THE DAILY BEE- -=-SATURDAY, JUNE 20. 1885, LINGOLN. Tncidents of the Day at 1he Capital of the State, Musical People Base Great Hopes on the Festival, The Session Laws at Last Come Out ~Theatricals for Children ~Personal, AT THE OAPITAL, GENERAL NOTES. Reported by The Bre's Bureau Lixcony, Neb., June 19 —The Sang- gerfest building 1s completed, and is now belng seated and decorated. Four thous- and chrirs will be placed In the bullding, besides many other seats. Tho recent raln fully tested the roof and it proved water- proof. There is no doubt this will be grandest musical festival ever held in the northwest, The grand mixed ckerus will conslat of several hundred tralned musi- cal voloes, and will be well worth 'the effort and expense it takes to hear it. The badges for the different societies have aarlved {and will be] presented to the organizations upon their arrival Tuesday. Several fine arches will be erected and it Is hoped the business men will take sufficlent Interest to likerally decorate thetr bulldings that the visitors will feel that they are not only wel- comed by the societles here but by the business interests of this enter- prising clty, remembering that upon thls oocasion the place wlll, to a great extent, represent Its grand commonwealth. t is currently reported that no money was appropriated out of any funds with which to pay the veterlnary surgeon, the new officer which the law created. The governor has declded to create no sur- geon. Truly loyal and brave democrats here are stlll hopeful that the government wheel of fortune may drop an office in ithelr lap, though they are not especlally enocouraged, as there do not seem to have been many offenclve partisans in this statate under President Arthar. J. J. Koun has drawn the plans for an -elegant resldence for Major Owen, the erection of which will begin in a few days. “‘Protty Bobby Shafto,” which is to be played here on Mondsy evening, was written by Mrs. H. D. Pltman and ar- ranged by Pref. Jacob A. Mahler, who has charge of the play here. It is espe- oially for children, 1s in two acts, com- prised of original dances, ballets and tableaux. It is quite new, ita first rep- resentatlon belng In Pickwick theatre at 8t. Louls on the 224 of May, 1885, and was favorably received. It was produced here once before to a crowded house. The costumes ave all new and were made In Bt Louis. la addition to the cast heroe given, about filty children from the kindergarten achool will take part. The following is the principal castand portion of the progeamme: Bobby Shafio, Mles Fay Marshall; Nids, sailor’s laes, Miss Rachael Brock; Gipsy (ueen, Jose- phine Lottridge; Meney, Eleanor Ray- mond; Mother Goose, Helen Jones. Minule Gaylord will slng ¢ Climbing Up the Golden Statra,” *‘ Peek-a-boo,” and the see-saw waltz; Bertie Burr—3ong and dance, eallor’s hornp!pe, sond and dance; Bertie Burr—La Favorite; Grace Burr— La Pas_Senl; Rachael Brosk—OChinese dance; Oliver and Harry Lansing— high- land fling; about twenty-five other chil- dren under the Immediate instruction of the professor will take patt, in addition to the kindergarten school. The secretary of state has presented the Bek's correspondent with s cowy of the seeaton laws of 1885. 1tis full sheep binding, of 472 pages, It is a well printed volume and a credit to the state printer. The cost to the state is 65 conts por volume, and the total issue ia 4,000 volames, Now that the attorney-gineral has in- terviewed the chief sinner among the delinquents to the state on the insane tax—the Douglas county commlssioners— the smaller delinquents had better take notice, and govern themselves accord- ingly, and as the attorney-general cer- tainly means to collect” that tax 1t would be well if they have any doubt aboat the law to refer to Nebraska Re- porte, 16th volume, pages 123 and 136, Burlington & Missour! railroad ve. Saunders couaty, and Burlington & Miesouri railcond va. Cass coanty. The no'ice about the secretaries of the railroad commission going t> Spirlt Lake rather headed the boys off, and a portion of them have returned to Lincoli pre- d to do business. The attorney general is the orator of the day at the grand lodge of free and acospted masons at Omaha next week. The Hon. 8. J. Alexauder starts for Omaha this morning to change the da of the appearance of Bobby Shanto Monday, June 29, The secretary of state starts for Chi. osgo this morning on a business trip, Among the days prominent arrivals were ‘Willlam P, Helling, Aurora; Lieutenant-Governor Shedd, Ashland ; F. BAILWAY MATTERS. 