, Other short speeches wers made by Ex-Mayor O. 8, Chase, Mr, Edward HRosewater, of the Bee and Mr, Allen Root. Mr. Chase devoted hlmeelf to romine scenscs of the late war and the great privileges that the people of this coantry have been permlitted to enjoy, by reason of the event, which made it possible for them to celobrate on the Fourth of July. Mr. Rosewater comp'imented and con- gratulated the people of Omaka upon the interest thay had shown In the celobra- tlonand the brilllant success which the Impromptu effort of the committee to give us a proper and fittlng recognition of the day had met with., The grand parade shows thelr eympathy and the enthualasm _thelr interest 1In the great day. Mr. Rosewater related sev- eral past Fourth of July Incldents in Omahs, {and especlally the Bee balloon calebration of ten years ago, when Prof. John H. Plerce proposed to strike an uppor current of air and float away to the Black Hills, Bat the bal- loon got atubbora and wouldn’t go—not even after Plerco and his wife, who was goirg with him, had taken farewell leave of tholr frlends and gotten into the car. THE RACING AND OTHER THINGS, Douglas street has never ince it be- came & public thoroughfare presented such a elght ar was witnessed on its broad smooth wurface, Satarday after- noon, It seemed that all the 60,000 peop'e in Omah wera packed, jammed and crowded in between Ninth and Fifteenth strests on Douglas, The Masleal Union band, millions of fira crackers, and hoats of emall boys farnished music for ths oc. casion, The firat specially was a greased pels, fifteen feet high, with several vslu- able prosents dangling at its top, which were offered to whoever should climb up snd gt thom. Twenty-five or thirty pereons, mostly, venturesome boys made desperate attempts, bat they sll failed and at a late hour the prizes had not been secured. The greased plg race amounted to very little. It was utterly impossible to get a place large enough in the street for a plg to ran. Next came the contest on bleycles, with four entries, viz: John Hitchcock of Omaha, and J. G. Nichols of Minne- apolls, In the first race; T. A. Blackmore snd Perry Badolett In the second race. The first was won by Hitchcock, and the second by Blackmore. Their prizos were gold badges. The szconds were awarded silver badgesr. A foot race wlith six contestanta created conslderable interest and some betting. Three prizes of §5, $3, and $2 had been offered. They were taken by Frank Coudrons, first; Harry Wheeler, second, and Sam Lewls, third. Followlng the foot race came a sack race, and in that Harry Purdy won the first prize of $3; Victor Ducrozs the ses- (S:llm of $2, and Oharley Martin the third, The sport was finaliy closed with a con- test at long distanca base ball throwing, in which $10 had bzen offered in prizes— 85 to the first, $3 to the second, and $2 to the third. These priz:s were secured by F. A. Graat, J. Hart and A. C. Frey. Acsistant Marshal Butler announced that the fireworks would be szen at Jef- ferson square in the evening, and the great crowd dispersed. A LIVELY EVENT. The Fourth of July celebration In Omaha did wind up in a blaze of glory and no mistake. A grander, unexpected and not down on the bills event has sel- dom if ever been wltnessed. The an- nouncement of fire works was sufficlent to crowd Jefferson square and the streets around it with thousands of people, and from a high stand in the center tho pyro- technics were ‘‘let ; off” Mat- ters moved along charmingly end the fiery talled rockets that coursed thelr way through heaven's dark dome had created expressiors of great admlration from those who wlit- nessed the epectacle. In the psrk psople wero seated on the grass thick as they could be, and every inch of the fence was occupied, while the oppoalte sidewalks and housetops were lined, When the display was ebout half through 1he wlld- est scene of the day ocenrred. The bal- ance of the fireworks, which laid in a pile on ong eorner of the stand, were Ignited by sparks from a spin‘wheel, and all exploded at once Sky rockets, romen candles, balls cf fire, blazing roseats, and paraschutes went whizaing, and whirling, and roarinz through the crowd, which by this time was scattering like scared sheep In every direction. Women screamed, children crled, and men yelled, Immense volames of red, white and blue emoke and flame ehot heavenward from ths soaffolding shed- ding a most swlully wierd and highly fantastic light o'er the panicky and pan- domoziac ecane. But fortunately not a single person, except Chlef Butler who had one hand burned slightly, recelved an iojury. Many, however, had very narrow escapes. The band played “‘Yankee Doodle,” a mighty yell burat forth from the crowd, and the great celebration was brought to an end. NOTES OF THE DAY, Firccrackers and torpedos premium Saturday, ‘Who wouldn’t be an American on the “Gloricus Fourthi” Col Smythe and hisdrum corps parad- e?f uatll the last cracker