THE DAILY BEE -SATURDAY, APRIL 18. 1885. 5 — — THE DARK 1DOI. Opiam aed Its Victims in Omata, —_— pends, Each one of the pllla of “hop” or opiam oosts, at retall, twenty five conts, A confirmed oplum smoker oan smoke sometimes as many as twenty-five, fifty or even one hundred of these pills In one night. Of course others do not use as much. *‘The value of a pipe Increases with its use. A plpe that had been used for two or three yesars is worth much more than one which 1a new, while a pipe which has been smoked ten or fifteen years 18 worth 840 or $50. The reason of this fs that the continued smoking throvgh one stem imparts a mellow and highly aromatic flavor to that stem. ‘‘There soems to bs some slgn among the ‘hop smok one smoker can readlly distinguish an- other, and without asking him directly, can tell that he is an oplum-smoker. This sign, whatever it may be, will galn ments this Year. Paving and Grading to be Done— Polloy ef the New Council. Something About the “Hop-Joints™ h and the Habit, Thore was arumor last night that Marshal Cammings intended to close up the opium joints on his own responsibil- ity, and without watting for the action of the city council. But the report proved to be unfounded. Itis belleved that the outcome of the present sgitation agalnst these places will be thelr total suppression. Certalnly year. The clty of Omshs, In keeping with her spirit of push and enterprise, at which she now stands. the journals of this olty cannot wago too [ B sdmisslon Into a%l the SPReJRAL | A reporter for the Brr olled bitter a warfare sgainst them, and it Is to against all cutslders. J Tharrday upon City Engineer Rosewater relatlve to the prospects for public im- provements this year. Mr. Rosewater said that there would not be nearly so much work done in the way of publlc improvement thi be hoped that as In St. Louis, Ohicago and Oincionali, the dlsclosures In the newspapers will be fatal to the existence of theso dens. * Of all the mysterlous and terrible fea. tares of criminal life in Omaha, there s, perhaps, nothing more fraught with my: tery than the opium “‘joints” of the city; myaterious, by reason of the dark veil of almost Impenetrable secresy wnich cloaks the resorts and the actiona of the con- firmed opiam-eaters of the town; terri- ble, because of the throttling of all moral character and physleal force, which Is an evitable result of the awfal habit. The bondage of the poor opium wratch to his dark idol is, once entered upon, never to bo cast off. The victim of the liquor habit may, by efforts more or less atren- uous, throw off the shackles which threaten him; the oplum-eater rarely er never. Once let the habit be firmly es. tabllshed; once let Its envenomed fangs sink into the flesh of its victlm and the aubtle polson course through his vens, and hels forever doomed. He cannot shake off the coils; they close upon him, crushing out cf him all life; he sinks first into spiritless spathy; then blank deapalr, and finslly when the vital ener- gy fails to reepond sufficlentiy to the stimulus of the drug, death must ensue; anlese, perchance, the victim first turn suictde, The oplum jolats are, so far as knowa, four in number. Oue of them s situa- ted on Twelfth strest between Douglas and Dodge, nex% to the Buckingham theatre; another is on Tenth street, on the west side of the street, between Douglas and Dodge; the third is on Har- ney street, on_the north side between Eleventh and Twelfth; while the largest establishment Is on the northeast corner of Thirteenth and Dodge streets, In every case thess places are run in connec- tion with Chinese laundries. and in every {nstance the proprietor or overeeer of the jolnt Is one of the Chinese laundrymen. it might be well to state in this connec- tlon that the talk which s sometimes In- dulged In by the individual of resplendent fancy about the gorgeous fitting-up of the places, 1s all bosn. The apartments are all of the plainest character poesible, and there is not the slightest attempt at any - thing sumptuous. And this is true, in all probability, of every opium joint from New York to San Franclaco, excepting, of course, the private ‘'lay-out” of the wealthy opium-cater. Itis an extremely hard matter for an outsider not addicted to the habit to get into one of these places; it s impoesible for him to obtain entranca at all unlees *‘steered” in by a habltue of the establistment. Were any curlosity- seeker to endeavor to seek ad- mittance to