0 Sale of the Hestings & Grand. Island for $251,000—~Other Notes of Interest, The H astings & Grand Islandbranch of rhe St, Joreph & Western roilroad was sold yesterday in this city, by the master in chauncery, Mr. J. N, Strlchler, of Topeka, and brought the sum of $251,- 000. The line !s but twenty-five miles long, and had been appraised at §15,000 per mile, About 10 o'clock yesterday mornng a small ocollectlon of calm and dignified looklrg geatlemen sicod around the north entrance to the postof- fice, and when Mer, Strickler avnounced that he offerd the property in question for sale, there was just one bld made and that bld came imm: purchiating commitlee, tent out from New York by the stockholders to take It lo. This comwmittes consisted of Messrs, Fraucis K, Pevdlston, James H, Benedic', and Isase H, Browale, the lat: ter gentleman belng from Boston. Thete same gentlomen also bid In the St. Jos- eph & Western road at Topeka about ten days ago, thus closing out what has long been an sggravated subject of litigation and tronble, The property now will be transferred to on entirely new organization named the Grand Island & Merysville company, with directora for the ensning year as followi James H. Benedict, Franols K. Pen- dleton, 8. L. Parlsh, and C. B, Benedlet, of New York; George W. Hall, J. W. Griffith, and Thomas M. Orr, of Omaha. They are to meet at New York on the 22d Instant and thers elect the officers. The sale was made to satlsfy a mort- gage or deed of trust for $375,000 held against the road by Jay Gould and Amos H. Oarlif. Of the purchase amount only £3,336.40 was pald Into the court and this was ordered to be divided In the followlng fands: Appraiser’s foes, Advertising. Clerk of court.... Solicitor of complai Special master’s fees. . The amounts of deficiency due are follows: Principal due by decree. . Interest on same to date. penses have n p the sum remaining is to be applied towards llquidating the bonded indebtedness of the road. It is understood that under its new management the rosd fs to be operated in connection with the Unlon Pacifio. The North Platte Telegraph gives J. H. McConnell, who comes to Omaha as master mechaoic for the Nebraska dlvi- sion of the Union Pacific road, a very nice send off, and among other things says: Thirteen years ago last Friday Mr. McConnell arzived in North Platte, and four days later he recelved h's appoint- ment a3 master mechsnic of the Unlon Paclfic shops here. Though small as compared with their present extent, the shops then werethe biggest part of North Platte. To-day the shops are the second In extent on the line of the road and the first In economy of doing work, and North Platte 1s grown into & olly mo fair that Mr. Me. Connell regrots very much to leave it. In the growth of our clty, his Inflaence has been as potentas In the growth of the shopr. Always on hand, with a finger In every ple, “Little Joe,” as many like to call him, has been a power in North Plavte. The Telegraph regrots .o see him go, and never In the history of the shops was there a timo when more of the men in his employ would joln in this regret than now. The general manager's private car, of the Burlington & Missourl in Nebraska, was sent to Chicago last evening after Mr. Hoadley. P. H. Now York THE COLERIDGE CRIMINALS. 8 A Targe Bach of Them Arrested and Bons, Placed Under e Active Work of Detective J, J, Neligh and his Men, of the Western that Outrage is Rovenged, Association, to see The Colerldge postoffice outrage, that attracted so much attentlon three or four weeks ago, is still ono of the greatest sensations in Nebraska, The rioters, who at that time were directly connacted with an attack made upou Me. Pollack, the postmasicr, are now in a fair way to pay a penalty that justice will demand of them, To glve the particulars, the Cedar County Nonparlel, of recont date, 88, We have been aware of the fact that for weeks Chlef J. J. Neligh, of the Western detective agency, of Omaha, with from two to six able asslstants, have been cirefally working over every inch of the ground. They have worked as only shrewd detectives know how to work, and they have accumulated ‘‘bush- ela” of evidence very bad for all who par- tlcipated in the riot, There are some {mplicated whom we wish were not, and we believe they