had been firel off, Many of the maloou fronts were dec)- rated with green boughs from the neigh- borlng forests, The mayor and citycounsil nted a fice appearance as they rolled along In their carriages. The fire depirtment boys at No, 3 opgine house bad a display of fire works all to themselves. Did you eee Col. Smythe? Of course you dif; be was the observed of all ob servers and looked like an old voteran. Fonr brass bands snd a dram corps fornizhed the usio for the procession and 1t was ftirat class in every particular too, Taellv.ry men cf the city farnished the csrelazes free of cherze. Real clever in thew, wasn't it. There alu't any flles on thelr backs, Tae Fourth infantry band 1s a really fine musical organization and are to ba wero ab a THE DA complimented upon the excellent music farnished Satardsy. A large crowd of people gathered at the pnfi to hoar the speeches, notwith- standing the fact that the rays of the sun were almost acorching. Chief Butler looked well In a ssddle, By the way why woulda’t it be a good scheme for him to have a saddl horse on which to attend all fires? Very fow disturbances } ocsarred daring the day, a fact which Is somewhat romarkable, when the large crowd is taken into consideration, Julius Meyer was the nobblest looking marshal of them all, The only !trouble with Jallus was his hablt of seeking the ehade whenever an opportunity presented Itselt, An empty carrlage In the procession attracted considerable attention on_ the suggention of somebody that it had been engaged for the occaslon by Smith, the departed dry goods man, Mont of the stores werc closed and the clerks have been permitted to enjoy an old time celebration, They can retarn to thelr dutles Monday morning with light hearts and a greater regard for thelr employers. The beer flowed like water Saturday, many a man had his tank full and ran- ning over before noontime. Why are these things thuely? Because many persons consider this the only way to show thelr patriotism, The fire boys outdone themselves in decorating thelr hose carts and the hook and ladder wagons. They all pre- sonted a beauntlfal appearance and the hoys are to be complimented for their labor and the excellent taste dleplayed. Theburletque Salvation army in the parade was & base libel upon ths old Salvationists, for who ever heard of a gaod, true eoldier in the Salvation army drinking beer—that e, in broad day light and In the sirect a’ that. They don’t do it thls sesson. Messra, Colpetzar, Troxsll, Thurston, Kountze and W, V, Morse gave private displays of ficowcrks from their resi- dences Saturday tbat were greatly ad- mired. Several large paper balloons were sant up and esiled away through the alr looking like balls of fire, Ono of the fine features of the par. ade waa the artillery and Infantry from the fort, The thanks of the community are due Generals Howard and Carlin for permitting the eoldlers to take part in the parade, for this ome thing helpad as much as any other to mske the celebra- tlon a success. If anyone thinks that Omaba iz not populated with as fine looking ladles, both young, middls aged and old, as any city in this country they ehould have been upon the streets Saturdsy and seen thoneands of Omsha ladies who were out to witness the parade. There are many handsome ladles hers, a fact which can- not be denied. Did you ever before see as fine a pro— cession’ in Omaha as the one to-day? Wasn't it just grand? Why, Omaha can get up a bigger celebration in one week than most clties of her sizy canina month, Omaha never does things by halves, but every person just goea into 1t body and soul and of course it couldn’t be anything short of a grand succees. Several small accidents were reported. Mr. Coryell had aplece of torpedo tin driven into ope of his legs, acd Mr, Schwalenberg, of the Commerclal Na- tional bank, was struck by a rocket. Walter Copeland had his face badly scorched by an explosion of fire crackers, and » lay, whose name could not be learned, suftured the agony of dlscovering that her riwe eilk drees had a large ho'e burned in if. —— Nebraska Caltivator and Housckeeper For July, Among the contents cf this popular farm and household favorite, the Ne. braska Cultivator and Housekeeper, published at Omaha, are ths following: The date and locatlon of all Nebraskas dlstrict aud county fairs, with name and address of president and secretsry; dates clalmed for cattle sales in varlous parts of the Urited States; best feed for young pigs; flatulent cclle in horses; helpful hints for the housekeeper; general rules for canning all kinds of fruits; recipes for making cakes, pies and puddings; cheap fancy work for country homss; in- strucidons to beginners in raising bees, how to Induce hens to lay, breeds and familics of live atock, how to pre- sorve work and carriage harness, causes of cholera Infantum, cutting and curing grasses for hay, the Omsha stock yards and general agricultural and live stock notes.
