It ought to hire some good aignal service man to pick out fair days for the races. Bargalns in silk at Harkness Brothera’. The waterworks company will keep thelr office open at the noon hour and from 7 to 8 e’clock In the evening, to ac- commodate those who are engaged during the regular business hours of the day. Buy a good carpet sweeper at Hark- ness Brothers', A permlt to wed was yesterday granted to A, W. Mandermakers and Wilhemina K. Themer. The carpenter firm of Mandermakers & Van seem to be “joln- ers” also, as Van, theother partner, got a llcense the day before, White goods and summer dress goods at Harkness Brothers. The four-yesr-old boy, Bert Hunt, who fell down the cellar stalrway at his parents’ resldence, 722 Fourth street, a few days since, and 1eceived severe In- juries to his right slde, is slowly re- covering. John Frederick, who seems to fhave a very{ hard reputation asa *‘coon carver,” now lles in the clty jailon a charge of assanlting another colored man, named John Beecher, a razor being the offensive weapon, No blood was shed in the rampus. A qulet talk was yesterday had be. tween saveral gentlemen in the mayor's office, planning or trylng to plan with & Kunoxvllle, Maricn county, man abount getting a delegation to the convention in August next that was favorable to the mayor as democratic nominee for goy- ernor, The city marshal yesterday terved notices on all the railway companles that they must not run their engines faster than about eight miles an hour inside the clty Umits, and must not lec thelr cars stand on street crossings, 80 as to obstruct travel, and that any vlolation would be prosecated, by order of the city councll sitting as a board of heslth, Whenever there is a ecarcity of local news the evening papers always put in an account of MoClurg's cracker factory team ruoning away., One wounld suspect that It is an advertising dodge of MecOlurg's, if it were not for the fact Henry Wagner, that an injanction will be asked for against him, before Judge Loofbourow, in the district court next Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock. A lke notlce in another court was served on Wagner some time ago. This is tao first of the Councll Bluffs injunction cases brought In the distrlct court. One of tho race horses at the drlving park yesterday morning got away, and made & wild run out of the gates, and away to the tranafer and dashed into the bullding Itself, and was there ocaught, causing quite a flarry of excltement in and about the depot. There seems to be & manla among. the horses to enter bulldings. Only a night or two ago a colt managed {0 climb the stalrway to the second floor of Everett's block, and this other incldent followlng so qulckly glves color to the belief that it is an epldemle. Everybody is going to Old John Rob- inton's great show, which is to be here next Saturday, This show does not make as big a spread on paper as some others, but puts the extra money into the show {tself, so that the people get more satlafaction. Robinson takes great pride in keeping all of his advertised promises, and the praiss which the show is winning everywhere this season s proof that this season {t {s a better show than ever, which is saying enough to cause every man, woman and child to be anxious to take It in. % Dr. Oapell, who has lately located here, and establlished an office in the opera ‘house block, has concluded that this good field for the startlng of a popular medical journal, and has completed a rangements for publishing such a one, to be known as the Council Bluffs Medlcal Journal, the first number of which will appear in about ten days. 1t is his pur- poss to glve the people the benefit of the latest facts in the sclence of medicine, the peculfarities of different diseases and how to treat them. Care is to be taken to use plaln language, eimplifying and explain- ing profeesional modes of expression so that the journal may be of practical use in the household.j The Wabash railway is arranging for change of time-table, to go into effect next Sunday, by which the leaving time will be an hour and a half later, thus commodating the public much better than now. There will also be a change by which the tralns will leave the trans- fer, and then stop at the local depot, in- stead of the reverse way now followed. The establishment of a local depot meets along felt want, surely, for the incon- venience of golng clear out into the country, at the transfer, to get a traln has been a serlous Inconvenlence, and has glven other roads, having local de- pots, a great advantage. Not only will the public appreciate the convenience of | g g, the local depot, which can easily bs reached by atreet cars, and which is within easy walking distance of a great portion of the clty, but the road will find that their business will be increased by thus