One of the prettiest sights on the Fourth was the view from the bluffs looking toward Omaha, the lights of that city being still forther enlivened by the sight of the hundreds of rockets, the red ligts, the candles and balloons, and other bits of pyrotechnlcs, seen at even this distanca. There has been a flag on the ataff of the clty jail switching day and night, In storm and out of storm, until ft has been pretty well beat out, but when the Fourth came, and flags were the order of the dsy, the flag- ataff was as bare as the leg of an ‘‘Adam- less Eden” show. Nick Kuhl, who formerly kept the St. Joe house here, and who some months ago moved to Neoga, not far from the Institntion for the deaf and dumb, dled at his home thers Friday night, of con- sumption, He leaves a wife and four children. The funeral took place yester- day afternoon from the Cathollc church here, and was quite largely attended. About a hundred persons indulged in a joyous plenic on the Fourth at Island Park, the new resort on the Kansas Clty about five miles from the clty. The plc- nlec was for the employes of that road, and thelr familles, Mr. Lucas, near whose place the party gathered, was very kind in hls treatment of the pic- nickors, as the superintendent of the dl- vislon generously provided the transpor- tation, At an early hour yesterdsy morning there was an alarm of fire caused by one of the beds at the Coy houee being accl- dentally set on fire by one of the lodgers. Oae of the enjoyable fea- tures of the day was the racing. There was & gentlemens’ driving race, In which the entries conslated of M. Weatherbee’s sorrel mare, Prof. Smith’s “‘Electric Belt,” M. F. Rohrer & Bro.’s “‘Flicker,” and W, Ed Elam’s ““Viva.” The score was: Sorrel mare, 2 2; Elec- tric Belt, 1 1; Flicker, 3 3; Viva, 4 4; Time, 3:17, 3:16, The other race was for the three min- ute class. The firat three horses named in the following score were from the ata- bles on the track, and the fourth was an Omaha horee, Grasshopper, 1 1 3 1; Julius, 2 3 4 4; Ellen Gift, 3 2 2 3; Littlo Ben, 4 4 1 2. The viotim was a young man named Wililsm Maloney, and he came to his death by belng hit by a passing traln, Little could b learfled about the young man except from some articlos found on his person, From these It appoared that his name was as above given, It appearing on the fly-leaf of a bible given to him by Miss Clifford, of Bristol, England. There were a number of calllng cards, evidently of some of his English friends, and a letter full cf affectionate words from Belle Jones, and dated Exeoter, Neb. It seems from this that he had been at work ona farm In tha part of the country.% Ther was 1o money on his person, and he was barefooted and poorly clothed, It seems that he had traveled far on foot, hls feet being evidently sore from t.nval, and he was seon leaving Underwood on foot about noon. It eppears that he sat down on the brldge about two and a half miles from there, and fell asleep, and was strack by a passing traln, belog rolled over and over along the tlmbers for twenty feet or so, he belng terribly mangled.