an opium joint, even ostensl- bly for the purposs of indulging in o smoke, he would find the doors literally and figuratively closed agalnst him; and the sallow-hued celestial to whom he wight prefer his request would mavifest a paioful ignorance of any such thing as oplum-smoking and in all probatility ask him, In pigeon-English, to walk ou:. Thr. ugha friend, however, who has been inttlated into the mysteries of the ‘‘di- vine" drug, admlssion may be gained. And it was by this latter methud that the reporter was enabled to gain an in- sight into the workings and appearsncs of the oplum lay-out or joint. It will be interesting to observe for the mo- ment its interior appolntments and its habitues, Passing through the laundry which occupies the front part of the building, where the almond.oyed sons of the Flowery kingdom are bending over their work, the observer pasees through a back entrance and up a rickety flight of stairs Into a back room where the oplum smoking s conducted. Pausing for a moment, one notices that the walls are covered with small bunks or bede, one above another, where the opiom vietim lios atretched out, enjoying the pleasurss of the temporary rhapsody induced by the drog. Examine the outfit which the smoker uses, Firat, there is the plpe or bowl, very much simllar to an ordiuary tobacco plpe. This pipe hasa atem which varies in lepgth from eigh- teen inches to two or three feet, Then there it mall lamp or burner used to heat the opium or **hop” as the China- men call it, and a loog “pin,” by means of means of which the smoker plcks up the opium. The oplum most commonly used comes in the form of a black, mo- lassea like mixture. This Is taken up on the polnt of the pinand by a process somewhat difficult to describe, twirled around in the bowl of the pipe which is held near the flame of the Jamp. This e kept up until the mass of the opiam has assumed the shspe of a small pill. This pill s then placed in the bowl of the plpe, over the flame of the lamp, and leaning back, stretched at fall length on the bunk, the smoker inhales, in long aud easy breaths, the Influence of the beatific drug, e ——— Pure, pleasant, sure—Red Star Cough Cure, 'rompt, permanent cure. In organ playing the per- formances of Mr. Eddy are worthy to be deeignated as eminent, aud he is un doubtedly the peer of the greatest llving organlsts, Mr, Eddy will be asslsted in the con- certs by twenty-five of the best slogers of Omahn, They will glve several grand choruses, among which are Triumphal March (*“*with sheathed sword”) from “‘Naaman,” by Costa; *‘Stars in Heaven” by Rheinberger; ‘‘March Romaine,” by Gouncd and a “Spring Song,” by Pln- suti, The soloitts are Mrs. C. E. Squlres, Mras, J. S. White, Miss Lillie Chamber- lain, Mr. W. B. Wilkins and Mr. Jay Northrup. A very pleasing and import- ant feature will be the work of Mr. W. Tabor as accompauist. This gentleman 1s, without doubt, one of the most accomplished organlsts and mausicians in the west. He has but re- cently located In Omaha and accepted tho important position ef organist and choir director in the First Congregatlonal church, Those who have heard him in this city are dellghtsd with his exqulsite taste, smasterly technique and artistic con- ception of the compoeer’s deslgn. That these concerts will be the crown- ing musical feature of the season in Omaha, and the houze will be crowded with our best society people, is a fore- gone conclusion. e ——— Hosford's Acid Phosphate, HUNDREDS OF BOTTLES PRESCRIBED. The vocal selections now under rehearsal are the “Bridal Chorus” from ‘Lohengrin,” the “Fishermen’s Choras” from *‘Mass- nlello,” the “Damascus Triumphal March” from the oraterlo of ‘‘Naaman,” and two choruses from Hayden's *‘Sea- son’s.” Beslde these the Muslcal Union orchestra Is preparing to present a num ber of pleces of a high order, Out of the Invitations sent to vocalists of known excellence, there have been already upwards of 100 responses, and it is proposed to ralse the choras to 125, The singers enter on thelr work with en- thusiasm and spirlt and the choruses and orchestral performances with the ald of the four vocal sololsts, who are to be brought from the east, warrant the pre- diction that the festival will be a great and sstisfactory event for the city and state. statute provisions, In the case of most of these streets, the time for protest has explred, and apon the clty council the right to declde upon the materlal to be used devolves.