accommodating this clty. A BLUE OUTLOOK. Rain, as Usual, Spoils the Races at the Driving Park, The raln yesterday made a sad inter- raption in the races, and the programme, as announced for yesterday, goes over until to-day, so that, should the weather | g prove favorable, there will be all that can be attended to. The raln is a great disaster to the success of the meeting, which otherwise promised to be so great. ‘With one of the finest fields of horses eyer gathered at any meeting In this part of the country, with the best track in the west, there seemed nothing to be desired but good weather, but that was essentlal. Since the opening meet- ing of the drlving park associatlon there has not been a single meeting which h: not been interfered with, and practically olled by bad weather. At each recurr- ing meeting the plucky mansgers and directora have gone down into their own pockets, and labored with some of the more enterprising cltizens, to get the means of hanging out heavy purses again, and meeting the large expenses, hoping that the results would commensurate somewhat with the exertions. put forth, but each time, justas thelr hopesjeeemed about to be reallzed, the rains set In and all proved in vain, By this long con- tinued werles of misfortunes, a heavy financial burden bas had to be borne by o few men, and it 1s not to be wondered at If now, when another attempt has been made, only to bo agaln thwarted, that these plucky and enterprising men should feel llke weakening a little, or letting some one elsa put the shoulder under the burden, One prominent man was heard to make! the prediction yesterday that this would be the last meeting to be held on the track here, his resson for ssying so being that the few who had been bearing the burden had naturslly become weary and dlscouraged. Added to their other dlscouragements is the fact that little support is to be had from the oltizens here, there always belng more atrons from abroad than from the city tself. 1f there is any benefit to be de- rived from the reputation gained by the track here, and the drawiog of many rangers hre to attend the meetlngs it 1s surely shared by many who will not do a thing to keep the association alive. FLAG STATIONS. e — Several Oases of Small-Fox Reported in the Outlying Towns. Several towns in Iowa are belng troubled some by small-pox. Seven cases of the dlsease are reported as having been at Shenandoah, two of which have proved fatal, and two others as very likely to prove so, one of the persons now lying dlngnrunully ill belng the former edltor of the Republi Dr, Hager, of 8t. Jo, says that the disease has been of the most that they are so persistent in declaring that they have had no runawaye, and they don't want avy such notices, The prohibltlonlsts have served a notice on Ed Sherlock, the pertner of waliguant type, but that no farther danger {s feared, 8s the quarantioe pro- vislons are so complete as to prevent further spread of the dlsease. There are £wo cases reported at Farragut, one case #t Essex, and three cases at Strathan, THE DAILY BEE COUNCIL BLUFFS “THURSDA Y, MAY 28, 1885, A FRISKY FREAK. An Omaha Man Jumps From @ Third Story Window of the 0g- den Honse, — He Gets Off With a Broken Leg. At a late hour Tuesday night an Omaha man giving his name as Michael Shay, reglstered at the Ogden and was glven a room on the third floor. Between 1 and 2 o’clock in the morning, an occn- pant of a room on the second floor, with a window faclng out upon the roof of the one story brlek bullding adjoining the hotel, and occupled as Metealf’s saloon, heard anofse as of a man falling onto the roof, &nd then terrible groans, He summoned the night clerk, and the dit- covery was made that Shay had fallen or jumped from the window of his room onto the roof, and was lylng there in an unconscious condition, Dr, Lacy was cslled, and an examination showed that Shay’s leg had been broken In the fall, the fracture belng be- low the knee. It was a long time before the injured man could be brought into any condition to answer questlons Intel- ligently, and even then he could give no explanation as to how he got ont of the window. In taking the jump, or the tumble, he carrled some of the bed cloth- ing with him, and the charltable explan tlon was that he had pell of slee) walking, while others assert that he was 80 under the influence of drink that he did not know or care what he was dolng, but in a crazy fit jumped to get out of the way of some fancled enemy, It was range that he was not more serlously Injured, and he may well congratulate himself on getting off with a broken leg. Word was yesterday sent to Officer Donahue, of the Omaha police force, who is_related to the injured man, and steps will be taken to have him removed to his home. ——— Substantlal abstracts of titles and rea estate loans, J.
