MONDAY, MAY il. 1885. HANGING ON HOPE. More Favorable Indicators Yes'erday for Recovery. The Unfortunate Viotim of Midnight Maraunders, Still Lives But Has Not Gained Oonsclonsness, The physicians who are attending John E. Welgman reported last evening that they conaldered his conditfon much im- proved to what it was Satorday, and think that If he pulls through to-day and to-morrow he will recover. Dr. Tilden mald to a reporter for the Bee that when he visited the patlent yesterdsy morning he could see that Mr. Weigman knew and recognized him, but was not able to speak, John E, Weigman is the man ‘who was waylald Fridey night at his own door step by a brace of black hearted vil- lans, and It is generaily supposed that they intended to murder him. There is no other partloularly reasonable theory, because he is not a man whom any ona ‘would be likely to hit over the head for the purpose of commliting robbery. It has been learned since the affalr ocourred that he was atruck witha brick bat, and In the examination of his injuries Sat- urday it was aleo dlscovered that the blow given him was of sufficlent force to crush a hole into his skull so that the brain oozed out. The ductors performed a surglcal operation Saturdsy evening and took five pleces of bone from the wound. One of these pleces rested inst the brain and while that was there the victim suffered Intense agonies of paln and had several very severe convul- sions. Soon as the bone was romoved he brightened up and grew better. Qaite a large sectlon of the tkull wis found to be fractured and required ralsing up. The patient rested easy moat of yes. terdey, and for the first time since being hurt took a little nourlshment, in the shape of mllk, yesterday morning. His friends, who are numbered by the socore in Omaha, eatnestly hope and pray for his final and safe recovery. If they could get hold of the scoundrels who commitied this inhuman outrage, it is hard to prediot what the consequences would be. Hundreds of inquirles were made yes- torday of the suffering man's condition, and many called at his residence on Cuming sireet to see him, Saturday the employes in the railroad shops where Mr, Welgman worked, after learning of his misfortune, were very much cat up and in the afternoon held an indignation meeting. At that meet- ing they passed, by unanimous vote, the following. Resolved, That the employes of the Unlon Pacific shops now assembled pledge ouraelves to pay the sum of five hundred dollars as a reward to aby parties who will arrest the person or parsons that as- savlted J. E. Wiegman on the night of the 8th inst, and that the ocitizens are re- quested to offer a similar amount. Jonn J, Curris, Secretary. ‘Whether Mayor Boyd will co-operate with these men and offer a reward for the bloody handed outlaws, remalns to be seen, There seems to be a general impresaion that he aught to do so. This wretched act of villainy should inclte Marshal Cumings, to increased ex- ertions, towards ridding Omaha of such characters, It is well known, that Canada Bill, one of the most notorlous deamons unhung, with his following of three card monte sharks, thugs, cat throats and thieves have been lounging n and about this ofty for some time past, their prinoipal loafing places belng three saloons; one on Harney street, one on Douglas and one on Twelfth street. It 1s tlme now that their stay here be made #0 unpleasant that they will have to hunt some other climate. The shop men, owing to his former affillations with them demand that Marshal Cummings leave no stone nnturned in his efforts to run down and bring to justice the wanton brutes who so maliciously, murderously, and cowardly way-laid John E, Welgman. A ROASTED TRAMP, He Made His Bed on the Top of a Brick Kiln, and It Burned, For a short time yesterday morning, Lievy & Son’s brick kiln was transformed into a cremation mill and almcst reduced to ashes the winter-beaten form of an old bum tramp. Several days, recently, a ragged, whitkey-soaked outcaet, calling himself Daniel Leary, had been hanging around the brick yard and at night was wont to sleep near the furnace. One week ago, however, Uaniel got work on the grade and faitbfully shoveled dirt until Saturday evening, He drew the ‘wages due him up to that {ime, purchased anarticle or two of clothing, and to cheer up his spirits threw in several slugs of the “tgood old stufi” and was feeling qulte lordly. But about 11 o'clock Baturday night he went to his accustomed roost at the brick kiln. The weather was 0 chilly that Danlel concluded he would make his bed on top of the oven, which he did by placing two boards down and then stretching out on them. As the liquor in Danlel commenced to die he slept soundly, and the watchman, P, E. Micheal, who went to work at midnight, bullt up a rouslng big fire, He had no knowledge of the sleeping guest. 2 o'clock flames began to lesp from the top of the furnace, and Micha:l was paralyzed for a moment. He thought the whole kiln had split open. Then he saw the man, who was still asleep, snd tried to waken him, but had great diffi oulty doing it, By this time the tramp's olothing were on fire, and before any- thing could be done wera burned nearly off of him, However, he was saved with- out belng very badly blistered, and yes- torday left the country, A Pigeon's Good Luck, A Kansas Olty commerclal tourist fell a victim In this oty Saturday night to the wiles of & female bunko jolnt and only retrieved his loss through sheer good luck. It seems that he met a party of men in a saloon at the corner of Har- ney and Eleventh, and after a few rounds at the bar yielded to the rollcitatlons of one of hls new acquaintances to call on some nice and exclusive ‘‘ladies.” The drommer was taken to & house on Howard strest near Thirteentb, and in the course of a convivial hour w. neatly deprived of his pocketbook. He shortly discovered the theft and, fearlng next for his life, madea hasty excuse to leave, At the corner of Farnam strect he met Officer Henchey and related the clrcumstance. The policeman accompa- uled the man to the house of the klepto- manisc falries sud, upon threat of pul-|f ing the place, forced them to acknowl- edge their guflt and return the purse. Crimes of this character are of nightly occurrence but the geme is so quietly worked and the guilt so difficult to es- tablish that the unwary, once a victim, has little redress. e —— A Small Fire, Fire broke ont about 10 o'clock last night In the second story of Reddick’s