THE DAILY BEE- " NYONG THE COWBOYS. The Life and Characteristics of This Class Indigenons to the (reat West. The Most Marvelouns Horsemen in the World— Foats ‘With the Lariat, Ete, arvelous Fort Keogh (Mont.) Correspondence Cleve 1and Leader. The cattle industry of the northwest has developed & new race of ocreatures that are called by some cowboys, by others cow-punchers, These Individuals, indigenous to the country, are totally different from thelr brethren a few miles further south, for there Is as much differ- ence between the cowboys of Montana and the cowboys of Texas as there Is be- tween our New KEngland Yankees and our New Orleans Crecles. In short there has grown u of the cattle industry another set beings that are very much herders of a few years ago. 80 back, cow herders on the plalns were regarded as the very worst class of men In our country: a class who were always ready to make a gun fight, had marked to each one’s credit the “‘killing of hi man,” and who Invariably died with hls boots on. In the vernacular of the fron- tler, he was a b-a-d man altogether, and a cutter and shooter from away back, They looked upon a tenderfoot with be- ooming scorn, bore the appearance of continually thirating for gore, and had no hopes of heaven or fear of heil, The typical cowboy of by-gone shonld wear a large white wsom- brers, bound with a flashy gold oord and tassel, high top boots, leather pants, fringed buckskin shirt, no vest, and a palr of Mexlean spurs as big as saucers, He chould also bs armed to the teeth, be well mounted on a fiery buckiog broncho, have a long slnewy lariat tralling behind his steed, Inilan fashlon, and habituslly be half full of his favorite beverage, Now as a matter of fact THE REAL COWBOY OF THE NORTHWEST, I8 & very different person from what he s pupposed to be. Many of them are collego graduates who etood highwith the faculty of eastern universities, and not a few aro ablo to solve a mathematleal problem or parso a Latin sentence with as much ease as thoy can throw a steer or punch a brand. I have cbserved In Miles City, one of the headquarters of cattlemen in the northweat, all clestes cf individuals, from the boardloss youth to the gray haired man, dressed In the style of and engaged In the occupatlon of cowboys. Many undertake the businees f:r want of something to do lu tho way of earning a living, but the majorlly accept their lives from cholce. A better 1ace of fel- lows than the true, genuine cowboy of the northwest does mot exist on the North American continent. The average wages for a cowboy 1s not very good—840 pr month and findiogs —but the lite is exclting, and the free, open exerciss assures excellont health and perfect digestion, which is better than all the wages they could get. I:e ®ompanied a round-up party last fall that coured the ranges north of Miles City, and on that trip learned many new points regarding their lifa, habits, and manner of living, heretofore unknown to me, I found they endured hardships that would have cost many men their lives, and therefore became, by contlnual exposure, perfect types of phyeical manhood. They are unquestlonable the finest horzemen in the world, and are con- stantly practicleg with rifles or revolvers In their endeavera to become dead shots, and they generally succeed. Living in the saddle, they worshlp thelr horses, and are perfeotly happy when on the backs of their anlmals flying over the plaing. Daring the herding sozson, sixty or seventy miles ls an ordinary day’s ride. They are brave, will share their 1ast ratlon with a s'ranger, nsver lie nor cheat, and hate a horse thief like they do the devilhimself. Itis a mistake to im- aglne that cowboys are a dangerous set. Any one is as safe with them as w.th auy peoplo in the world, unloes he ttesls a horte or s hunting for a fight. In thelr eyer, death Is wild punishment for a horse stealer. Indeed, it is the highest erlmo known to the unwritten law of ranching. Nearly every horso thief strung up last season in Montana, (and there were fifty-nine casuultles of that sort from April to October) was eent to his Iast journey by cowboys, The nu- merous vigilance committees were com posed almost exclueively of cattlo herders who weged a never-ending war of exter- mination against horse-thleving rascals, until all the bands were either broken up or drivon out of the territory. Their