H. Bostwick and wife, of Hastings, are guests at the Paxton. Schultz about 8 year and a half or two years ago in New York state, and there married her, She was a widow and had some little money left her in the way of life Insurance by her first husband. Shortly after the wedding the couple moved to Omaha, renting a house at 805 Harney street, where they have since lived, Everything went smoothly and happlly, and apparently there wss not the slightest element of discord in the relatlons of the two. Mr. Schaltz has been, since here,a hardworking and sober man, while Mra. 8. has faithfully dis- charged her duties as a loving and obe- dient wife. On Sunday last Mr. S, contrary to his usual habit spent a great portion of the day awsy from home, maklng several mysterlous visits on errands which he did not explain, That night he took Mra. Shultz to the Stadt theatre. Be- tween one of the acts he left his wife, as he sald, to_procure refreshment in the form of a glass cf beer. He never re- turned. Mrs. Schallz, after waiting fora reason- able length of time the arrival of her epouse, went home. There she discov- ered evidence which led her to belleye that her husband had deserted her. He had taken with him some $600 In money belonglng to her, besides other valuable papers and effects. The case has been placed in the hands of Detective Emery, who is now working upon it with good prospects of success. One Import- ant clue was turned up yesterdsy in the form of a lotter written from the pension persons congregated at the scene of ex- citement. They found the man dead, with an ugly, flash-torn powder-burned hole through his head, and on the ground near by laid a revolver, which told the whole story. An Investigation revealed the unfortunate man’s name to be Mta- thias Betz, an old citizen of Omaha, who, from angulsh of misfortune, dissipation and depression, had quletly stolen out from among frlends and down town ex- cltement to commit suiclde. Coroner Drexel was at once notlified and soon ar- rived where the body still lay and he fm- medlately held an inquest, with the fol- lowing gentlemen suwmoned to act as jurors: Elija Gish, foreman; Arthur C. Jones, F. A. Fuller, H. Heth, T. C. Stevens and George Holman. After hearing the testimony of several wit- nesses they rendered a verdiot to the effect that deceased had come to his death from a gunshot wound in the head, the weapon having been fired deliber- ately and purposely by his own hand. To be certain of accomplishing the deed Betz had placed the muzzle of the revol- ver In his mouth and death resulted al- most instantly. At the conclusion of the Inquest the body was removed to Drexel & Maul's undertaking establishment, where it was dressed and placed in a neat coffin for burlal. It will be taken charge of bythe G.
