/ THE DAILY BEE-=MONDAY, JUNE 22. 1885, (ol e ———— LINGOLN. Freaks of the Honr About ibe Staty’ Headquarters, Gera Pulls OF the Mask as a Rail- road Qommiesioner, Ontrages Against the Poor in County Asscssments—Dawes Slaps at the Veterans, Reported by The Brr's Bureau Lixcouy, Neb.,, June 21.—Gere, the head and front of the eailroad commls. alon, In his great effort of how-not-to-do- 1t announces that will take no notice of charges of exorbilant freight rates In caees which occurred at dates previous to the Gth of June 1885, the date of the organization of the board. Of course no one who knows Gere regards the rail- road commission as anything but a screaming farce, but this first step adds glare cf light to theproposed line of de- fonse to be made by the raiiroadsthrongh thelr commission. Gere has always In- slsted that there were no cases of unju discrimination in this state and now fear- Ing he might hear of a few thourand ca:es from the lips of men whom railroads have rulned by these very acts, the wily capper cuta off their voices by a decla tlon that they will not go back of the date of the organizatlon of the board, Noth. Ing more shameful than the appointment of Gere could be mentioned and no rul- Ing of tho bosrd more flagrantly outra- g;uul then this could be thought of hom the _Gods destroy they first make mad, WHERE FAIR DEALING 5 Ex Senator Reynolds, of Batler coun- ty, by circular, and speclal invitation of Senator Manderson, will appear before the inter-state commerce committee of the United Staten sanate, which bigins session in Omahs Moaday. and wlii glve to that comwitts some plain facts. The senator has studlod the railroad problem quite closely, and is an earnest advocate for the people as against the encroach- ments of all corporations, At a statlon on the main llne of the Union Pacific rallway ho was aliowed to exsmine tho tlcket re: fster, and took the 18th day of June, 1884, and the tame day of 1885, and by comparleon found that the ticket salee, in dollara and cents, were 11 per ceut greater in 1885 than in 1884, thus showlng that the raduction in fare which the people have so loudly ssked for, is not only to thelr Interest, but the re- celpts to the railaoads ars actually in creased, and 80 it will be with freights as soon a8 the people can secure a legie— ture who are sufficlently independent of the corporations togive them thelr rights, which have In this state so long been held in the interests of the corporatlons. THE GOVERNOR AND THE VETERANS. Last wiater the leglelature passed a jolnt resolution that in drawing Nebras- ka's quoto of arms and equipments the governor should draw 200 hospilal tonts for tho use of the militia, and that the governor might allow the use of such tents at the rzuntons of old soldlers in this state. The resolution was approved by the governor on the Gth of March, and can be found in the session laws of 1885, pages 437 and 438. It s well known the grand army organizition is not wealthy, neither does it hold thete reunlors for the purpozo of eecumulating money, but as a public social gathering, in which nearly every citizen of the state and many many from other states are intérésted, and it was with'thls idea the leglalature passed this resolution, In beginning preparations for the re- uanfon which cccurs next September the reunlon commiltee requested the governor to make the requisition a3 authorlzed in the resolu- tlon, but the governor flatly refused do- Ing 8o, prefering to draw a few old rifles of 50-callbre and cartridge boxe for th d, (litla wh hy 11 ziveo. That they canusa Theso houpital wall| And Beal Estate Mortgages i ™ tents ciu be drawn from the government for $12,00 each, while the same tent would cost the grand army, to by them, $36 00 esch, besides the organization in ita prezent condition s not able to buy them, The governor not only refuses to astist In procuring tents fcr the reunfon next fall but refuses to comply with the joint resolution of the leglslature even aftor ko approved the same. OUTRAGES IN ASS¥SSMENTS, It {s no wonder that the laboring and country people cry out against extortion and burdensome taxation when business blocks and grand palaces are assessed at about what the rent for one year will bring. The clty boasts of its enterprise and brilllant business traneactions and then robs the poor by ubjast dizcrimina- tlon in assessing not only realty but per- sonal property. A short time alnce the Bk notleed three promioent buildiogs ot the city where the asterement was about one-tenth of the value, Thero, are etill many othors, for Instance the first na- tlonal bank building way aesessed to John Fitzgerald for $06,000 while the lower floor of cne-half of the bulldiog renta for $2,000 p:r snnum, The property would be cheap a: $60,000. In the way of personal property is the wholeeale grocery house of Raymond Bros & COo., who earry a stock of from $80,000 to . $100,000 assested at $0,000, and the wholesale stock of Plummer, Perry & Co., who carry a stock of from $60,000 to $80,000, asseaced at 88,000, while the poor man's household eff¢ots and the firmer's graln and stock are aseesied at from on third to one-fourth of its entire value.
