BRrsNaN, Saturday eveniog Justios Stenborg mar- * ried James Kogelthaler to Mary Verbs, and Nols Hammer to Hannah Jensen. One hundred and thirty-one liquor deal- ors havo filed application In the city clerk's office for licenees, inclading saloon, brewery and wholesale men. —Betore Justics Gnstave Anderson yester dny, judgment for 885 and costs was rendered in favor of Morse & Brunner, real estate dealers, In o suit against C, W, Cain. The claim was for commissions. The officers and ladies at Fort Omaha gave an admitable dramatic performance Sat- urday ovening at the post theatre, the play being that of “Uaste.” A number of gentle men and ladies from the city were among the iel\thd auditors. * 7 A telegram Saturday night from Wake- . field informed the police of o forgery of £30 by one Frank Rogers who claimed to be an employo of J. 8, Caulfield, Tho forgery was on the Security bank, Uaulfield had heard of knew no such man as Rogers, who, Canl- Little Bortio McCune, & son of William MecCune, was playing with a blank cartridge Saturday morning, He supposed that it was harmloss, He was mistaken. It was halt full of powder and when he set & match to it, the wicked thing exploded, His hand was saverely maimed. ~Mr. A. MclInuis, of the firm of McInnis and Bussey, arrived home last Saturday ‘morning from the east, where ho had beon on a business and plesuro trip, He visited his old homo in Canada, returning by the way of New Yorkand Boston, where he selected a vory handsomo line of spring and summer goods. —The Douglas County Agricultural socie- “ty's officors met Saturday to hear reports as to the district fair. It was learned from members who had been looking into the mat- ter that seven countios were ready to join in CITY AND COUNTY. _{An Amicable Settiement Between the Two. of tee Dispssition of the 0ld Conrt Honse Proparty. The Deal Consummated Yesterday Morning and the Deeds Tra ferred—Dotails of the Transaction. The county ocommissioners held a special sesslon yesterdsy morning to take the final ateps toward the transfer of the old court houso property. Gen.| Cowin, county attorney, being absent, a written opinion from George W. Doane was pro- duced, announcing the legallty of the mossare propossd. Tho sale of the property was completed. Tho county transferred to Mr. Paxton the old court house propetty, in return for ten thous- and dollars in cath, and two lots on Elghteenth and Farnam, which were turned over to the city. . Mr. L. W, Hill of Boggs & Hill, acted ns agont for Mr. Paxton and delivered to the county treasurer, the deeds to the property, made out by that gentleman in San Fran- olaco. A qait claim deed signed by Act- ing Mayor Marphy,i n behalf of the clty, was turned over to the Paxton estate. The $10,000 in cash was pald into the treasury where It now stands to the county’s oredit. A contract was made out by the commlssioners, In behalf of the county whereby the city is to ccoupy four large roomsand two vaults in the basement of the new ocourt house, for three years from and after May Lat,or untll tiu new City hall is com- pleted, if it ehould be completed before the atipulated time. <Under the contract the city will - got free wmse of the heat and light in in the building. The county ia to receive $5,000 from the clcy on or before the ficat day of August of this year. This is a most Important and beneficial move for the city. Tho clty zecords which have been acattered heretofore through threo diffcrent bulidings, the old tho project, and the time for it most favored was tho month of Soptember. It was deter- mined at an early day to meet with the Board of Trade and exchatge ideas upon the subject. —The @ouncil Bluffs postmaster and chiof of police were in Omaha Siturday in search of Mionie Woodard, late beer-slinger of the Buckingham. It appears that Wade Hamp- ton (» ifferent bread from the U, S. senator from South Carolina) had spont $65 of the $300 ho stole from the U, S, mail while postal city hall, the city treasurer's office In the Redick ballding, and the clty offices in the Crelghton bullding, and have been exposed to the great ritks of fire, will now be under one roof, and 1ip the fire- proof vaults. The county commissloners are now awaltlog the recolpt from Architect Meyers of the . specifications or the rotalning wall whicn is to be built for the Farnam bavk of the new court house slte. soon as theeo specifications are recelved, the work of clerk, and invested it in & watch and chain for tho oyprian, She promptly gave the jew- olry tothe Towa postmaster. Hampton was “:gone on” watches; ho had already given {up 2 $35 one to the postmaster which had been bought with part of the stolen $300. —Tt now looks as though that delightful re sort, the Buckingham theatre, would not suc ceed in obtalning a license, Soveral weeks ago the proprietor made an applicstin for o licensoand . deposited $100 with City Treasurer Buck. They foiled, bowever, to take the completing steps, nud