were drawn into it through misunderstanding and misrepre— tontations Last Sunday night a cyclone struck the town of Coleridge and demolished con: siderable property, and the people had ecarcely got throngh trembling when on Monday afternoon just before train time a tornado in the ®hape of the Western detective agency, togather with Sherlff Asbre and Constable Wallace of thls place, swapt down on the town and gob- Dled i J. B, Martin, Henry Martln, Sr., Fred Gurney, Howard Bailey, Willlam Thorp, John Albright, James Bushfield and H. E. Goodrich on the charge of rlot, and Jobn Briedenbaugh, George Hutton, Tom McCoy, Fred Frerichs, Jeff Kirk, Doc Martin, Henry Martin, Sr., and Henry Mart'n, Jr., onthe charge of asssult with intent to kill. They were brought to Hartington on the evening train and glven a hearing before Judge Nissen. Those arrested for rlot were bound over till the 9¢h of July in bonds of $100 each; those arrested on the charge of assault with intent to kill wera bound over till the 9th of July in bonds af $260 each. 1t is to be remembered that our last grand jury found indlctments against saveral of these purties, and three indiet- ments sganst Bridenbaugh, and that Bridenbaugh is under an indictment in the United States court at Omaha. One evening in May this John Briden- baugh, followed by agang of toughs, made a bold and audacious attack on the postoflice bullding, when Mr. Pollock, accompanied by his wife and a gentleman friend who was vieiting them from the east, broke all the windows out of 1t and fired several shots, Their lawless act created the wildest excitement, and everybody expected hourly to hear of a cold-blooded and diabolical murder be- ing committed In their midst. A few days after the outbreak Bridenbaugh was arrested, brought to Omaha, indicted and put under $5,000 bonds for his appear- ance at the next term of the United States district court, Commenting on the outrage and Its effects in Cedar county, the Nonpareil further remarks: The Coleridge rlot business still drags along, and while we immagine sll were sorry that they were mixed up in It we opine that many will find that their troubles have but just begun. This thing of having riots in a country like this, where the people are supposed to be at leest half way clvilized, should not and will not be condoned by anyone having tho loast regard for our laws or the wel- fare of our country. As we have before published in these columns the whole trouble arises from the fact that a clique wanted one of its gang to have the postoftice and 1o splte of their sculduggery could not oust from the po- sition & man whom they hated simply because they could not run Lkim, ana who proposed to paddle his own canos to suit himself, regardless of the dicta- tlonof a worthless clique. We have held from the start that no matter If every staiement made by Mr. Pollock in bis communication to this paper were untrue, and that if all tho in- ternal falsehoods his enomies bave told about him were true, there was 10 occa- slon for the gathering of a mob and a riot. Mr. Pollock is responeible at law. Bridenbaugh clalms to be an attorney, and he, above all others, should not have been mixed up in an affalr of that kind. Hispropermodecf redrees was thronghthe courts—if the charges madb agalnst him by Mr. Pollcck were false; If they were true, he should have kept quiet. Bat no, mob law was resorted to, and as we have said before, there will be some mighty tall sweering before the matter is ended. ‘Woe believe there has been some already, and the tallest is yet to come. We are reliably Informed that Mr. Neligh, of the Western detective agency, will keep men engaged in working up evidence against the Colerldge rloters. The county at present is ‘‘lousy” with them and they propose pushing thinge, Mr, Nelighand Mr. Diogman, of tha force, have made our office seyeral pleasant visits In the past week. Both are gentlemen snd goodfellows and while we would like to see them often, we hope Cedar county will keep so stralght here- after that thelr services will not often be called for here. Several of the de- tectives will stay %in the county, and more will come dorlng the trial, Detective Neligh and four of hls men retorned home yesterday and he said to a reporter for Bee last night that nothing will be left undone to thoroughly right every particle of wrong that 'hu been committed at Coleridge, BEAT 10 0'CLOCK MONDAY.