life, hablts, education, and neceisities breed this iveling In them, and they delight in appearing roogher than they actually are, To a tenderfoot (all cast- ern men or new srrivals are called tender- feet) they love to tell blood curdling stories aud impress him with the dangers of the frontier. But no man need quar- rel with them unlees he seeks it, and then he wiil ind the cowboy is always preparéd to shoot qulcker than chain lightning, They also have a slang pe- culiar to the range, and it is astonishing how quickly esetern bred and educated people will drop Into using it. HERDS they are watching, and very trequently become owners of ranches. It Is the am- owners themselves, large scale as possible other cowboys to watch thelr cattle, Unless you want to any kindpess he has dons or for a share of his rude meat, They pride themselves | else he might bave baen thrown instead on their ho-Yinliw. and are exceedingly | of the bull, to which he was much in- touchy on all mat'ers relatiog toft. As the steer passed through he jumped clear over a table, around which were four cattlemen engaged In playing a friendly game of draw poker, Whon the men saw the pony following the steer they dodged under the table which made the animal’s passage ensy in leaplng over the table. Kortunately the doors were wide enough in both rear and feont and the ceiling high enough to make a good place of entrance and exlt for the fright- ened steer, who did his part of the clrcus to perfection, THE LARIATS, AND HOW THEY ARE HAN- DLED, I notlced a variety of lariats with this round-up party, nearly ull of which were made of the very best quality of hemp, twisted so extremely tight that It was|For Gentlemen's wear, In the world, for the money- \ 4 almost impoessible to untwist the strande, Others were made of sinew corde, and were bralded very neatly, the ends, or laszoing parte, being greased so as to slip ensily, Thelr lasscos were about sixty sixty-five fect long, one-third of which forms the noose, and, when swing— ing it, it s grasped a littls above the loop, 80 &8 to prevent the same from slipplng until launched throvgh the atr, The Jasso is swung over the head and left shoulder, and back over the right shoulder, a peculiar turn of the wrlst as it begins to return keeping the loop wide open, When flying through the ale the nooso takes a slishitly oval form, but re- mains open, and settles quietly around the object aimed at McGaigan exhib- fted to me the modus operandi of handling the rope, and some of his feats performed in my prerencs were not only exocuted with moryelous precieion, but were also beautiful to look at. This model cowboy Is certainly an expert In his professien, perhaps the best rider and lagsoist in the whole northwest. What Slosson is to billlards McGaigan 1s to his profeesion. Oane afterncon while loafing around the camp fire on the Mus:leshell, McGalgan and 1 got talking about the skill he had acqulred in throwing cattle, and I had little difficulty in persuading bim to let me into the secrets of his won- derful dexterlty, and actually showing me some of the finer points of the busi- ness. Mountlng our bronchos, we rode off through the sege brush and out onto the open prairle w here numberlees cattle were peacefully munching the luxuriant buffalo grass, My friend had his best larlat fastened to the pommel of the sad- dle, and first showed me many fancy shots, throwing the laeso from or to any polnt over ei'her shounlder, bebind or in front. He caught a tremendous bull by the horns who looked up in surprise, and started off llke a steam engine, but the pony bestrode by the cowboy planted his forofeet in the ground and checked Mr, Ball in his mad career before the latter got woll started. The enraged steer went round and round inaclrcle at a 2:40 galt, the pony acting as a perfect pivot and tarnivg slowly around with him, but it was no use; the bull was prisoner and would have remained so had not McGalgan tsken pity on him and paesed the wonderful ring down the line, npon which the rope leaped from around tha horns and tcll to the grcund, McGalgan remarked that it was no credit 5 catch a bull by the horns for he cannot bo thrown by them, ane is simply hold as a prisoner, but the SKILL IN THROWING A LASSO is to pitch the nooee just in front of an animal when he is golng at fall gallop, g0 that the mext step he treads into it.