although they last day for the is- building the wall will be at once com- menced. While he was gone to mail hls letters the house was unlocked and none of the inmates were at home. All the characters were taken by boys, and great credit ls due those who assumed the ladies’ parts, as queen, princess, lady-in-walting, snd more particulatly the fairy. * It was amusing to see the ““ladies” man- age thelr elegant tralns, and the court manners of all were the perfection of punctilious politeness. The cat made quite a hit, the young msn did remarka- bly well, and the page and the herald were much admired. The king acted his part with dignity, and the ogre. with a figroenoss well calcalated to Inspire ter- ror; the lion, tuto which he s supposed to transform himself, was a decided suc- oese, Soveral little poople sang and recited botween boenes, but owing to several dtsappointments the programme was not as foll as bad been intended. Certainly the boys deserve the highest pralee for the success of their effort, and ments were sworn out aund placed in the hands of Consfable Snowden, who speed- ly hied bimseli to the hash hole and closed it up, anoonncing that he was head blscuit-toseer for the time be- ing. He is still in possession and will so romain until the affalrs are eatiefac‘orlly adjusted. The following -are the claims roprecented by tho attachments which were aworn out in the Anderacn tribunal: F. P. Fosdyke, commlesion man, $190; John A, Freyhan, cigar dealer, $57; Allen Brothers, commieston merchants, $130; Basgorsheck, the tailor, $40; H. C. Temple, grocer, $13,880; Mrs, Gath— rle, $16; Joseph Bath, but:her, $215. In addition, Allen Brothers, who have virtually the first assertea clalm, hold a $500 mortzage on the es- tablishment. Nearly all tho salablo property of the place is mortgaged, in fact, and there is not eatfsfaction for half the claims which have been prosented. | P It is thought the total amount of indebt- ednets will exceed $1,500 to say nothing of the pay of the watter girls and cooks to some of whom weges of & month or more are due. ; It was sn amusing sight to zee the hungry patrons of the place beeieging the doors at noon t'mo, on the scent for “grub.” They, of couree, were dlsappolnted, one and all, as Corstable Snowden will cook 1o maals for the precent. The air in the neighborhood wes bedarkened with little black oaths which wera flying about pro- miscuously, hurled hither and thither by the disgusted dupes, The place wil probably be transferred temporarily t1 Allen Bros,, sud the austionable prop erty will be sold, Resolutions of Respect. Tre Advantageof Settling in the New Towa The title “South Omaha” doesnot mean the southern part of the caty of Omaha.but is the name of the thrivine town commencine at the Union Stock yards on the south, and extend ing for a mile and a_ half north, nearly connecting with thecity limits of Omaha. The compavy have again concluded to put on salo 1,000 lots, and let the purchasors of the rame realizo the profit which the enbaucad value of these lots is suro to mako. It now being an assured fact that South Omaha is destined —in the near futuce —to be the largest live stock market west of Chicago, thero can ba no doubt that thie proparty ia & few years will be worth five or even ton times the amount that it can be bought for to-day. Some may ask: If this is s, why dc not the company keep it and realiza this profit The answer ie, thut in order to make lots valuable, there must be improvoments on or sur rounding them, and as is the caso in all new towns, special inducements must be offered at first to et the paople to take hold and build, There aro probahly more such inducements offs-ed by South Omaha than wars ever put forth by any new town. The large business done by the stock yards company and the im- mense slaughter and packing houses together with their auxilaries are no small foatura i the spgregate of events that are destined to make South Omahs a largs placs. Again, the town is not sn addition to Omaha, and is not liable for city taxes, althoagn it an{«)yu all tae banafity from the growth of Omaha that it would if it wero just INSIOE th city limits, but bsing just OUTSIDE, only county taxas ars collacted, which ara mecoly nomizal, Tae town owus und operates it own water works, which faraish an abund wnt sup@ly of pure spring water, Dam- my trains will ron on the B, & M. and U, P. ralways évery Lnur, Sstopping ot tha north end of the town site as well as ot tho stock yards, “The Thirtsenth stheot horss cars will run to Hascall's park this spring, and to the stock yards at no distant day. The high altitude makes the location a healthy one. OF course there are those who do not baliava tht South Omahy will amoun® t» much. This kind of peopie didn’c balisve Chicago would ever ba anythug bitter than a cranberry bog, that Omiaha would ever outgrow hee villaga clothes, that there naver could byaay frait raised in Nebraska, cte., ete.