block, on Fitteenth street near Farnam, in P. A, Gavins book store, on the socond floor, When first discovered the flames were Ing from a pile of bibles undernesth the counter. The depart- ment was oalled out, but with buckets and quick work, several parties who had roached the wsoene, extinguished the blszs before the department got ready to throw water. The damage will not ex- ceed 850, PERNSONAL. —_— John Beatty, of Ogden, Utah, is at the Millard, A. J. Baum and W, B, Yale, New York, are at the Millard, 8. E, Tyson, of Grand Island, Neb, — —The toughs and fast young men who im- prove the night with revelry and dark deeds have recently taken a fancy to unloading_fire- arms on the streets. Not a night passes but that the decent wayfarer and weary police are startled by frequent pistol shots, The report of arevolverin the quiet streets at night sounds like the disoharge of abattery of ten pounders aud must awaken the sleeping res- idents in all the mneighborhood, The final lodgment of the bulletsis alsoa matter of some solicitude as 1t might occur that, pierc- ing a window, they thould strike a peacoful cltizen in his bed. At any rate, such dem- onstrations are violent disturbances of the peace and should ba rigorously punished, —Alex. Baseman, a negro, was slugged in the alley between Farnam and Douglas near Tenth street, about nine o'clock Saturday night, The thugs felled him with a blow in the back of the head, and rifled his pockets as be lay insensible, He was shortly afterward discovered and removed to his home. The report gained currency duriog the evening that the man was shot, but such, from the evidence of his wounds, which are mere bruises and contusions, is not the case, —The mayor and county commissioners finally reached an amicable conclusion Satur- day evening ahout rooms in the court house for city officers, The northwest corner base, ment square is to be given up for the city clerk and auditor, and just as soon as the apartments can be put in shape, which will require only a few days, moving will com- mence, ~—John Logan, one of Omaha’s bess known and highly esteemed oitizens, has been layiog at St. Joseph's hospital lor tee past six days, ® very sick man. But his friends will be gratified to learn that heis much improved now will soon be one among them again, —Officer Crawford took in & citizen of Eleventh street yesterday, who under the in- fuence of too much red eye, was pouncing upou and tryiog to fight with every person he met, He will get his reward from Justice Steinberg this morning. e ‘Will Oontest Weaver's Election, CHI0AGO, I, May 10.—A Springfield tel- egram says that Leeper, the defeated dem- ocratic caudidate for representative in the thirty-fourth legislative district, has changed his mind and will contest the election of Weaver, The Weather. ‘WasniNoToN, May 10,—The upper Mies- issippl: warmer, fair weather, winds, becoming variable, The Missouri valley: fair followed by partly eloudy weather, local rains, slightly warmer, GATHERING THEM IN: The Gonld Syndioate Makes Another Grab and Gobbles More Raillroad, It was learned at headquarters, by reporter for the Ber, Saturday, that the Union Paclfic company Is negotiating for a lease of the Oregon Rallway & Naviga- tlon company's line, which is an exten- slon of the Oregon Short Line (already owned by the U. P.) from Hamlilton to Portland, The Northern Paclfic in mak- ing the loase and the offer they make for the property, Is maid tobe 5 per cent. on the dividends for three years and after that time 6 per cent, But the offer has not yet been accepted, though the differences to overcome are so small that the lease is regarded aocom- plished except as to the mere details, A dispatch from New York to the St. Louls Globe-Democrat dated May Gih, saya: It is generally understood here that the Unlon Pacific Is anxious to complete the leass, which will give it an independ- ent line to the Paclfic coast, and that whilo some of the Northern Pacific di- rectors prefer an exclusive lease others wish to build the Cascade branch; and, moreover, the Oregon Railway and Navi- gation company bas refused to lease the property to either company separately. The method in which the lease may be made and the guarantees by the two com- panies rendered effective has not been agreed on. There has been conslderable discussion among the friends of the Oregon and Northera Paclfic companles as to whether or not the Unlon Pacific can give a valua- ble guarantee without the consent of con- gress. Shortly after the Wilson report op the credit mobilier scandal, congre on March 8, 1873, passed an act restrlot- ing the powers of the Union Pacific com~ pany. The following s an extract from the act: *No dividend shall hereafter be made by sald company but from the actaal net earnings thereof, and no new stock shall b issued or mortgage pledges made on the property or future earnings of the company without the leave of con- grees. No director or officer of sa'd road shall hereafter be interested, directly or indlrectly, In any contract therewlth, ex- cept for bis lawful compensation as such officer. Any director or officer who shall pay or declare, ald In paying or declar- ng, any dividend or creating any mort- gsge or pledge prohibited by this act, shall be punished by imprisonment not exceeding two years and by a fine not exceeding $5,000.” However the company clalms that under a section added subsequently to the original charter, they have a right to enter upon any kind of an arrangement with a connecting road. Talking with a U. P. officlal when this matter was brought up he spoke enthu- slactically and In very glowing terms of the great benefits Omaha will derive when this scene is completod and the U. P. road runs its own trains Into Portland. ——— Don't fail to read Motter's price list of groceries on 5th page of this lssue, ———— A Serious Accident. Geo. Kauffman, a barber at the Goos hotel, met with an accident yesterday afterncon that msy cost him his life. ‘While driving along St. Mary's avenue his horse became frightened and started to ron, At Zimmerman's saloon the animal struck a shed post, turned the vehicle up on one side, and threw Kauf- mann wiolently on the hard pavement. He was carrled to his home on Twenty- seoond street, suffering yery much and bleeding freely at the mounth, Uptoa late hour last night this bleeding had not stopped and the man wss in great sgony, showing that his injuries, which are Internal, must be very dangerous.
